Hopefully someone will be able to answer my question here because I already asked on the gamefaqs Skyrim forum, and got no good help at all (why am I not surprised).

I have several character files, and in a few of these files, have decided to marry Onmund. Originally when I first married him, he would have no problem attacking enemies with his destruction magic. Eventually, however, he gets to a point where he will not attack at all, even when enemies stand 5 feet away from him or even if he is attacked. He will hold his hands together as if he is holding a weapon or guarding, yet he has no weapons in his arsenal. Even when he has his bow out he won't attack with it, even if I give him arrows.

In general, he doesn't respond to when enemies are near or even when he is being attacked. I'm not sure if this is a common problem among spouses that follow you wherever you go or if it's just specific to Onmund. In other files I've had Marcurio and some other dude (I can't remember his name, but he wields a two-handed great sword) and I haven't had problems with them not attacking. I'm wondering if there is a way to fix this, him not attacking? I'm also thinking it could be a bug of some sort but I don't know.

I know there is no official way to divorce in Skyrim other than for me to murder my husband. I have heard that murdering a spouse means that you can't remarry though?

I am having this same problem. I joined just to tell you this, it is so incredibly frustrating. I dismissed Onmund, picked up Erandur...he glitched as well. Would always walk with his weapon in "block" position. The only difference is that Erandur is, so far, still attacking. However, he moves very slowly and will refuse to hold his weapon like a normal person in combat. Onmund refuses to attack at all. Both of these things happened in "busy" battles, where the two characters were accosted by multiple enemies and were getting hit quite a bit, notable also that I was gaining experience and leveling up. I've seen people blame this glitch on the leveling cap, which fixes followers to the level that you were when you met them, but you'd think even followers unsuited to fighting higher level enemies would at least make an attempt, or cease blocking when enemies aren't around. I have reset to before the glitches activated, and indeed they will activate once again after using the character for a long amount of time. I was hoping for a patch fix for this one, but the problem seems oddly-isolated. I posted about it in a couple of other places but am getting very few answers other than the leveling theory. I am going to attempt to re-create the glitch in another playthrough, and test whether maybe Onmund himself is a glitched character who caused Erandur to "inherit" the glitch, or whether this just tends to happen to glitchier NPCs.

Actually, I tried to replicate the glitch, and had some success. I was fighting some enemies in a dungeon and I found a battle that seemed to trigger this glitch. It seems to have something to do with summoning atronachs. 3/3 times I used an atronach in this battle, I experienced the glitch. 2/2 I did not use them, I fought to the end of the battle and the follower did not glitch during or after the battle. Some friend suggested that the AI gets confused when atronachs or spells cause splash damage to your follower in battle. It interprets the hostile threat of your enemy as something to attack, but splash damage from you atronachs confuses it, since it refuses to attack the atronach or you but "your" atronach is causing damage to it with AoE. The AI then responds to this by combining "friend" and "foe" responses: aka, they treat you in every respect like a follower, but block instead of fight when you're around. It's easiest to trigger the glitch when the follower is kneeling and continues to be hit by atronach splash damage or enemy attacks during this point, but not enough for him/her to die. It seems to occur mostly with mage-type characters.

Well, I had a chick(from whiterun....can't think of her name)she was the exact opposite. She would always attack but would obey my commands most of the time. Her attacking got so fierce I would have to leave her in certain areas becuase it was taking me longer to rank up. Eventually she stopped obeying my command to stay and somehow got lost while I was on my way to a ruin mission.

She was kinda hot and I liked how she kept calling me her Thade, I was gonna buy a house in whiterun and figure out how I could marry her!! lol

Sounds like a bug. Probably cause the FPS issue on PS3 is causing other elements of the game to whack out.

I know this thread hasn't been responded to in a few months but I thought I'd add my experience. I've had the exact same problem with Onmund and I found that if you go through a door that leads to another area of the cave that needs to load he will reset and attack again. This will only work if it's a different area and the area has to load, if you go through a regular door and the game doesn't have to show the load screen it won't reset him. Has anyone else noticed that while he's standing like he's holding his weapon but isn't, that he will levitate rather than walk while following you? It's kind of creepy. I've also found that the glitch is caused by me selecting a bow with the quick button (left or right on ps3). Maybe it's because he doesn't have a bow, but if I do that he won't use magic, attack, or do much of anything even if I switch back to melee. To fix this I've resorted to using ranged magic (fire ball etc) but I'm sure this wrecks any sneak attack that I get with a bow. I'll probably just ditch him because being a 1 man army has made some battles very difficult and he's essentially just a pack mule anymore.

Amazing that random forum users seem to do more QA and testing than Bethesda themselves.

I started having this problem myself over past week or so. From my experience it seems only to happen with mage followers I used J'Zargo, Braylyn(that dark elf mage at the college), and that mage you get from the black star quest all stopped attacking eventually and walked around looking like they were holding a bow. I am running a pure mage build and I think the problem occurs when I am switching between spells in battle they always sheath their weapons whenever I switch then they get "stuck". I found trying to command them to sit in a chair stops the glitch for a time. I'm currently using jenessa a mainly melee/archer followr and haven't had an issue yet. Hope this helps a little i made a profile just to comment on this thread.

ok i just gotta know.. what benifits does marrying someone have in skyrim? i've heard they will fight for u but is that it? cause the AI co-op is pretty fvckin stupid on this game and basically just get in the way... i have never done it and have no plans to but with all the conversation about it i was just wondering if it helps your character in any way.

I'm mostly just attacking with my bow now, which is a great idea so far, but I plan on not having any allies join me as of now. The reason is to being is because I accidentally hit them and they die, so far I lost Benor and Lydia and I'm not gonna lose another one so I'm flying solo as of now.

I've also been having this problem just recently (PC version) with Brelyna Marion. I have been playing for a couple hundred hours or so and had *never* had a problem like this until very recently, and it is annoying as hell let me tell you. In my case it seems that the follower action AI just completely "shuts off", and she will follow me around in a sort of combat pose with her hands raised as though she wants to cast spells, but will no do anything. Enemies will wail at her and she will stand there like a tool and do nothing until they kill her. ...and it seems to be permanent. Once I kill off the enemies, she will *still* have the same retarded "combat pose" while she follows me around; all her other AI functions still seem to work (speech, follow, execute commands etc) but combat is basically broken forever and I have to revert to a previous save in order to get her working again. Very frustrating having to constantly make backup saves literally before every fight. It's killing the game and I really don''t want to have to dismiss my follower, since it's become an integral part of my character's "story" (I'm semi-RPing on this character, and as a team these 2 are basically inseparable). Has anyone found a fix?
