As far back as Febuary, there have been rumors about the Fall 2008 release of a Slim version of the PS3. Is ther any official news on this yet?

The PS2 and PSP got the same treatment, so its not totally unbelievable that this will happen eventually.

Nope.
The PSP's slim version is so marginal it's hardly worth mentioning.

Of course it will happen eventially but not....however long into the PS3's life we are, it would have to be at least 5 years before one is announced.

I don't understand why so many people are asking about ps3 slim... I mean... I wouldn't want one. Everyone I know that got a ps2 slim when they first came out had problems with them overheating after a few hours of play, whereas my old fat ps2 never had any problems. Now again, my ps3 has no problems, but it seems likely that a slimmer one would have heat issues. Circuits and chips need breathing room. Why would you want one with less air flow?

i also dont understand why people would need a slim ps3. the big one looks extremly good. big and powerful... slim ps3.. not so much...

I will just stay with my 60 gig fat PS3, besides a slim PS3 is going to be hard to develope for some time and even then the power supply would have to somewhere outside the console.

theres def no official news about a slim PS3, and i dont see one comming untill they use 45nm Cell CPUs, and a smaller GPU to reduce heat so that they can use a smaller heat sink and still fit everything in, cuz with the size of the heatsink in the 80gb its impossible to make it slimmer. Also the PSU will probably have to be external, and its either going to have to be a flip top or a laptop slim Blu-ray drive (hopefully still slot loading.) So maby be next year, but prob not till 2010 or 2011

Wait till FFXIII comes out in Australia (prob. around christmas 2010 or mid 2011).

PS3 needs to move from 65nm CELL -> 45nm CELL and 90nm RSX -> 45nm RSX + smaller fan(4th gen fan?) before SONY can consider moving to a PS3 Slim...

As for why people believe it'll happen.

PS1 -> PSone
PS2 -> PS2 Slim
PSP -> PSP 2000/ PSP Slim
therefore its only logical it'll happen to PS3 soon.

So many threads about these PS3 slims...brutal. Does it honestly matter though? If the PS3s after Dec wont have bc, why care? Also like everyone else mentioned...it will over heat like a mofo, i mean the PS2 slim overheated like nuts so imagine the god damn PS3...I really dont think its even possible right now.

I don't see why somebody that already has a PS3 would even be interested in getting a slimmer version. I doubt the slimmer version would be as pretty :lol:

i dont know y anyone would bother

the ps3 looks so bad a$$ right... y would it need to be slimer.... i like it now because wen ppl come into my home they see it immedietly... it comands attention...

i dont get y something tht is not suposed to be portable needs to be slimed lol...

No. Just no.

The cell processor is to darn big to fit into such a small package. Of course, it doesn't have to be THAT big, but the word "slim" implies that it's rather small.

And there's no reason to buy ANOTHER PS3 just to get a smaller one. Just too much money for no real reason.
