Slim vs Super-Slim

My phat 80 gig PS3 bricked last month and the repair shop said its irreprable, it also broke 15 days after the 3 year warranty ran out. So forgetting my bad luck i'm going for a new PS3.

Now what I want to know is if I should go for the tried and tested Slim or the new Super Slim. I am afraid the new Super Slim one might have reliability issues with its CD loader and generally being super tiny (heat issues). I would really like to hear opinions from Super-Slim and Slim users.

I have had no issues at al with my 320 GB slim I bought after my ol' 20 GB died on me last year (RIP phatty). I really don't see any issues with the top load method on the extra slim due to less moving parts to break down. Go with whichever looks best to you and what can be afforded.

I've had both and I dig the Super-Slim. It's tiny and cute:oops: .

Well seriously though, I've got the same performance from both and the SS doesn't run hot, just a warm around the back of it.

I'd grab a Slim before they disappear from the stores. Those sliding disc covers on the super slims just look destined to jam up.

I've never in my life had a cd/dvd/bd-rom drive that slides jam up on me. It's just a cover that slides anyways so there is even less mechanical parts moving to get jammed up.

The Super Slim has no auto disc feeder. I would go with the Slim 160gb that has the auto disc feeder.

I've heard very little about the auto disc loader and if it messes up it's incredibly easy to fix if you're not skidish about opening up your ps3. The exposed blu ray drive and lens personally frightens me. HybridPhoenix

it won't read anythingi don't even think the disc is spinning

The Super Slim is your best choice. It's the cheapest model and with current technology behind it. I wouldn't worry about heat issue as long as you have it placed in reasonable environment.

After that, purchase 320GB HDD for 40$ and you're good to go.

I haven't seen any Super Slims in NA region and I live in Toronto. I don't believe Super Slim PS3 is available in North America but only in Europe at the moment.

Also, 160GB PS3 are discontinued for quite some time now, if he can find one, sure but the price is still too steep compare to Super Slim.

I think the only issue with super slim is the exposed laser lens. Other than that it's good engineering design considering how cool it runs and weight it has shed since original model that launched in 2006.

Exposed lens is not really a problem. You can clean the lens with swabbing alcohol and microfibre cloth. SS seems to run a little cooler due to less wattage (75/190 Watt) compared to latest Slim (80/210 Watt). Both Slim (latest version) and SS have 45 nm Cell and 40 nm RSX. My dying power hog fat PS3 has 65 nm for both chip and uses (140/280 Watt).

My only concern is how sturdy is the disc cover's latch. Is it made of hard plastic? Not sure about ventilation. The top loading disc part seems help to expel a bit of heat produced by the system.

Super slim looks gay it also looks like you can cook a BBQ on it, the video clip of it being revealed on this site made me wonder why Sony even bothered wasting money on a plastic object that doesn't look like it would last a month. If i dropped my slim out the window, it would survive, if i dropped the super slim out the window, it would break apart right before its brains splatter all over the floor, i rest my case...Mickeyminime

My current 80GB Phat PS3 almost makes as much sound as a vacuum cleaner (this is not a joke, it really does), so maybe i'll be getting a super slim.

Is the system also a bit faster? (Well, for the 12GB flash version). I can use the HDD of the old PS3 and put it in the Super Slim.

I picked up the Super-Slim 500gb system today with AC 3 game included, it's a very awesome looking system.;)

i had all 3 models, the slim is better than the super slim because the tray holding the games on the super slim is very hollow and skinny, and you hear the game lens spinning like crazy on it.  the regular slim is better, less noisy.  the fat was my fav but it died.

I recently bought the super slim when my 80 bib got the YLOD about a month or so ago. I debated on this same question. I did not want to pay more for the slim and everywhere I looked it was more, I ended up getting the super slim 250 gig Uncharted 3 GOTY edition for $270 . I have not had any problems with the super slim it doesnt run hot at all.jcopp72

I was looking at the same system but I went with the 2012 Black Friday special 250gb Super slim with Uncharted 1, Uncharted 2, Infamous 1 and Infamous 2.  $270.
