My phat 80 gig PS3 bricked last month and the repair shop said its irreprable, it also broke 15 days after the 3 year warranty ran out. So forgetting my bad luck i'm going for a new PS3.

Now what I want to know is if I should go for the tried and tested Slim or the new Super Slim. I am afraid the new Super Slim one might have reliability issues with its CD loader and generally being super tiny (heat issues). I would really like to hear opinions from Super-Slim and Slim users.

I have had no issues at al with my 320 GB slim I bought after my ol' 20 GB died on me last year (RIP phatty). I really don't see any issues with the top load method on the extra slim due to less moving parts to break down. Go with whichever looks best to you and what can be afforded.

I was referring more to the fact that the blu-ray laser is exposed, and as far as I know they are very sensitive compared to CD lasers. Any opinions on that? Also heat wise, it is a bit more confined so could heat dispersion be an issue on the Super-Slim?

I've had both and I dig the Super-Slim. It's tiny and cute:oops: .

Well seriously though, I've got the same performance from both and the SS doesn't run hot, just a warm around the back of it.

Cool, that's what I wanted to know. I was affraid because I watched a video of some french guy taking it apart and it looked like it had no way for hot air to get out effectively.

Super slim looks gay it also looks like you can cook a BBQ on it, the video clip of it being revealed on this site made me wonder why Sony even bothered wasting money on a plastic object that doesn't look like it would last a month. If i dropped my slim out the window, it would survive, if i dropped the super slim out the window, it would break apart right before its brains splatter all over the floor, i rest my case...

^^ Yeah, becuase the benchmark for anything is the "drop it out of a window test"... The super slim is nice, the blu-ray drive is a little louder since it's not as covered as the slim, but it feels like it runs alot cooler to me. Also, you can't argue with the size of it. It's unbeleivable how small it is compared to the fat and even the slim. If you have a lack of space or want more space for your system to breath, the super slim gives you both if your putting it in the same spot as your old fat PS3.

I'd grab a Slim before they disappear from the stores. Those sliding disc covers on the super slims just look destined to jam up.

I've never in my life had a cd/dvd/bd-rom drive that slides jam up on me. It's just a cover that slides anyways so there is even less mechanical parts moving to get jammed up.

Most review sites seem to recommend just going with the slim over the super slim.

I still think the old PS3 looks lovely, but the Slim is just as nice, the only good thing about the slim is that its quiet, doesn't really get as many scratches, finger prints on it unlike its daddy and i hear its a lot cooler inside the slim as well. My brother wants a PS3 and when he saw the Super slim, he was put off by its looks and design. I was going to give him my fat PS3, but the blu-ray drive played up and will only play normal discs so he was out of luck.

The Super Slim has no auto disc feeder. I would go with the Slim 160gb that has the auto disc feeder.

I've heard very little about the auto disc loader and if it messes up it's incredibly easy to fix if you're not skidish about opening up your ps3. The exposed blu ray drive and lens personally frightens me.

atleast I'm guessing its the auto disc loader. all I know is as the disc is being inserted it makes noise and the noise will go on for about 2-3 stop and the disc isn't being read. I've been reduced to digital gaming only. and whats this about exposing the blu ray lens

Hmm, well that's unfortunate. Doesn't sound like the loader though, sounds like the reader. Will it play DVDs? If so, it's the blu ray reader. If not, you probably just need to reset the disc drive. On the super slims, I mean. The blu ray lens is exposed every time you open it.

But what are you doing when you open it other then taking out a game and putting in another. It's not like your sneezing into it or shaving your beard off over it while its open. Like anything, if your careful with it, I'm sure it will be fine. I myself never owned a slim. I had a fat one which died a few months ago and then I bought a super slim. I don't regret it one bit. The size alone is unbeleivable compared to the slim. As for the disc loading door, as cheap and tacky as it looks, it's actually a pretty solid piece of plastic. When you open it with the button, it slides nicely and uniformly. As long as your not changing discs every 5 minutes, I see no reason to beleive its going to break any time soon. But thats just me.

I would really like to hear opinions from Super-Slim and Slim users.

chaplainDMK

The Super Slim is your best choice. It's the cheapest model and with current technology behind it. I wouldn't worry about heat issue as long as you have it placed in reasonable environment.

After that, purchase 320GB HDD for 40$ and you're good to go.

160GB Slim retails for $250 in North America. Super Slim is around $260-$300.

I haven't seen any Super Slims in NA region and I live in Toronto. I don't believe Super Slim PS3 is available in North America but only in Europe at the moment.

Also, 160GB PS3 are discontinued for quite some time now, if he can find one, sure but the price is still too steep compare to Super Slim.

They are...they have them in New Brunswick, CA so there's no way they don't have them in Ontario. They have it bundled with Uncharted 3 GOTY

I live in Toronto and got one. But from what I understood, most stores only got a few of them and they sold pretty quickly. So either call around or wait until your local one gets new stock.

I think the only issue with super slim is the exposed laser lens. Other than that it's good engineering design considering how cool it runs and weight it has shed since original model that launched in 2006.

Exposed lens is not really a problem. You can clean the lens with swabbing alcohol and microfibre cloth. SS seems to run a little cooler due to less wattage (75/190 Watt) compared to latest Slim (80/210 Watt). Both Slim (latest version) and SS have 45 nm Cell and 40 nm RSX. My dying power hog fat PS3 has 65 nm for both chip and uses (140/280 Watt).

My only concern is how sturdy is the disc cover's latch. Is it made of hard plastic? Not sure about ventilation. The top loading disc part seems help to expel a bit of heat produced by the system.

Do you really think they'd mass-produce such a popular product knowing the Blu-Ray laser is less functional? Stupid.

It's not a matter of the laser being less functional, just exposed. Which wouldn't be an issue to anyone who can take care of things properly. My issue is that because it's more exposed, the drive is a lot louder.

Trust me, if you have a fat PS3 and you know what that fan sounds like, the sound of a super slim's drive is whisper quiet comparatively speaking...

Still, lately I've been using Netflix a lot on the PS3 Slim and I can't help but notice how noisy it gets, without anything actually running on it except the internet streaming from the app. I bet the new one is less noisy without running a game or spinning a disc in it.

My current 80GB Phat PS3 almost makes as much sound as a vacuum cleaner (this is not a joke, it really does), so maybe i'll be getting a super slim.

Is the system also a bit faster? (Well, for the 12GB flash version). I can use the HDD of the old PS3 and put it in the Super Slim.

My original 60gb monolith just died on me and am too trying to solve the slim/super slim problem. However many reviewers are pointin to the original slim as being built better. In response to your comment I think you can clearly see that sony have built the super slim far cheaper than the cost of the more robust slim, so that when the ps4 comes around this can still make a profit when theyneed to drop the price severly.

i had all 3 models, the slim is better than the super slim because the tray holding the games on the super slim is very hollow and skinny, and you hear the game lens spinning like crazy on it.  the regular slim is better, less noisy.  the fat was my fav but it died.

I recently bought the super slim when my 80 bib got the YLOD about a month or so ago. I debated on this same question. I did not want to pay more for the slim and everywhere I looked it was more, I ended up getting the super slim 250 gig Uncharted 3 GOTY edition for $270 . I have not had any problems with the super slim it doesnt run hot at all.

I was looking at the same system but I went with the 2012 Black Friday special 250gb Super slim with Uncharted 1, Uncharted 2, Infamous 1 and Infamous 2.  $270.
