How hard is it exactly? I'm looking to expand my horizons into the RPG genre but I read everywhere that it is brutally frustrating. What's your experience been? And is it like a real time action RPG or is it similar to Dragon Age: Origins?

It is unforgiving to mistakes, but not cheap. What I mean is if you make a mistake (oh my health is only 2/3 I don't need to heal) you will die. It is not cheap in the sense that it sends waves of hard to kill enemies that cheap shot you.

If you are an adaptive player ( blank boss is weak against arrows/magic, so I should use arrows/magic instead of hacking and slashing like GOW) you should be fine. Also willingness to level grind for souls will help in difficulty.

Also the ability to learn about enemies from battles (blank is vulnerable if I block his main attack then attack).

In short it is not too hard if you are smart and listen to advice.

It's not as hard as everyone says it is.

I find it fine. Don't rush everything and take your time. Think things over when fighting boss's.

I think that the first level is kinda hard. Only because your learning the controls and how the game feels. The game can get frustrating if you die. Most of the time if you die it's your fault. You made the wrong decision. If your scared of getting invade play offline there is no difference.

Everyone should give it a try.

To answer your question about play type it is full real time.

R1 = weak/quick attack right hand weapon

R2=heavy attack right hand weapon

L1= block with shield (or if you have a second weapon repeat of R1)

L2 = push back with shield (or repeat of R2 if you have other weapon)

Triangle= wield main (right hand) with 2 hands.

It sound odd using R1/2 and L1/2 for melee, but trust me it works out beautifully. Peanut butter has met jelly.

It's Unforgiving, but not frustrating. It has a pretty steep learning curve but after that the game isn't very hard. The game is an Action RPG, nothing like Dragon Age.

It's a very fun game, yeah, it's not easy and can put up quite a challenge, but it's very rewarding and the more and farther you get into the game, the more the game surpries you and the more you want to see.

There really is no other game like it. The art is exceptional, it never lets up and you want to keep playing and keep playing.

When people say it is difficult, many things, one of the most common things is the player can't just run into a swarm of bad guys and slash them all, because the stamina bar would run out and the player would probably die. You have to take your time fighting, sometimes you have to fight one enemy at a time if there is a group of five.

What also makes it very difficult, and this is the kicker, is that the experience points are the Demon's Souls, you use them to buy anything and everything, from levelling up to items, weapons, learning spells, etc, and what makes it hard is that if you die, the amount of souls you have that you haven't spent becomes a blood stain on the spot you died, so you go back to zero and you have one chance to reach that blood stain without dying to get those souls back, but if you die again on the way there, that blood stain is gone and thus the souls with it. That's what creates a lot of tension in the game. And sometimes you need to save up a lot of your souls to buy something expensive, but you also run the risk of dying and losing them. Almost everything in the game you can do has an equivalent advantage and drawback. That's what makes it so exciting, is that there are any number of ways the player can play the game.

Short answer, get the game, it is honestly one of the best games ever made, there is a reason Gamespot gave it GOTY and I'm sure you won't be able to even compare the game to any other one, Demon's Souls is extremely unique, and extremely good.

I also made a thread giving a brief synopsis of the different classes if you want to check that out to get a better idea, because the devs didn't explain well enough what the different classes entail and exactly mean.

Don't listen to the people saying it's not cheap, because it can be very cheap at times. Personally I think it tests my patience more than it tests my skill at playing the game. Since every time you die you have to restart the entire level it can be very very tedious sometimes.

The thing is, you died, ok, next time you won't fall for the same error, this is what DS players find about the amazing difficulty, its only hard if you act stupid.

The first playthrough isn't nearly as hard as people make it out to be. Like others have said, take your time, play defensively and counter enemies instead of just running in swinging. New game+ and beyond is where you'll see the infamous DS difficulty, but by that point you should have decent strategies for all the worlds and it just becomes a matter of executing.

i disagree, the game is perfect in its mechanics. Its completely fair, if you die is cause you failed. Simply as that.

Lol, it is very hard... but I've found it more challenging than frustrating. It's like the old NES days when games were hard but you loved playing them to get past the challenge. With that said... I don't know if I'd recommend it to someone as their FIRST RPG, lol. To me, it's an rpg that was made for gamers that love rpg's.

As for the style, it's an action rpg... more like a 3rd person Oblivion than Dragon Age. And conversely, DA is an easier title to recommend to someone that is new to rpg's. Demon's Souls is the better game though imo... no level cap... just keep becoming more & more of a bad @ss.

That is very true... I've normally only died on my first playthrough of a level... and even then, not on every one. The game is challenging, but after a while, you learn how to play it. You play carelessly... you die.

You die in every game because you fail. That's a given. Restarting a level because of a cheap death is not fun. It's not a perfect mechanic. Some people might not mind it, but I think it's stupid and takes away from the fun I could be having.

i agree its a cheap easy way to lengthen the game. the game is as innovative as Uncharted 2 which is too say nothing new really. people do exaggerate its not the best nor most innovative game of the year and it certainly not as hard as they say. also its really repetitive and barely an rpg, the leveling system is so bare bones its ridiculous. its not a bad game its not an impossible game, its a decent game. however if you don't have a lot of patiences and don't like trial and error type games then you should skip it.

So I guess my big question is is if you were to compare the difficulty level to that of say Call of Duty: World At War Veteran Mode how would this rate? Is this cheap like that is or does it actually require skill and tact? And as for the dying and starting over how much progress would you lose on average?

It's kind of sad people saying the game isn't difficult when it obviously is. I don't know if those people just played as Royal, or if they are exagerating the difficulty saying that it's not that hard, but that's false, it is a hard game. It seems I can't get anywhere without having to grind. I have two bosses waiting for me, the second boss in the mine (red fire boss guy, smaller and light on his feet) and in the Shrine of Storms that fat boss with the giant tail/tongue, but both are difficult to fight, and for me to beat them I would have to grind and grind and I don't see that as justification for getting past them.

Listen well, i have the game, i have completed 10 times already. The game is NOT cheap, don't listen no anyone telling you otherwise. Neither its a TRIAL and ERROR game, once you learned how to play, you can get thought the whole game without dying. Its about taking time learning enemies patterns, its about strategy, you need to plan your attacks before going into action... you can't expect to go button mashing 5 or 6 enemies at one time, its not God of War. COD5 Veteran its what i call CHEAP difficulty, DS is completely the opposite. Its difficult because it requires skills and tactics. About dying and losing progress, all levels have shortcuts that you can activate, with this you can skip most enemies spawn and go almost directly to the boss, but remember these shortcuts are not always accessible from the start, you probably need to activate some lever or do some puzzle to actually using it. In the end if you died you lose souls, but you learn that souls can come and go pretty easily doing coop or grinding in specific parts.

It's not hard or frustrating, it just requires patience and intelligence. You have to learn how to defeat each enemy by trial and error, and take your time killing enemys, instead of hacking and slashing. Then you keep going in the level and if you die, then you will now know how to defeat that enemy which defeated you - the whole level before is EASY now because you know the way and blast through it. If you still find it difficult, it's not the game for you and should buy a Wii - the game really isn't hard, it's just dying is a game mechanic which is well used, Dying makes your health lower, but this makes you more cautious, and also stronger, so it evens out - it also makes sure invaders have a 'slight' disadvantage and enables you to play co-op if you want. Everytime you die, it's not like Uncharted 2, Modern Warfare or any other game this year, but instead, what goes through your head is this: "my fault, I shouldn't of rushed in. That enemy used fire against me, so I'll use the ring of fire protection and the shield of fire resistance. After that, I saw lot's of blood stains so I will use my best weapon and shield and move through slowly. But first, I'll blast through the start because now it's super easy and I know where all the enemys are". And then you'll o that 3 or 4 times and then reach the end, or less tries, or more tries, and then you reach a boss. This normally enables a shortcut to get there so you only have to play 5-10 mins before trying the boss again but most of the time you can sprint there pretty quickly. The Demon's Souls wiki is very useful and helps with items, maps, NPC's, bosses and loads more - anything you need. It's not really cheating because it's just info - the game doesn't do great in telling you what you're meant to be doing but levels are half linear and half... sandbox, sort of. There's one path which is obvious and is normally the quickest route to the boss, or the easiest, and then there's other parts of the map for exploring, discovering, mini-bosses, items etc. It's definitely a 10/10 game, but if it's to your liking?... well, then you'll have to find out because only you can say for sure.

Button mashers should stay away from DS. This game is not for you. Get Dante, Bayonetta or GOW 3. Glad the person i quote has a good taste for games, hopefully next year wont be as bad with all the mashers that are coming out. I am totally against button mashers, kinda worried about what will happen on next year.
