For some reason this morning my PS3 has stoped playing region 1 dvds. Just last night I was watching Superman the Animated Series Volume 3 (which only appears to be available on region 1 dvd), but this morning when i tried to watch the rest of it, a message popped up saying that the disk was the wrong region. And now none of my region 1 dvds work!!!

Does anyone know why this has happened, and how I can fix it? I tried resetting the system, but that hasnt done anything (apart from stopping it from connecting to the internet... but thats not important right now).

There is a DVD region selector in settings but I have never used it. It's in the security settings. Good luck.

Unfortunately I have tried using that, but it seems to only be related to Parental Controls, as opposed to changing what region dvds I want to watch. But thanks for the suggestion.

Im going to try restoring the system to it's factory settings, and reformatting the hard drive. Sure Im going to lose my save files, and it probably wont work either, but its the only option ive got left t try.

Its a shame I didnt see that sooner.... But i guess Ive got an excuse now to replay my games again! Hooray!

On a slightly more s*it note, my PS3 still wont play region 1 dvds, even tho it was doing it last night. I am at a loss as to how it happened.

Have you put any new updates on recently?

I don't get that either, I thought that the PS3 was supposed to be multi region?

Hey, thanks for atleast trying!

Another thought occurs to me, the only other thing that I did on Sunday on the PS3 was play God Of War after I watched those dvds. I hadnt played any PS2 games on the PS3 before that. Playing region locked PS2 games wouldnt turn the region free dvd playing off would it?

I dont see why it would. A PS2 game is basically just the same as a dvd disc so it shouldn't make any difference.

Yeah, I didnt think that was likely, but those are the only things that I have done with the PS3. I just have no idea why it happened!

So I phoned Sony's helpline today, and after a quick discussion with the person on the other end, she conferred with the "PS3 Specialist" who informed me that the playstation 3 is not even supposed to play region 1 dvds, and that I must have bought a faulty PS3, and it has corrected itself somehow. Basicly there is no way for a european PS3 to play region 1 dvds at this point in time, and there is nothing they can do to help me.

Balls.

Until you posted your last post I was going to ask did you have a PAL PS3 and if so it shouldn't have played R1 DVD's in the first place. Only the games are region free not DVD's but I guess you know that now. I suppose you just got lucky or unlucky as it stands now.

What I am curious about though is, did you really lose all your saves when you restored the default settings? If so you might have to make another call to Sony because THAT IS NOT SUPPOSED TO HAPPEN. I had to restore the default settings on my PS3 and the only thing I lost was my audio and video settings. And at the time when I was told to do this I was told that would be all I'd lose.

Nahh, I didnt lose the save files when I reset the console to its default settings. But when I reformatted the drive, everything was lost. But it doesnt matter. Id only finished Resistance, Heavenly Sword, and Uncharted. I redownloaded my PSN games last night fairly hassle free (tekken took 3 hours tho...). Its a shame I didnt see the message about copying my save files etc onto a thumb drive tho. But still, atleast it gives me an excuse to play through those games again.
