Well, sony is a big company of course they can keep the servers for free. They make money of software ect....so paying online service would be extra money, if they make the online experience a little better and charge the $50 like xbox does and most of would still pay to play.

I guess sony is not that greddy. Think $50 x 1mil.

But reffering to your question, i wonder how much does servers cost.

I really doubt all that money going through xbox live subscriptions goes to keeping the servers up. They probably make massive amounts of profit from it. It's cheap as chips to these companies.

The servers are out sourced to a third party called Demonware and sony just rent it off them. i guess they must have to pay an anual fee to them but the revenue is probably generated by royalties from products sold on PS store etc

Perhaps you could E-mail Sony that question, they'll happily reply.

Sony just runs the PSN, game servers are run by devs or publishers. PSN creates huge profit because everyone who offers stuff there pays for traffic, that's why you have so many keys as DLC on the PSN (Updates are made via servers from publisher / devs)

Running a server isn't too expensive. The key word is "running", thats most of the hard work, keeping them up as much as possible.

PSN is probably cheaper to maintain than XBL, and they have PS + to help with PSN.

So does Microsoft....

no xbl has its own p2p network all of the responsibility for servers and network traffic falls on MS for online multiplayer with the exception of a few games. sony only maintains the psn. MP for each and every game, with a few exceptions, is the responsibility of the devs not sony themselves hence the dedicated servers where there is no host and virtually no lag and players on the psn often brag of the no lag issue because of it. p2p means someone in the lobbys is hosting and thus gameplay for the MP portion depends on how well the hosts connection is.
