And I want to know if I can upgrade the current Hard drive for an 320gb HDD I have lying around, in your experience..

Can I upgrade it with an normal external HDD or does it have to be the laptop ones?

so id suggest opening up yours and finding out what hard drive it is. i just got a slim model myself.

They really should release the 12GB model in the US. If Microsoft can get away with selling 4GB 360's, you think a cheaper PS3 would do just as well.

you have to check if the HDD is formatted as FAT32 or the PS3 won't detect it

I just ordered a 1TB to replace my 60GB HDD in my system. Just make sure to use a drive that's a 2.5 SATA and keep the drive speed at 5400. The brand name really doesn't make a big difference as long as it's formatted at FAT 32 and is a 2.5 laptop drive.

bear in mind the 12gb model really needs a separate caddy in addition to any increased hard drive, and sony wouldn't indirectly encourage you to void your warranty via an official add on

and check the dimension requirements for the drive as one of the dimensions has changed from recollection, although there's no need to format in advance to FAT32 as the PS3 does this automatically ;-)

Changing hard-drive doesnt void your warranty. From Sony Website:

Q: Does replacing your PS3 void your warranty?
A: Simple answer is NO. But if you try to modify or take it apart it then this could void your warranty

Q: Will I need to keep the old internal Hard Drive?
A: Yes you will need to keep the old one in case you have to send in your PS3 for Service and you will need to put the 60GB back into the PS3

Maybe but they would have to prove that it was you who did it and that it wasn't like that from the factory which they would never be able to do.

What the store thinks doesn't matter, when you use your MFG warranty, you send it to Sony, not Wal-Mart, etc..

The PS3 is designed for upgraded HDDs. It's a feature. They can't void your warrant for making use of a feature.

bearing in mind the official warranty position has already been posted where are you getting your information from, and why do you think it's possible to change the hard drive without removing the warranty sticker, and why would sony sell an official caddy which negates your warranty?????

Nope, Sony openly stated and allowed that you can change the HDD without voiding the warranty

The memory on the new 12gb superslim, if you didnt know, is flash memory and is not a harddrive. You will need to buy a caddy to hold any harddrive you buy in order to insert one into the ps3. This is explained in one of the leaflets that come with the ps3, so if you have them still have a look through. If not, im sure a quick search on the playstation website will have the information you need. Im not entirely sure on the warranty situation.

official drives and caddies are sold at my shop here in Australia, most customers still choose the 500gb model though ;)

I'm not concerned about the warranty myself because mine has outlived it's warranty by a long time. Besides I found a 1TB HDD for less than $80.00 including shipping.

it really depends on what model you have, and how far into the warranty time you are. if you want to be safe, you may just have to deal with the small hdd size, but, replacing a hdd on a ps3 is really easy, and you shouldn't worry about it breaking, if it does, most of the time, it is easier and less stresful to just buy a new ps3.

An external HDD has to be formatted as FAT 32 to work on PS3. Internal ones must be SATA 5400 RPM 2.5 inch laptop HDDs of any brand. You can get a 500Gb internal one online for $50. When you install a new HDD you have to go to www.us.playstation.com and find the latest update and put it on a flashdrive or DVD and then put it in your PS3 after you install the new HDD, because the PS3 requires the latest update in order to make the HDD work in it.

Just go to www.google.com and search "installing a PS3 compatible HDD" in whatever type of PS3 you have beit Super Slim or Slim.
