You'll have to send it to sony. I would make it clear you want the same model back. Hopefully they would understand why and make sure you do get it back.

Don't send it back. Find a local repair shop, or fix it yourself.

Take your 40 GB hard drive out of your gunmetal PS3 and put it in the 60 GB system and see if it was just a hard drive error.

Its very simple to do. Can find the instructions by googling, but it really dont require them, its very easy.

Back up the 40 gig first.

When you put the drive in a different PS3 it will format the drive.

Local Shops can fix them. High chance that the one he gets back from Sony will be a non 60gb model.

I've seen a couple of these posts for a while....and have a question.

Does this only happen for the 60GB model? All the previous reports of PS3 failure seems to be 60GB.

Um, no. You're completely wrong and full of crap. There are no "local shops" that can fix PS3s. This isn't the 90's and this isn't Sega Genesis or SNES where you could take it anywhere to get fixed. You also, don't even know what you're talking about. How do you even know what model they send back?

TC, my PS3 died on me aswell before Christmas. It was a 60 gig model, a 60 gig model was returned and it only took a week. You don't actually send to Sony Corp, as it goes to a repair shop certified by Sony in your general area. If you happen to live close to one you can drop it off yourself, but chances are you have to send it out. But you cannot go to any shop to get it fixed.

From all that I've been seeing, I would say so. But it's only an assumption as it's not actually confirmed by Sony.

But I'm included as I've had the same happen to me and I have the 60 gig model.

If that's the case, wouldn't it be a HDD specific issue?

I got it aswell, two days ago. it was a Launch 60Gig. - Out of warrenty so would have cost $190CAD to get fixed and comes back with a 90 day warrenty. I Just went out and bought an 80gig with a 3 year warrenty - peice of mind was worth the extra cost form me --- didn't want to get it back and have it break again in 91days.

Dude they can. They got guys that can fix 360 RROD and PS3 in my Dorm. It isn't rocket science all you need is to be knowledgeable about Electronics, and have the right tools.

I don't think there are many shops like that, at least not where I live

I would call Sony and see what they suggest

well mine just got it last night. sux, but I saw it coming... Had to borrow my brothers 60GB Sony said to fill out some info online then they'll send me a box to ship it. $150!!! WHACK

My only problem is the fact I have a PS3 game in it which wont come out. I doubt it'll still be in there when/if it gets returned (original 60GB model).

wow TinoDeVoe sorry you had to go through all of that. I'm glad i didn't get the sixty gig model now. I was furious with ms for getting the rrod twice over the span of two years. I can't imagine how ticked i would have been if i had payed 600 for the system and it did that too me. Also mine is collecting some dust too, I keep trying to get way from wrath of the lich king but it keeps pulling me back in.

After reading all this, is there actually any PS3 model which is preferable to get? Like the old 40gb or new 80gb model?

I think you shouldn't have to worry about your system breaking down if you take good care of it. You also have to know that things eventually do break down after regular wear and tear. What's worrying is that most of the systems that are deciding to fail are breaking once they go past their 1 year warranty...

Didn't a lot of the original non-slim line PS2's clunk it just after the warranty finished? My PS2 only finished up about 8 or 9 months back after getting it in Dec 2002 and that was because the laser got weaker and stopped reading games properly so I just threw it out.

I got the yellow light of death last week and was awaiting a refurbished 60gig today ... didnt arrive so i rang sony they told me that they've run out of the 60gig model and was awaiting more to arrive hopefully i'll get one next week. but these last couple of weeks all i've been seeing is post after post " got yellow light of death " this is really getting out of control. It seems that if you have a 60gig launch model or close to that date that the future dont look good .. BACK UP your save files if you can and any other data ( i wish i had ) cause it looks like the dreaded YLOD is gonna happen wether you like it or not.

why did you buy a 60 gig in the first place, if it was coz of the bigger hard drive then just upgrade the 40 gig

A lot of people bought the 60GB model because it is one of the few models that has the PS2 backward capabilities. It is quite rare to find them now because I think they're discontinued. You're right in that you can upgrade the PS3's hard drive, but it wasn't the HDD size that mattered, it was the BC of the PS3.

because it was the only model that was available aside from the crappy 20 gig , both models are doomed to fail, and i doubt sony would fix it cause i imported it from japan , im going to try and contact them , crossing my fingers here :(.

After a year and nine months my 60gb bit it today as well. Very disappointing. I treated that thing like a god, but it died anyway while installing DMC4. Bad timing, considering my hours at work got slashed to nearly nothing last month, and I've been perpetually broke since then.

yeah....I got stuck with pretty much the most pathetic group of internet-tough guys trying to make a point ....people telling me to post my PSN id or whatever. I didn't bother posting on these forums after that, considering the lack of moderation on top of all the BS comments. I still read the reviews on here though, at least those were pretty good.

As for the yellow light issue, Sony took care of the problem and it was replaced under warranty with what looked like a brand new 60g system, even though it showed as refurbished. I've been using this one all the time and it works great (albeit the fan is louder than the old ps3) I'm thinking of selling this on ebay since I never use the BC feature and i dont want to get stuck with the yellow light issue again since its still happening.

They will replace any out of warranty PS3's with the SAME MODEL... for $160. I got mine back in a week. I was damn glad I didn't lose backwards compatability, which is extremely important to me. Too bad I lost 10 years worth of saved game data.
