So I just bought God of War.... Impressions......

Ok so I just bought GOW1 and have played it for around 2 hours. I'm entirely new to the series and haven't played any of the games, but with the intense GOW3 hype I thought it was time to see what all the fuss is about. Well, the first impressions are extremely good.

Let me start by saying the graphics are amazing for a PS2 game! The lighting is impressive, water effects are great and the framerate is solid. The actual gameplay itself is fantastic! I'm loving the whole chain blades thing they have going on the ability to use magic and upgrade attacks is a nice addition. The ease of pulling off combos makes it extremely fun and addictive and the additional puzzle solving and platforming elements are a nice addition to seperate battles.

The best part however for me is the boss battles. I've only fought one main boss so far which was the huge snake in the sea thing and the scale of the battles is epic! Also, triggering the button sequences with small and large enemies was a fantastic idea and as I understand it was these guys that invented it. Kudos to them! Again, I'm amased by the scale of the fights and graphics achieved, really incredible for a PS2 game!

Finally, the story seems to be very promising. I'm a great fan of ancient greek mythology and the character design is stunning. Also, I finally understand why everyone is calling Kratos the biggest bad ass. Crawling into the mouth of a Snake, taking that key and telling the guy 'I'm not here for you' while snatching the key and letting him die screams BAD ASS.

To sum it up, I think the game is fantastic and it definitely deserves the praise it gets. I shall be looking forward to buying God of War II very soon which unfortunately happens to be out of stock nearly everywhere. If there is anyone else like me that hasn't played the series and is unsure whether to get into it, DO IT NOW! I bought the game from play.com for £9.99 brand new which is an absolute steal.

All in all, fantastic game!

I have yet to play any of them. Waiting for my 60Gb to come in the mail, but I am adding God of War to the "to buy" list.

Well, like Raven, I hated Kratos. He was an assh***.

There's a fine line between badass and jackass with me and you're either or, no grey.

Not only that, but the story was less than stellar... I mean, people talk about how he kills a God, but for me it's like "so what?"

They never really illustrate in the game just how powerful a God really is; all they do is rely on the player's common knowledge about them. "Oh, Gods are immortal and can't die, so when Kratos kills them, everyone will freak out and love him."

Yeah, that doesn't work for me... I don't know, maybe it's because the Gods were just Gods and nothing else. The developers didn't really go into characterization or anything... they were just there - Gods.

It's kinda like the whole Mario vs. Bowser deal... Bowser has no personality. He just takes the princess. Why? They never explain it, all you know is that you need to get the princess. Mario isn't seen as this ridiculous badass though because he's a half inch plumber with a stupid accent and Bowser's just a horny turtle.

All you need to do is copy and paste Kratos and any God he's killed onto that scenario and you've got the same thing, only a blood thirstier protagonist, a tiny bit more plot, breasts and small, if not completely ridiculous motive.

Anyway, that's just my opinion... I got through about 3/4 of both GoW games before I ended up getting bored of both.

I also wanted to know this hype for GoW3, so i bought 1&2,both for $20, but had been bz with ps3 games till a month ago. having GoW1&2 sitting in the closet for a few months, finally decided to see whats this hype is all about. well the TC is basically on point about everything about GoW1. i mean im the type that just plays a game through once till beaten, n nvr look back, but GoW1 is the first game that i replayed, n on "God Mode!" I got to the final battle n gave up after many hours of getting no where. hats off to all those that beat it in the "no upgrade runs!" so ya, i put in GoW2 n just beat it. i DL the GoW3 trailer on PSN after i beat GoW1 n watch it all the time! after finishing GoW2, now i know exactly what i have been watching in the trailer! this series will nvr top the MGS series, cuz nothing will IMO, but damn, its a close second, nim part of this "GoW Hype!" time to watch that trailer again! CANT WAIT FOR GoW3!!!:D

GOW2 is great, the story the ending, the gameplay, everything. Definitively expecting a great sequel or wtv ....you know what i mean.
