If the PS3 upconverts DVDs to 1080p, is there any point in spending more money for blu-ray movies? I know there is more space, but im not too lazy to change a disc if it means i'm going to save 15+ dollars.

if you dont mind seeing a regular 4x6 photo blown up to poster size, then no there is no point
when a dvd is up scaled to a higher res, the conversion is painting in pixels that were never there in the original source, so you will always have a sharper image and more vibrant colors with a blu ray movie than the best up converter available
Yes, blu ray will still have an overall cleaner image than an upconverted dvd image. Is there any point in buying ps3 games seeing as how it upconverts ps1/ps2 games, exactly. TM1
Of course PS3 games are going to look better than PS1/2 games, what kind of statement is that? I just wanted to know if the movies would look the same as BD when up-converted. Well, I have Talladega Nights, and It looks nice. But it's not like I can compare it to Talladega Nights on DVD, cause I'm not going to waste money renting/buying the same movie. Anyways, thanks for the input guys, I thinks me will have to buy Planet Earth for the ultimate viewing experience on Blu-Ray!
its just sony trying to market their new product (blu-ray) through the PS3neXtgenisis
says the 360 fanboy. Why do you guys bother to come on the PS3 boards if all you do is put it down? And how is it purely a marketing scheme when there are extremely noticeable differences in both video and audio quality?

seems to me like this fanboy is upset because he can't play blu-rays on his 360.
my advice to you is:
1. stop trolling on our boards you're embarassing yourself. and...
2. go get your 360 fixed. i could already smell the smoke coming out of the ring of death.

It really depends on the type of Tv you own. On my Sony Wega tube TV dvds look really crisp and it doesn't lack anything. On my LCD TV and CRT HDTV DVDs doesn't lookas good. So it all depends on the type of Tv you own.

Do you even have a PS3? Do you have an HDTV? If you answered yes to both questions. Get a Blu-ray version of a DVD that you already have and just... compare. That's it. Just compare the two, and then make your own decision. Then you will see for yourself, irregardles of what anyone lectures you about, OK.
I did (Superman DVD upscaled & Superman Blu-ray). THERE'S A NOTICEABLE DIFFERENCE!

There's just one simple thing to this, upscaling DVDs to 1080p doesn't do anything! It just helps make DVDs appear more watchable on a HD tv, it no way makes it actual HD quality. Now and then you might have some good dvd releases that were done great and can appear flawless, but it's still not HD.
So you might as well throw out the upscaling part on your decision to spend $15 more dollars. If you want to really know, maybe upsacling brings DVD quality up 10% at best. While switching to a Blu-ray at 1080p will be like 600% boost in just resolution, then an extra better quality tahnks to no no macroblocking or compression artifacts that dvds suffer from you have a pristine high resolution image.

I think he meant just the resolution of the game, not the quality such as textures and polygons. Many people thought as soon as they got 1080p upconverting for PS1/2 games that it would magically make them look better, like they were high resolution and no more jaggies. But guess what happened, the upscaling didn't do anything much, nothing was going to change the fact that the games were low-res jagged resolutions and could never compete with a game truely rendered at 1080p. Same with DVDs. It's like going into the game screenshot area here and grabbing a thumbnail preview and enlarging it 6 times the size, do you think it's going to look as good as the original at that size?
Blu-ray are not all the same, some will look amazing, some will look poor. Talladega Nights is considered to be one of the lowest Blu-ray in terms of picture quality. It;s Tier 4, considered s Soft or occasionally artifacted. An overall flat but satisfactory image. Not the best example of HD. Here's a list for the best quality and worse: http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=858316[url]
Though, haven't you downloaded HD 1080p trailers off the store? While they have macro blocking and compression that can hurt overall quality that blu-ray doesn't suffer, it should still give you an idea.
Planet Earth looks great, but it's source is not the best all the time and some scenes can have compression issues. Just make sure you pay only $66, that's what I paid at Best Buy after showing them a Target.com printout at the register. Or go to [url]http://www.deepdiscount.com/viewcart.htm?discountId=dvdtalk&y=0&x=0 and use "DVDTALK" coupon for 20% off and get Planet Earth for $53.47. Only works on instock movies.
I don't know what size tv you have, maybe it's small and you don't need HD on every movie you watch. But if you have a favorite movie you might consider, just go to www.hidefdigest.com and check the review to make sure the quality is worth paying for. And then you can always rent blu-ray.

thats not a fair comparison seeing as they arent selling the same games with better graphics but dvd to bluray you get same movie slightly better quality(noticable though)
Some people think upscaling is this magical thing. 1080p has 6 times the resolution has 480i/p. Upscaling cannot magically create those missing pixels. Blu-ray looks much better than upscaled DVD.
I rented the hybrid HD-DVD/DVD disc of Tokyo Drift. Switching between 480p and 720p was so painfully obvious.

And it's not resolution sometimes too, the HD format has superior compression and color. The opening for Tokyo Drift on DVD is filled with macroblocking and ringing around credits while the HD-DVD side every frame is prefectly rendered. Dare I say even a dvd resolution put on a new HD format would look tons better than the dvd disc because of the better compression and bandwidth.
And a good upscaler was never just about the resolution increase, the good ones had imaging chips like faroudja to reduce the artifacting and aliasing from dvds to try and achieve a more smooth and natural image on a HDTV instead of looking like a computer mpeg.
