Dude if u have no screen I dont think theres anything u can do... soz!:(
I like how nobody even read the post. :P Yeah dude, all I can really say is wow...I've never even heard of anything like that happening to a brand new bundle. Did you have it closed up in a cramped area with no room to breath? Because that's all I could really think of that would cause such a thing.

There's a warranty and Sony is honoring it. Nowhere in the warranty does it say they're going to shower you with gifts for having one of the rare defective PS3's.
The victim mentality is way too rampant nowadays.
I had a similar behavior issue after upgrading my HDD. I just put the PS3 in stand-by, turned it off in the back, unplugged it, and gave it a few minutes. Next boot up went perfectly fine.

Of course I'd be upset, but it happens. It's not a controlled event, it's not something they did on purpose and need to apologize for.

I am not asking to be showered with friggin gifts, I am asking for compensation. I gave Sony $500 and was compensated with an 80GB PS3 bundle. Now said 80GB PS3 bundle does not do what I paid $500 for, and will not do so for 2 weeks at the very least, and yet I receive no compensation for those 2 weeks.

Your compensation for receiving a broken PS3 is you're getting a working PS3. They're not going to compensate you for time, why would they? You didn't buy time off them.

Then at what point should I be compensated for time? Surely at some point the amount of time I'm without a PS3 would become unacceptable. I'm not saying that 2 weeks, or maybe even any shorter than a month is unacceptable, but to say that I didn't pay $500 for time as well has to be wrong. If, just for example, it took several months, or say the entire console generation for me to get my PS3 back, should I not then be compensated for my time? And if I could be compensated for that length of time, could I not then be compensated to a lesser degree for these several weeks I'm without my PS3?

Your hypothetical in no way, shape, or form legitimzes your want for compensation for the time of warranty process. By your logic we should be compensated for waiting any length of time for a fast food order...heck, moreso if you're in the drive through burning insanely expensive gas. When I go to Wendy's and order from the box, then pay for my meal, I have to actually drive to the next window and wait sometimes up to 15secs to get my food. Insane! I want it the second the money hits the cashiers hand! I demand compensation!

please don't put words in my mouth
maybe it overheated a bit if you had it in a place were it gets no air like the little glass doors some place where u put ur tv and u had the doors closed or it was on ur carpet....but any ways how many times did u try ??sddelta
I tried quite a few times actually, though I'm not sure exactly how many it'd probably take 2 hands to count them. And that was before I called Sony and they took me through a lot of the same steps. Before I opened it I kept it at the foot of my bed, which I wouldn't exactly call a cramped space. When I hooked it up I put it on the carpet under my TV, right next to my X360 Elite. I could very well be wrong but I don't think that was the problem.
[QUOTE="kevin_amadi"]please don't put words in my mouthemitsu97
I'm not, it was a similar example using your previously posted logic.
I disagree, it was not a similar example. If it was a problem I could fix myself, or even with their support over the phone, then that would be another matter entirely. The fact that I have to go completely outside the regular process by mailing my PS3 to Sony and be without it for a time is what I should be compensated for.
ouch thats rough. thats the first time ive heard of that situation. all i can tell you is go out and enjoy the fresh air for the next 2 weeks because when your ps3 comes back, you wont see daytime for a while. :)SBDTANGO

Well. I've ran into some issues with the 80GB PS3 before. My screen froze when I started up. It was kind of freaky because I had my system for 2 months. My entire hard drive was wiped out with all my saves which sucked but thankfully I backed everything up to a USB drive. I reformatted my hard drive and haven't ran into a problem since. Good luck! I hope your system comes to you ASAP.Versus_XIII
thanx:)

This is the regular process. The is the same exact process everyone goes through if they need warranty issues resolved by Sony.
you had it on carpet? that may have been your mistake right there. its highly recommended NOT TO HAVE THE PS3 on carpet floor if it does have to be on the floor. that can cause problems for it.IntegraBella
I never knew that, thanks a ton. Though I've had my 360 on that same carpet for 5 months now, my Wii since launch, and my PS2 for exactly 3 years and they all work fine. Do you know if that only applies to PS3?

The PS3 actually has a solid bottom (horizontal) and solid left side (HDD-vertical) so it shouldn't have any adverse airflow effects. It would however suck in more particle debris from being so close to the carpet as well as stand a greater chance of static shock. The way the 360 breathes/vents I would at least put it on a phone book or shoe box. If you've gone 3 years with your PS2 then you should stand to have a similar run with the PS3 and Wii in the same place.

Dammit! I knew the word "regular" would come back to bite me in the ass! I waited like 20 minutes before posting trying to come up with a better word than "regular", but I got nothin. Anyway, while this is the "regular" process for warranty issues, it is not the "regular" process for setting up and troubleshooting a PS3. That is what my argument is.

You know what funny to. Out of the .6 out of 100 that break down. Message boards hear about them before they try and fix them lol. 1 out of 200. And about 1 out of 5000 new ones. Ill have to do teh math on whats the precentage of PS3 owners that have a chance of one breaking down, and then posting about it also. Has to be like 1 in 50,000

Well, you did call Sony and told them what happened, they tapped into their pool of knowlege regarding the issue as best they could over a phone minus visual examination and did the best they could, at least they aren't charging you...
And compensation? Come on bro, if places started doing that they would lose money over sales, plus its not their (Sony's) fault for faulty hardware, its the manufacturer who assembled it.
Have you tried reading the Manual because no one seems to do that anymore...?
Something similar happened to my friends ps3 bundle and this is what he use to fix it.Hold the "on" button in front of the ps3 untill you hear 2 "beeps".The first on will turn it off and the other one is suppost to fix your screen problem.hotfire844
Thanks, though I already tried that when I called Sony

The only thing uncommon about your whole experience is that you were one of the unlucky few to get a defective PS3. It doesn't have anything to do with set-up or troubleshooting. Options for defective warrantied products are usually A.) Replacement from Retail, B.) Replacement from Manufacturer, or C.) Repair from Manufacturer (assuming the prodcut is such it can't be replaced.
I think Sony should give you a free game. Call up Famijitsu Natsake, he's the customer compliance officer at Sony. His number is 1-7477-548-2641. Tell him M. G. Ray sent you. PS3 and PSPee are showering shades of golden love on me. C'mon really, Aliens? That is too West Wing for me. Bring back the dead, and then we'll talk. Until then, keep the Aliens in the port holes.

i agree
I sympathize that you have a highly anticipated game that you want to play immediately, but this is the process. I've gone through it with a friend of mine, and I think it's a lot better than many other warranty claims I've dealt with. Sony responded to you quickly. They send you the box, you do not have to package it yourself. They assume shipping costs, they do not require you to pay for shipping, nor do they say that they will reimburse you in 6-8 weeks or whenever they feel like it. In 10 business days or less, you will have a tested and working PS3 that's still under warranty. Sorry for your bad luck, but I don't think you are owed any more compensation than you are getting.Race
I respectfully disagree, very respectfully. You make a great point.
Well to be honest Sony's customer support and service suck. They really don't offer you anything for your trouble which in fact IS their fault for selling you faulty hardware that's not cheap...so naturally any other company would offer some type of incentive for your troubles. I mean Microsoft at least gives you free arcade games and Xbox Live subscriptions. Microsoft once gave me a free game for my problems. All I can say is that you have the right to be mad and should be mad, just ignore the people that always defend Sony on everything and think it's always the consumers fault when their merchandise dies. Good luck with getting a replacement unit fast!

That's kinda my point, this being outside the whole "regular" process of set-up & troubleshooting
I got the 80GB bundle from a local GameStop's midnight release, but I didn't open it till yesterday cause I'd been working all week. Anyway, about 7 A.M. Wednesday morning I finally hooked it up, proceeded to download firmware 2.36 (which took over an hour), install said firmware, then open a PSN account. That being done, I then cycled through avatars to see how they looked on my XMB, then @ 9:20 A.M. Standard Central Time . . . screen freezes. It was exactly how Super Nintendo games used to freeze with the screen all garbled. Anyway, I turned it off, then turned it back on but there was no picture or sound, though the green light on the PS3 was still on. I switched to my PS2 AV-cables (I don't have an HDTV), but still nothing. I called Sony and they basically took me through the same steps I'd already done. So they're sending me their box thingy (which'll take 3-4 days) to put my PS3 in and send to them (they didn't say how long this would take) so they can send me a replacement (7-10 days from when they get mine). It's no charge but still, it'd be nice to be compensated in some way for my time and trouble. Needless to say I'm pretty suicidal right now. I didn't even get to startMetal Gear and at best, it'll be another 2 weeks till I do. Has this happened to anyone else? Does anyone know of a better (read: quicker) way to fix this?! Can't somebody do something?!!! SNAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAKE!!!!!!kevin_amadi
I agree with you. Screw some of these posters who sound as if they work for Sony. It is Sony's fault whether it was intended or not that the product you purchased didn't work. At the very least you deserve a sorry just because it's good customer service but it is certainly not wrong to feel like there should be some compensation. You paid for working equipment and now you have to take the time to send the defective product in when it should of worked in the first place. Not to mention the loss of use for the equipment which you paid $500 for to be able to use immediately upon purchase.
Anyways, at least a $10 credit to psn or a small token for your trouble would be appropriate and good customer service. Not that big companies care about the individual anymore...

Sony didn't sell faulty hardware, it's a byproduct of mass manufacturing, hence the warranty.
As for the other camp, it's the least they can do to help hedge the increasing ranks of an angry mob and a the possibility of a class action lawsuit.
It sucks you're in the position you're in but demanding additional reparation over what is necessary or fair isn't cool.

You really should not keep an electronic system on a carpet because of static electricity, a static shock can easily blow some parts and a carpet/rug etc can generate quite a bit of static, it shouldnt really happen as the chassis on the consoles will be earthed but its not reccomendable.
If you have not tried this already, try resetting your console by turning it on standby then press and hold the power button for several seconds, it will turn on with the two lights but keep holding the button down untill you hear it beep again or if you hold it even longer it will beep then turn off try them both.
I took my ps3 to my friends the other week but he didnt have an hdtv so when i plugged it in the pic wouldnt come one because it was set to hdmi so i just reset it using the method i mentioned above and it worked. you may have already tried this but i just mentioned it incase you have not.
Also im not sure what type of compensation you think you deserve for your system breaking, i had 3 ps2's die from disc read error and i got nothing except two £75 bills(1 was fixed for free as it was inside the warrenty date) and i didnt expect anything although they should have fixed it for free since dre was rampant in those early days and i had 3 break but never got any compensation(a game or something, the last 2 i never even got fixed for free).
My 360 died several months after launch and they give me a faceplate and 3 months free xbox live, i have heard of people getting games also, is this why you think you deserve compensation because other 360 owners have had free gifts, its a different matter RROD was rampant back then, ps3 is a reliable system with a small defect % although theres been allot more lately.
Your compensation is they will fix the system for free or ship you another one because of your warrenty, you dont get anything for the lost gaming time, im not sure what you want or expect but this is the normal procedure for broken consoles and it has been forever.
