Since his PS3 is barely 2 weeks old it doesn't sound right to have so much freezing and lagging. Mine has frozen up totally half a dozen times in nearly a year. It can depend on the games, which ones does he own? If he's playing buggy unpolished RPGs like Dragon Age & Fallout it would be the games not the console.

Answering a couple questions would really help out, so that more people can answer your question. First off, are you talking about online play or just playing a normal game? If you are talking about online play, what games? I ask this because there are some games that are terrible about lag, or have known issues, etc. If you are talking about normal play, then no, I do not normally experience lag when I play. Occassionaly I would get a bit of lag when I played Dragon Age: Origins for a split second, but other than that, nothing really.

That game has some performance issues - tons of tearing in-game as well as a very spotty framerate when you get a bunch of cars onscreen at once. That may account for the lag. Load times between menus are also quite long. Hopefully he's installed it, or both issues will be worse.

Its installed but its Mostly just while where playing the game will just freeze or lag out Really slow then we will have to turn it off for a couple mins take the disc out and put it back in . I told him to take it back to the store .

Yeah, that's not normal, even for GT5. He should definitely get a replacement.

Sounds right, I'd return it in his position.

Multiplat games use the same servers for PS3 and X360 so one doesn't has more lag than the other. Many people seem to believe that just because they pay for XBL playing games online on the X360 is magically better but it is not, is the same. You pay $60 for XBL for the additional features and more connected community like for example: cross-game chart and universal party invites but the actual performance is the same.

Your friend has a faulty PS3. Or he's playing Fallout New Vegas.

Sounds like he's gotten a defect copy, if he still got the waranty then replace it.

Yes there's screen tear but there's never been freeze or lag out... in my experience.
