First off comparing BC in all consoles is like comparing apples and oranges. The Wii can do it because the hardware of the two consoles is basically the same. I am not saying this to bash the wii, it is true. The wii is just a somewhat more beefed up version of the cube with a disc format that has more memory. Nintendo didn't put in extra hardware or software emulation for the wii to run GC games because the hardware is the same so they don't need to. the Xbox has BC but downloading patches and putting them on to a disc isn't exactly a great way to offer it. The only reason the Xbox originals are on the store is because they can't be emulated. I have not done it myself, but I have also heard about bugs and glitches with the xbox compatibility. Microsoft does not make anymore money off of the first Xbox whereas sony still makes some money off of PS2.
Sony discontinued BC for the following reasons
When BC was standard in PS3's no one bought the system
Removing BC made the PS3's cheaper
Sony still makes money off of PS2.
If Sony brought back BC, then they would have to charge for the system which still complain to this day is too expensive. If they didn't charge for BC, they would lose money and companies want to make money.
Even the PS3 has problems play PS2 games. For example, Shadow Hearts from the new world froze up on me several times. Final Fantasy 12 looked worse than on the PS2.
Your best bet for playing PS2 games is to stick with PS2 because the game is guaranteed to play on it.
