i read an article online stating how to know if your ps3 is backwards compatible, it is done by cheking the serial number on the back , and apparently my ps3 is backwards compatible, i was filled with joy thinking that i can finally play the most epic ps series ever, metal gear, so i bought mgs2 on the stores 2day for 4 bucks, it was immaculate and looked like a brand new game no scratches etc etc and so i got it and i put it in the disk and it said something like "format not supprted".

why cant the ps3 have Backwards compatability? xbox has it, even the wii, why cant the ps3?

HailedJohnDman

Sony took backwards compatibility out of the PS3 after the launch ones because a) PS2 backwards compatibility is expensive and b) Sony is still selling PS2's so I think they're trying to see how far that system goes until people stop purchasing.

Also, Xbox 360 is only backwards compatible with a handful of games. Not all. The Wii is backwards compatible because, well, it's very similar to the Gamecube. Hell, you might as well just call it neutral-compatible.

Sony as well as other developers are re-releasing PS2 games as "collections" or separately on the Playstation Network lately. There's a Metal Gear Solid collection rumored soon enough in HD if you're interested in that.

Totally different architecture, they took out the EE they put in the 60GB to save a couple bucks. I'm sure if the architecture were more similar, emulation would be feasible. Also, since the PS4 will not be cell-based...RIP BC.

I still can't see the big deal about backward compatibility. It seems that people should want to play ps3 games on their ps3s and 360 games on their 360s. Backwards compatibility seems like a non issue. I mean one generation back only one system was backwards compatible and before that nearly none of them were. Atari 7200 is the only system i can think of.

Isn't it your fault for not checking whether it was backwards compatible? You wouldn't see a Wii or 360 with BC if their predecessors were still selling, as is the case with the PS3. I think we may even see a BC PS3, but I'm doubtful now that we're nearing the PS4. I'm sure it'll have PS2 BC.

No, never buy used consoles from Gamestop. Even if they're in good condition, the price is usually a rip-off. Also, there's more to having a PS3 with PS2 BC than just being able to play your PS2 games on it.

i feel your pain. I have a slim so there was never a chance and i missed MGS3. I agree though that sony hasn't done enough on their part i understand why we lost full compatibility but they should have at least attempted a software solution. If the 360 can do it so can the ps3. Also to the guy that said the 360 only supports a handful is def lying. There are a ton of games that work and most of them are the games that your gonna want to go back for.

Not to sound rude or anything, but you could have easily solved this question yourself by just googling something like, "Are Playstation 3 Slim consoles backwards compatible with Playstation 2 games"? I mean, if you're going to drop $300 dollars on a new piece of hardware, you could at least do the bare minimum of research on it, especially before you go out to buy media for it that you're not even sure if it plays.

I think PS2's are still selling, so I doubt they're gonna bring back BC anytime soon.

I just asked my friend if I could have his and he was more then welcome to let me have it. I don't even play it.

Xbox games are software emulated which means that every game needs to emulate a unique code in order to work. Suffice to say, this takes a lot of work and effort and this is why most of the games don't work, and the ones that do don't wok too well. It's a reason Microsoft abandoned that project a couple of years ago.

First off comparing BC in all consoles is like comparing apples and oranges. The Wii can do it because the hardware of the two consoles is basically the same. I am not saying this to bash the wii, it is true. The wii is just a somewhat more beefed up version of the cube with a disc format that has more memory. Nintendo didn't put in extra hardware or software emulation for the wii to run GC games because the hardware is the same so they don't need to. the Xbox has BC but downloading patches and putting them on to a disc isn't exactly a great way to offer it. The only reason the Xbox originals are on the store is because they can't be emulated. I have not done it myself, but I have also heard about bugs and glitches with the xbox compatibility. Microsoft does not make anymore money off of the first Xbox whereas sony still makes some money off of PS2.

Sony discontinued BC for the following reasons

When BC was standard in PS3's no one bought the system

Removing BC made the PS3's cheaper

Sony still makes money off of PS2.

If Sony brought back BC, then they would have to charge for the system which still complain to this day is too expensive. If they didn't charge for BC, they would lose money and companies want to make money.

Even the PS3 has problems play PS2 games. For example, Shadow Hearts from the new world froze up on me several times. Final Fantasy 12 looked worse than on the PS2.

Your best bet for playing PS2 games is to stick with PS2 because the game is guaranteed to play on it.

When PS3 was released people complained that it was too expensive, so they got rid of some hardware to make it cheaper. Now that the price is down, people are complaining because the hardware is missing. I'm glad I don't work for Sony, it must be a real chore trying to appease morons.

Only the 20 GB, 60 GB, 80 GB (with 4 USB ports) are backwards compatible. The 20 and 60 GB PS3 have the PS2 chips in them, while the 80 GB has half hard ware and half software because on of the chips in the 80 GB PS3 has been removed. Non of the slims have backwards compatiblity. I think they should bring back backwards compatiblity, but it's not likely to come back while they are still selling PS2's. I think they should never have removed it in the first place.

Exactly this. I had one of the original 60GB PS3 systems. I was excited to get to play my PS2 games on it since my PS2 system was acting up. Almost every game I played on it save the Devil May Cry series had glitches out the wazoo to the point that they just weren't playable. They froze in the most inopportune times, the sound would randomly disappear, enemies would glitch invisible, the graphics were horrid, and one time I had emenies that were suddenly invincible. I don't miss the BC. I went and bought a PS2 slim instead. It's used and has it's probles, but it works just fine. The BC was removed long before they even started making the PS3 slim systems.

Over 400 games is a pretty big handful ;)

Hazzard6X

theres over 950 Xbox original games.. and even then alot of the ones listed as "compatible" barely work or half the game is super glitchy... Xbox compatibility is a joke...

You're full of crap. Xbox games work just fine on the 360.

go play Mercenaries on it or Max Pain and try saying that again

i had to sell my xbox mercenaries for a ps2 version cause of how buggy it was on the 360

Also, Xbox 360 is only backwards compatible with a handful of games. Not all.

I've tried Fable 1, PoP: Warrior Within, Halo 2 and GTA: San Andreas and they all work fine for me :S

i find that statement funny since i cant play mgs2 on my ps3 but i can on my xbox

When did I say anything about 80gb compatibility being better than 360/Xbox compatibility? The 80gb is garbage.. BC is really only prevalent on the 20/60

I didn't call you anything, I said it seems like youare here to start trouble. Trying to "act" like your neutral but at the same time promoting the features of the "other" system. Why don't people like you grow up and leave the true multi-console gamers alone??

MarcRecon

what? i am simply stating that i am hugely dissapointed that i am not able to play mgs2 on my ps3, face it, one of the reason the ps3 is a fail is the lack of BC, YOU CANT DENY THAT, to deny so will be the sole reason why anyone would think your a fanboy, stop acting like an ass and get over it, i cant cause i cannot play my most favourite game franchise

:P....your trolling is pretty obvious...there's no need for me to continue:)

*facepalm* i do believe i have met the epitome of internet moronicness , such a failed troll you are

It's quite simple actually. Why let you buy used PS2 games that they don't make a profit off of, when they can make you buy "HD remakes" instead.dk00111
Or maybe it has to do with the fact that they were still moving PS2s and losing money on every PS3 sold at the same time? You really think they'd take out BC simply to make people buy these HD collections when there are only 2 or 3 out right now? As far as I know, few people and small development time are needed to make these collections, so you would see way more out by now if that was their intention.

I think the person who didn't check his/her PS3 for BC before buying a PS2 game is more deserving of that title. I wasn't happy when I found out that PS2 BC was being taken out of the PS3, but it was understandable given that the PS2 was still selling, and the price of the PS3 was dropping $100.

I'm sure the TC(UNLESS HE/SHE HAS BEEN LIVING UNDER A ROCK)knew about the BC issue, it's been a well known fact before and well after the slim was released. Just read all of the TC's post, it's pretty clear(besides the need for some attention:P)why this thread was created.
