For those not up on the latest news, you can read that here.

It does not sound good for Sony. From what I've heard and understand from other people, reportedly hackers will be able to do basically whatever they want now on the console. This, if true, pretty much means pirated games and hacker's paradise, making online features of games much less enjoyable. Sony claims they can fix this through firmware, but the hacker group that did it says it is an issue that can only be fixed with new hardware. In any case, expect a bundle of firmware updates within the next couple of weeks, if not throughout the PS3's remaining lifespan. I don't mean to sound all doom and gloom, but it's unfortunate that this has happened, if true - which it seemingly is. Too bad hackers had to ruin my favorite console. :(

If true, you can definitely expect more hackers in online games.

This means: 1. Hackers messing online games cheating. 2. More piracy 3. Possible and faster launch of the next PS 4. Tons and tons of trash games if piracy goes rampant. To clarify it is not the same with the _box 3_0 because is needs hardware modification. An example is the PSP rampant piracy that has made developers abandon the platform and much of the games are trash. As for the Ninten_o D_ quality games always sales because of the giant loyal fanbase.

Why can't you play your PS3 if the "PS4" releases...? I still play consoles from every generation....

Sony would most likely fix it... All they have to do is put 100000 of firmwares up as usual that don't benefit us when we think is Cross game chat or something but its top notch security... It'll end up to a point that the PS4 will be a Turret and if u try to hack it it will shoot you :P

Me too, im not bothered at all about this. Ive never had any of my consoles chipped or otherwise. I get a certain amount of satisfaction from buying a game, and playing through til i complete it. The only thing that bothers me is we'll probably get a featureless firmware update in the coming weeks

Why? I think this generation is starting to show its age. It's not very visible now, but in a year or two I think sony should start releasing info about the PS4.

If anything more people will buy Sony's console to play free GT5 and Uncharted... Don't fret about it the hackers themselves don't want piracy on the consoles so if anything it'll just reopen Linux and allow apps for recording footage and so on to be used... Sony should hire the guys who broke the security, maybe an innovative mind will bring us crossgame chat at no extra resources expense but know whos.

If you people think that devs will abandon the system due to hacking you are nuts. If this hack sticks then EVERYTHING is hackable and piracy-enabled. If the devs don't keep making quality games then they won't make money cause there's literally no where else for them to go. :P

This means:

1. Hackers messing online games cheating. Already happens

2. More piracy 3. Possible and faster launch of the next PS Doesn't speed up another console's release date

4. Tons and tons of trash games if piracy goes rampant. Already happens and it did not need "piracy" as an excuse

To clarify it is not the same with the _box 3_0 because is needs hardware modification. An example is the PSP rampant piracy that has made developers abandon the platform and much of the games are trash. As for the Ninten_o D_ quality games always sales because of the giant loyal fanbase.

Are you going to explain how DS games are "high quality"? It was much, much easier to hack a DS than it was a PSP. You didn't even need to load anything..

You just know that it was a matter of time before someone would find a way to hack the PS3. As long as the PS3 hackers don't find a way to hack my PSN account, or Do something like unleash a virus to screw up PS3's. or otherwise mess things up.

Sony will release an update to fix things, or will hasten the release of another PS3 hardware revision?

Well there are 3 versions of PS2 and PS1 So I guess this will just speed up PS3 revision 3? before it is needed.

So there are going to be Pirated PS3 games on Hacked consoles, Driving up the prices on new games..

So I'm guessing Sony has planned for this? Since it was bound to happen sooner or later.

"We are aware of this, and are currently looking into it," a Sony representative told Edge. "We will fix the issues through network updates, but because this is a security issue, we are not able to provide you with any more details."

But statements that have been made by the Fail0verflow team, and were reiterated to the BBC yesterday by group member pytey, indicate that there is no simple fix this time around, as there was with the USB key hacks such as PS Jailbreak.

"The complete console is compromised – there is no way back," pytey told the reporter. "This is as bad as it gets – someone is getting into serious trouble at Sony right now. The only way to fix this is to issue new hardware."

Pytey also explained how the Fail0verflow team was able to calculate the key, which he described as something that is "supposed to be the most secret of secret of secrets – it's the Crown jewels," and exactly where Sony went wrong:

"Sony uses a private key, usually stored in a vault at the company's HQ, to mark firmware as valid and unmodified, and the PS3 only needs a public key to verify that the signature came from Sony," he said. "Applied correctly, it would take billions of years to derive the private key from the public key, or to make a signature without knowing the private key, even when you have all the computational power in the world at your disposal. The signing recipe requires that a random number be used as part of the calculation, with the caveat that that number must be truly random and not predictable in any way. However, Sony wrote their own signing software, which used a constant number for each signature."

From there, it was just a matter of using "simple Algebra" to uncover the key.

It's quite likely that Sony lawyers are very busy at the moment trying to figure out a way to put a stop to this, but pytey says he's not worried. "I haven't stolen anything," he said. "It's my own hardware, I can run whatever I like on it." If the ruling in last month's Xbox 360 mod chip trial in California is any indication, these guys should be on safe legal ground.

They said the same thing about PC, Xbox and every other platform out but that doesn't mean its going to be the end of Sony. If anything it means that Sony will be looking for hackers and banning them as issues pop up. Its not as if there is an army of PS3 hackers as it is and every game is going to be plauged with cheaters. Even if there were, do we expect Sony to just throw up their arms and say "Oh well."?

You believe a group of hackers who are exploring the system over Sony who built it, knows how it works and what it is capable of? If Sony claims they can fix this then the most likely will. I don't think they'd say something like that if they had no idea what they were doing only to make themselves look bad in the end.

[QUOTE="Vari3ty"] Sony claims they can fix this through firmware, but the hacker group that did it says it is an issue that can only be fixed with new hardware.LightR
You believe a group of hackers who are exploring the system over Sony who built it, knows how it works and what it is capable of? If Sony claims they can fix this then the most likely will. I don't think they'd say something like that if they had no idea what they were doing only to make themselves look bad in the end.

Agreed. Sony says they can fix it, and I see no reason to believe a group of hackers over the console's manufacturer. Hackers like to brag, so take what they say with a grain of salt, people. If you want to know just what was said I posted it just a couple posts up.

I'm not so sure about the "grain of salt" comment. Maybe more so for PSN itself, but PS3 as a console is a different story. If they catch wind that there's a crack in the system, they'll follow that no matter what fixes Sony puts out.

This could be after all, the answer to that flaunting "hacker challenge" a couple of years back. Now, "it's happening".

No, I'm not discounting the fact that they found a way in. I'm saying just because they say there's no fix doesn't mean we should believe them. And, yeah, the PSN thing is silly. Getting into the console has nothing to do with screwing with the network servers.

It'l be fine every console gets hacked and who the hell want a new console right now? The PS3 is amazing. It only does everything. lol. I mean yeah in like 7 yrs maybe but the xbox will have to come out with a new console before the PS3. The Xbox 360 is already out dated I mean they doesn't even have half the features PS3 does.

We don't need 30 different threads on the same topic, especially when most of us can't comprehend the magnitude of this hack. We don't know if it'll make a big difference in piracy and cheaters or whether Sony will be able to fix it, even though the hackers claim otherwise.

God lord why americans are always **** about everything even when it doesnt affect them... For your information the hack as u call it doesnt work online. To play online u have to update and if u update it breaks the hack that allows ppl to play backups. SO it isnt like the xbox 360... AND what the heck does ppl playing backups has to do with ppl cheating? I mean they are poor or they are cheap thats all i dont see the connection with cheating... Oh yeah i guess u imagine this pirate guy in a dark basement with an evil laugh MUAHAHAHA IM CHEATING MUAHAHAHA right...

Even if there were, do we expect Sony to just throw up their arms and say "Oh well."?Ninja_Zombie83

They might as well throw their arms up and say oh well because they can't do anything about it. The hackers have the master key, they can't get banned. Sony has no control over anything now. Only new hardware can fix this.

Exactly. People don't understand how much of a blow this is. With the key, people can SIGN THINGS. This is the same key that is used to sign every PS3 game, firmware update, and compatible software. A changing of the key would require a firmware update, which would have to be signed with the old key, which people know. This means that firmware updates can be easily cracked and the new keys can easily be made public. Either way, a changing of these keys would render ALL current software useless.

Now what the hell did this have to do with anything. There hasn't even been a FW update to try to stop this yet.

It's not a hack. It's the ability to sign software to make it look like it's authentic.
