My PS3 had its fan running loud as hell a couple of months before it YLOD'ed
better back up your data while you can :(
PS3 making noise tends to be the fan overworking to cool down the heat generated from the processor or there is just about abit too much dust inside your PS3. Its also helpful to know what kind of PS3 you have, is it the old Fat, the Slim or Super Slim?

It's overheating not normal and it's about to kick the bucket. You should always make sure your ps3 has enough room around it to dispense the heat. Mine sits on a desk with nothing around it. I killed my first ps3 because it was too close to the wall. The heat coming out the back had no where to go. My current ps3 is going on 5 years. I keep it at least 18" from the wall.

If you read what he wrote he clearly states it's his second SLIM.
back on topic i'd back up your files just in case but my fat ps3 sounds like a lawnmower at certain points but mine hasn't broke down yet and for a time i was playing it for 7hours non stop everyday while at work and it's still going fine and i've had it nearly 5years.Â
I have an old school fat PS3 (got it like 6 years ago now) and the fan only really turns on when I've been gaming a while (like a half hour to an hour) and if the tempurature in the room is too warm. Typically it always turns on when I play during the summer, as the room is warmer. During the winter the room is cooler and the fan virtually never turns on. The fact that yours does it initially upon boot up is questionable to me. If you could afford it I would remove the harddrive, get a new PS3 altogether and swap the harddrive in the new one.
