This thought recently creeped into my mind as I have an older model (80GB B/C) and it has been acting up a little bit lately (freezing up, making the 3 beep sound). I don't have a job.. I have nothing to sell.. And I play a lot of ps3.. Please hold up for me buddy, I NEED YOU. Would you guys be as screwed as me?

All I have to say was, thank god nobody I was pissed off at was around or nobody was being an ass around me when mine did. It wasn't so much the fact that it broke, it was the poor customer service and the fact that I had to pay $190 to replace the damn thing.

The plus side? Well, it took a week and I replayed my games again because I lost my saves and you do kinda "miss'em when you can't play'em"

I back mine up about once a month so I would go buy a slim with an extended warranty and transfer my info. I would then try to fix my phat ps3 myself and if I get it to work then continue using it and keep the slim as a back up system.

What would I do if my PS3 YLoD'd on you?

It did, and the replacement they sent wouldn't work, then the nexd had the RSOD, then the next had the YLoD again then the last one they sent I'm currently using.

Whilst this 2 month fiasco was going on I played Xbox 360 :) Buy another console dude, they only cost as much as 2 or 3 new titles now and come with 5 games so ... :) Have yourself a backup game system.

Get a replacement free of charge because I've had the presence of mind to purchase extended warranty.

Fixed it twice and bought a Slim. Will never pay crooks to repair a faulty design.

Since my saves were going to be lost I sold some games and bought a slim and a 360. I then fixed my phat that ylod'd and was able to get my saves back.

I sent mine in for repair - sold it - and bought a newer model with better internal equipment. Now I'm happy.

Yes. I would be just as screwed as you. I say to myself that I would sell all my ps3 games to get a new console, but honestly...it wouldn't be enough so why bother. At this point in time, I am dependant on my ps3 from release. Hold strong buddy!

I would probably trawl the internet in search of a DIY approach to fixing as I'm not prepared to shell out for someone else to do it. And failing that, I don't know. I'd be extremely annoyed and probably end up buying another one.

Good job I've still got a few months worth of warranty for now though

My 60 Gb did get it, before all that PS3ApocalypseBS cam about. But I had a 4 or 5 year warranty on it, so I got an 80 Gb for free, they stopped making 60 Gb when it returned it.

R.I.P. 60Gb ps3

Mine died last year. I bought the 60 Gig model when it first came out (and paid almost $600 like a jackass)...

The blu-ray laser died and wouldn't read disks. Any disk. The warranty was long since over. I had to pay Sony$190 for them to "fix" it. They sent me a replacement...but thankfully I have an external back-up so I didn't lose any game saves except for the most recently played before the crash.

The first "new" PS3 they sent didn't work out of the box. Had to send it back again. Got a third...it died in a week. I now have the FOURTH system...and it's lasted for a little over a year. I recently upgraded the hard drive to a 500 gig because I wanted the space but I still love the 60 gig model. I love the extra ports, card readers, that backwards compatability...ect...

I have no desire to buy a slim. I love my system and would gladly work my ass off to fix it again, if I had to.

Apparently not...alas...the feline must have greatly offended Gamespot...perhaps it knifed them in the backduring a rousing game of CODMW2...

I would just open it up and fix the thing and get on with life. I might not do the re flow like many do. I might just re solder the broken connections instead. Granted this could take hours to complete but it might be worth while in the end.

If it was all I had, at this point I would just get a 360.

If I'm going to be dealing with my hardware going haywire, I may as well get the hardware that actually gets some half decent support.

It already happened (60GB unsurprisingly). I brought it back to life- most likely temporarily- but bought a 250GB Slim the following day. I was considering a slim anyway.

I haven't α job, as well, but if I got the YLOD, I would buy a new PS3 (slim) for 300 €... It's quite expensive for me, too, but my mother has promised me that she will give me the money...

I would be rather pissed off since I have invested a lot of gaming time into it. It already freezes at least once a day and my PS2 died on me back in the day as well. I purposely avoided the Xbox 360 due to high reliability and durability issues but if the PlayStation 3 fails me as well then I'll just stick with Nintendo and their products. What good are the games with the console breaks?

The best thing Sony did was to incorporate a backup process into the console IMO :) I used to always be worried about this with my X360 too until I found a way around it :)

If you ever wanna back up your consoles click this link...shameless plug for my own procedure but hey, it works ;)
