Recently I have been looking into getting a PS3. I have a Wii already, but I'm starting to lose interest. I have been really eyeing the 80gb model. I really like the big harddrive, and media card support. If I go for the 40gb model, it only has 2 usb ports. However, I don't really think I need the 4 usb ports. But, if for some reason I do, can I get a USB hub for it? And which usb hubs do you recomend?

Also, I have an older Sony rear projection HD tv. It has a DVI port in the back, and I believe it only goes to 720p format. Does this affect the picture quality since the PS3 can go 1080p? Or, is there really much of a difference? Also, say I get a 1080p game, will it do anything to the picture quality for it to scale down to 720p?

There is a Rock Band USB hub for sale if you need it. I've seen it in Best Buy. I don't know the price, sorry. :( Your TV will just scale to 720p. No harm in the picture at all. It will still look awesome! :D Have fun with your great new PS3! :D Any more questions? :D

Thanks! I looked the hub up, and it's $25. So, I will probably go with the 40gb, and save the money I wouldn't spend on the 80gb for that and probably a game. What would be a good game to buy with the system? I have played Resistance at my cousins, and it was really fun, so I might go with that.

Resistance is a great game. Compelling online and great single player (with local co-op also). You must get Uncharted and Ratchet. Both are excellent single player only games. Warhawk is a crazy mulitplayer only game that will also net you a headset. It's so fun when you get a BUNCH of people in one game. Start with those 4 and choose some more later! :D

Thanks again! I've been thinking about Uncharted, but I don't know a lot about it.

Also, when you say headset, since the PS3 has Bluetooth, can I connected say a headset that I would use for my RAZR or something like that? How hard is it to set up the headset if you can?

If you are skeptical about Uncharted, I understand. It is the only game where the demo COMPLETELY sold me on the game. There are demos of Resistance, Ratchet, & Uncharted on the store to check out. There are a bunch more but I won't list them. Yes! That's (one of) the awesome thing(s) is about the PS3 is that you can use any headset, bluetooth or not. I use my headset to my PS3 and phone! It's so easy to setup. Go to settings -> Accessory settings -> Register Headset -> (Turn your headset on) -> Put the code in the PS3 for the headset when it recognizes it (should be 0000) -> And then it will be paired with it until you delete it! One weird thing is that there is a voice modifier on there. It can make you sound like Darth Vader or make you sound like a chipmunk! :P I'm not sure if it works in-game though... It comes out of the TV so you can pull stupid pranks if you want! Any more questions? PS: You can download Warhawk off the PSN store for $40 without the headset, seeing you don't need one. But you can also but it on a Blu-ray with ($60)or without a headset ($40).

Thanks man, sounds good. I will probably be buying one either this month or get one towards the end of july for my birthday.

Also, another question. I know you can put music and such on the PS3, and with the In-Game XMB coming out soon, can you hook up an iPod to your ps3 and copy all your music from the iPod to the PS3? Or, would I have to go on my computer and share the My Music folder in order to get the files off my network?

You can hook up your iPod to you PS3 and take the music off, but (in my experience) it takes forever for the files to show up. Like 10 or more minutes. For iPods, you have to search through the many folders for music, so it's a lot easier to use a flash drive. It might just be how much stuff I have on my 30 gig iPod. It's WAY faster using a flash drive and faster than that is a PSP memory stick. Congrats and hope you enjoy your PS3! :D Feel free to ask more!

The other awesome thing is if you need more memory, you can use a USB External Hard Drive, or the memory cards (which it only supports the Memory Stick Duo which is only used by Sony products).

The 80gb has been discontinued, but the MGS4 bundle has one, and in a Gunmetal finish!

There is an 80 gig MGS4 pack. Only the Motorstorm 80 gig is discontinued. 80 gig MGS4 pack is a black 80 gig PS3, MGS4, Dualshock 3, & PAIN voucher. Gunmetal PS3 is a 40 gig with limited edition MGS4 & Dualshock 3.

dylanagibson

It doesn't seem like someone has mentioned it yet, but firstly, you probably don't need four usb ports... That said, having a hub is not the same as having 4 usb ports. It's like the difference between having another wall outlet in your room or using an extension cord. Check out the Wikipedia article on USB hubs. Here is the relevant part:

A bus-powered hub is a hub that draws all its power from the host computer's USB interface. It does not need a separate power connection. However, many devices require more power than this method can provide, and will not work in this type of hub.

In contrast a self-powered hub is one that takes its power from an external power supply unit and can therefore provide full power to every port. Many hubs can operate as either bus powered or self powered hubs.

With PCs and CD/DVD writers, some manuals suggest that you plug them directly to the PC and not through a hub to avoid errors during writing. Could something coming out for the PS3 some day need to be connected directly? Not sure...honestly, probably not...but just wanted to point out that getting a hub is not the same as getting 4 ports. And the older PS3s also had memory card slots if you want to transfer photos to your PS3...

No mate it is easy, the instructions are in your PS3 manual at the back. Buy a SATA laptop HDD (go with a 5400rpm it is cheaper) then just follow instructions. There are stacks of posts on the web and GS also did an article about how to do it in their tech section.

Good luck mate.

If you need bigger hard disk, you can always buy a 2.5'' SATA HD and put that in your PS3 Click here for the guide. And the rest of your questions are most probably already answered, so have fun with your new PS3!! :) [edit:] Oh, and I do think you can transfer your photo's through wi-fi, but you'll want to use a media server program for that. You may use Twonky Vision or Tversity Media Server for that. It does work on most routers, but I know for sure that the Thomson 780 won't be able to do it (since mine can't). That router is just useless when it comes to that. So: - Install the Media Server program on your computer (mind the port forwarding on your router if needed) - Use that program to stream the photo's through wi-fi Good luck!

Now, when you say stream, that means they are only playing from my computer and aren't stored on your hdd right? I know that we don't know much about 2.40 firmware update, but if I stream the music, can I use it to play during the game. Or, if we can even play music during a game, does it have to be stored directly on the HDD?

i would get the 80 gig mgs ps 3 because for 100 more than the 40 gig you get

1. ps 2 backwards

2. 2 more usb

3. bigger harddrive and with the installation on these days you might need it

4. mgs 4

5. extra memory slots for a camera or other devices.

this saves you 25 for hub, 60 for mgs 4, 40 to 100 on extra hdd space, 120 on a new ps 2 lol.

I can always upgrade the hdd for cheaper than $100 can't I? How much are bigger hdd these days?

I really like the 2 more usb ports, and the memory card slots, and that's one of the main reasons I really want the 80gb but might buy the 40gb.

I know I'm going to flamed for this, but I never played any of the MGS games, and I don't think I'd be too into the new one. I'm more of a sports and GH/Rock Band type player. But I did really like Resistance and the Wii doesn't offer anywhere close to the kind of FPS game that Resistance was.

I already have a ps2 so I don't really need to worry about BC.

as long as you have a working ps2, dont really have an SD card with photos on it if you have a card reader on your computer put it on a thumb drive) arent that fussed on not having the extra 2 USB ports, then just go with 40GB and upgrade the HDD.

thats what i will do since ive also heard unconfirmed reports that there will be an update for the 40GB that allows ps2 playback of many games through software emulation sometime soon ( if i remembered the link i would post it)

What do you have on your hdd that is taking 30gb of space?

I probably won't have too many movies or music or photos. How many games lately require installs? I think my first few games will be Resistance, Madden, Rock Band, and maybe MGS4.

Go here if you want more USB ports, and also snag a HDMI to DVI cable while your there.

Monoprice

And go to TigerDirect or NewEgg and grab a 160gb HD for less than $80. All set with 160 gigs and 5 USB ports while still keeping it just under the cost of an 80gig PS3 :)

720p is fine. The Playstation 3 doesn't have many native 1080p games anyway so I highly doubt you will notice the difference.

I would get the 80gb for BC, the 40 is just a gimp package to me...but to each their own.

And for a game? Resistance is still my favorite, Uncharted is good, as is Ratchet and Clank. MGS4 is coming though...
