Usually when you hear stories about the PS3 on the local news, it's because somebody got stabbed for one or an old lady got punched in the face over it or something -- kind of depressing really. So we were stoked when we saw GamingTarget's story about a 9-year-old boy who saved his father's life and decided he deserved a PS3 for the heroic act.

According to the news segment, 9-year-old Matty Lovo was able to gain control of a 100,000 pound tractor-trailer after his dad passed out behind the wheel. He used the truck's CB to call for help and a second driver was able to come and bring the truck to a stop. His grateful father was interviewed by the local news agency, and said his son "keeps telling me he thinks he needs his PlayStation 3 now for a reward."

Seems like a pretty reasonable trade -- your son saves your life, you drop 500 dollars (or 600 if you're feeling extra thankful) to get him a PS3. Best part of the story though? When the co-anchor on the news show admits he has no idea how to use his own PS3. Pure Ron Burgundy right there.

I agree with you. That kid should think that his father being alive is reward enough. Greedy S.O.B.

You guys are ridiculous. Kid is 9 years old. What do kids get when they do something good? Rewarded.

You're acting like the kid is old enough to know gratification of saving your dad's life. How many kids thought death of their parents in their teen years? he's not even there yet. Not old enough to comprehend that (usually comes later in life).

Nine years old. "Eat your dinner, do your homework, then you can play." "Wash the dishes and you can go to the movies."

QFT ...

who wouldn't expect a 9 year old kid who wants a PS3 not to ask for it after saving their fathers life ... i mean if the kid wanted it before and he just did somthing so good according to news - though he proberly dosn't fully understand what he did ( come on 9 year old kid - father passes out , the kid's first intinct is to try and get help...) so he believes he might finally get that PS3 becuase of it ...

You know the kid may get his wish (and it won't be from mom or dad). There was a story of a kid a while back that worked very hard to get a PS3 when it was released and in the mean time this kid found out that there was another kid that was faceing a life or death illness that when the first kid got his new PS3 he sent his console to the unfortunite kid.

And after the story was told on a local news program not only did this kid get a PS3 but he got just about anything he wanted or would ever use from a total stranger.

This kid saving dad's life may get his wish and much much more in the long run.

Think about how mature this kid was to do what he did.

Why not? If he's ever going to "deserve" a PS3, now would be the time.

There is Viva Piñata for 360, there are almost no games for kids for the ps3 now, the only one I can think of is R&C and it's not even out yet.

heck, I hope someone buys the kid a ps3 AND a game! it's the dad who should be grateful, even though I'm sure the kid is happy that his dad is still around too.

and to whoever it was who derided the idea that a nine year old would get much out of a ps3, your wrong. i've seen it (nephews). where did you get such an idea?

RFOM for sure, I don't know what else.

A coworker's 9 year old son has an xbox, and xbox 360, a ps2, a ps3, a wii, a psp, and possibly more. and his own hdtv. i have no idea what games he plays, but his dad tells me the kid uses all of his consoles. every time a new cnosole comes out, his dad buys it for him. very spoiled kid.

Personally, I'd shove them into the street and then pull them back right before a truck hit them proclaiming "ha, now we're even!"

Seriously, though, he's rather young and doesn't really know any better. (to him, $500 isn't something that he'll really be able to comprehend.) In the end though, they're even. His father is the reason he was alive to begin with, after all.

but don't you guys think THE DAD would be the most grateful one here? or at least grateful enough to reward the kid. i would in that situation. ... or do you think the dad should just say, look son, I'd get you a ps3 for saving my life, but that would not be nearly as big a reward as you get by having me around, so that's what your reward is ... me. while that might be true, it's awfully conceited and seemingly ungrafeful.

I think it's fine if his dad asked, what can I get for you to repay you? or something like that where the dad actually wants to do something good for his son for it. But if the kid just demands it for saving his life, he's just a little Greedy kid.

I think it's a bit much to call a 9 year old greedy. He probably doesn't even have a full grasp on life and death (frankly he may still think his dog sparky is at a local farm chasing cats, not buried in the backyard) or economics and our monatary system. At nine, what sort of income does he really have? He's relying on his parents to buy the things he wantsfor him still. He's probably running under the simple impression "what i did was good. When I do good things I recieve rewards. This is what I want for my reward." Sure, at our age, we understand the concept of doing the right thing simply for the sake of it. At his age, he doesn't. In a sense, it's kind of cute he would ask for one.

Now, if his father were to decide to get him one as a sort of thank you, I'd have no problem with that. Should he get him one? Well that all falls into each persons concepts of what values do we pass onto our children, and how do we do it.

i know what you're saying, but if you think about it, it probably wouldn't really work like that.

here's what I mean. let's say you're a dad and you have a nine year old son, and you really love him. you couldn't be more proud of your son and you love to spend time with him. you two have a really great relationship and a close bond and he thinks the world of you too. you are his world. now, you pass out at the wheel and he manages some heroics to save your life. how do you think you're going to feel about it? your boy's a hero, you know?

right. k then, what would you want to do? give him a stern lecture about not expecting rewards for good deeds? or are you going to be so proud because he's your beloved nine year old boy who just did something way beyond what anyone would expect a nine year old to manage, and because he did, you still get to be his dad?

so he wants a ps3. right, well he's a nine year old kid, what do you expect? you love him, don't you? you're alive, aren't you? so give it to him anyway because of what he means to you and what he did, and you can still coach him on the finer points of modesty and humility as you continue to live your lives together, something that wouldn't have been possible if he hadn't done what he did.

weird, if anyone doesn't get that.

i agree. just do it out of the good and love of your heart.

so, if someone saves your life, you're going to tell them to go **** themselves?

i'd thank him and give him something if i wanted, but he shouldnt ask for something in return of saving my life.

All kids get 'rewards' for doing stuff. This kid is exactly that a 'kid' and his mindstate is like that too. But getting a ps3 since you saved your fathers life? Kinda low and greedy if you ask me, not diggin it.
