All said here (Q & A) with teaser video.

Looks like we're getting a fourth Sonic game that's actually a direct sequel to Sonic 3 back on the Genesis.

GameSpot: Why did you choose to go with a title like Sonic 4? Does this mean this is a direct sequel to the Genesis games?

Ken Balough: I think one aspect to keep in mind is this game is truly a labor of love. A lot of us grew up on the Sega Genesis console; in fact, I remember vividly the first day I got mine with Revenge of Shinobi and Moonwalker. Ever since Sonic & Knuckles, Sonic the Hedgehog 4 has been a game c l a s s i c Sega fans have always wanted to see. It was the right people, at the right time, getting together and finally making this game we've all wanted to see.

While the game is a brand-new adventure, it will definitely pick up after Sonic & Knuckles. However, what you are looking at is the beginning of a new story arc.

I certainly hope it works out this time. I was a fan from the c l a s s i c age that has pretty much given up on the franchise (not a hardcore one, I did like Sonic Adventure) I'm not sure if I'm "jumping the gun", but I hope Sonic has been revived. The best thing, they're going with 2D this time around.

So, any old folgies around excited about this? Any new fans? What's your take on this once titled "project needlemouse"?

I am extremely excited about this as I have been a Sonic fan since I started gaming, though I don't consider myself an Old Folgy :P A brand new 2D Sonic title cannot possibly be as bad as the decade long 3D Sonic titles. I have high hopes for Sonic 4 and it's a 1st day purchase, it will deliver!

Sonic 2D > Sonic 3D-Hoax-

Sonic Adventure 3 says otherwise :D Though I don't think it will ever see the light of day.

I'd actually like a Sonic Adventure 3 as well as a Sonic the Hedgehog 4. I'm also an old school Genesis player, but I do know that Sonic Adventure 2 got 3D right for Sonic and Shadow levels. They were extremely fun. Especially the last second jumps from rail to rail in the middle of the sky. Something 2D simply can't pull off. (I think) That said, a Sonic 4 is an instant buy for me. New levels and all. Especially since I've milked Sonic 3/Knuckles levels so dry that even now, my instincts know what's coming up and reacts as if I've never stopped playing the games.

I've only ever enjoyed Sonic as a 2D side scroller, I'm so happy they've returned to form.

Well the episode thing means there will be more to come, so lets hope it is good. I will purchase mostly on how much you get for what price.

Probably, as its download, i can see it being like that Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles re-hash that was out a few months ago.

I choose to believe (or hope) that it will be more like Mega Man 9, which actually turned out well.

I'm actually really glad they're doing downloadable episodes instead of trying to get this into a full retail game. I have a feeling it'll be better that way.

Also, I really wish they'd make Sonic Adventure 3. Call me crazy, but Sonic Adventure 2 is my favorite Sonic game of all time.

Ehh, sonic was ok back the the genisis days, but even if they are trying to bring back some of that nostalgia, facts are facts and there is more bad sonic games then good ones. Sonic is one of the many IP's that should be let to die(nothing wrong with retiring something) just like Kirby, Tomb Raider, Starfox, Duke Nukem etc...

Finally Sega is going to get it right (hopefully). nothing beats the 2d sonic games, sonic Adventure did a few things right bringing sonic to 3d but the quality was still notably worse than it's 2d predecessors. can't wait for this release. it's going to be an instant buy for me.

too bad you had to slog through terrible tails, knuckles and their evil counter parts to get to them. thats the main reason I will never finish that game.

I'm just glad Sega have finally gotten round to making Sonic 4. The original Sonic foursome were some of the best 2D Platformers ever made, so I can't wait to see a return to their formula, and in HD! I'll probably get this on PSN, but might get it on WiiWare if cheaper. :P

What was that? Something about Tales/Robotnik/Knuckles/Rogue? Sorry, my mental barriers must have blocked the memories of the levels you speak of. Umm, repression! That's the word I'm experiencing! As far as my memories go, Tails and the others didn't exist. It was only Sonic and Shadow. (In fear that all the bad memories will return)

So the one time they MIGHT make a new Sonic game that doesn't suck, and they're not even gonna release it as a REAL game? Stupid.

megaman 9 says hi

Megaman 9 also says hi to capcom and not sega. That is what makes that difference. Capcom seems to be a company that in the end at least tries to care while Sega barely tries not to fail. I do have some hopes for Sonic 4. But in all honesty all the game needs to be is barely acceptable and it is already 10X better than any sonic game since the Dreamcast.

SA2 had it's pros and cons. Some of the level designs were great. But the cons tend to out weigh the pros. As most of the good things were very, very short. While the bad things were shoved down your throat. That "random Sonic character generator/dispenser" was one of them.

Yea i feel the same way, i want it to be good and its already shaping up to be better than the last 10 years of sonic games, but i just have a feeling sega wont pull through with the goods. And to those comparing it to megaman 9 which was in its original 2D sprite form, Lets not forget though that even though its a new 2d sonic game its not the original 2D or sprites but 2.5D (3D models on a 2D plane) so it probably wont feel or control exactly the same as the originals.
