"It's natural to feel that way, of course it is" - Maguire

As Sony ships its new model PlayStation 3 to stores for launch this Wednesday, UK managing director Ray Maguire has told GamesIndustry.biz that the new sku is a natural evolution and the company always had plans to offer a cheaper product.

But he also admitted that he could understand that PlayStation 3 early adopters might feel cheated for buying the console earlier in the year when it commanded a luxury GBP 425 price point.

"I think it's natural to feel that way, of course it is," said Maguire, in an exclusive interview published today. Read Full Interview >>

What else are they gonna do?... pricedrop is the only sollution.

It´s always a gamble with new technology and i think the consumer are well aware of the possibility of pricedrops... this one is pretty big though so i understand that some people may feel cheated.

I don`t feel annoyed I payed so much.. Mostly due to the fact if Sony don`t act and lower the price (like they finally have) .. the PS3 could follow the same path of the Dreamcast.. (lets hope not!!!!)

I rushed out & bought the 60GB when I found out they're taking out the emotion engine. Big deal, so you can get an 80GB, you can put any size in there you want and as for the price drop... Hey, there's a price to being the coolest kid on the block, aside from two of the consoles of this generation I haven't missed a launch console in quite some time. It took me a year to cave in and buy that domestic console, I probably could have even held out untill fall for the PS3 (Socom fanatic) but aside from those two I am usually lined up for consoles at launchand I rarely feel "ripped off".Knowing that price drops are inevitable, next time wait it out. Actually, I'll let you guys in on a firey hot industry rumor... Approximately a year after $ony launches the PS4, the price will drop significantly, system gets re-bundled withfree software.

$600? Even if it drops to $400, I'd say the $200 I paid was well worth it for 8 months of gaming.

EE? I'm glad my system has the BC chip in it.

60GB? Since I can easily replace my HD without having to pay an outrageous amount for a proprietary HD, I don't really care what further SKUs they offer.

In short, no regrets as an early adopter.

I know you pay more for a console if you buy it early so i don't feel ripped off with the price but i do feel cheated about Sony making alot of false statement saying alot of games will be out for the release date or soon after.

If they managed even a couple of more games in the first 6 months then i wouldn't have felt cheated or if they where just honest about release dates then people wouldn't feel like they have been lied to and cheated.

I dont feel cheated, I have a massive collection of PS2 and PS1 games I still play regular. Backward compatibility means a hell of a lot to me. Without the hassle of setting up another machine, and the virtual mem cards are a blessing..

i feel cheated, f*** BC, for the extra cost you could by a ps2 and 10 games, and it costs little to upgrade to a bigger hard drive when its full, hell im probably gonna have to upgrade my 60 gig anyway so it will cost the same to upgrade hard drive no matter what sku you got.... f*** you sony, you should have released the 40gig sku from the start

The only thing I'm mildly angry about is the fact that my EU launch60GB doesn't have the EE chip, even though it is the most expensive version sold by Sony (because the Dollar is infavourable versus the Euro currently). Still software BC is something I'm willing to pay for even if I had the choice of a cheaper system without it.

I don't feel cheated at all. Besides i really don't care about the size of the harddisk of PS3 since i always have the option of upgrading to a bigger harddrive. So i'm happy with my 60 Gig PS3.

Why should we feel cheated? I wanted the system the first day it came out and I got it. I know over time the system will drop in price sooner or later, but that had no effect on my decision. I wanted the Ps3 and I stood in line to preorder it knopwing that the price had to drop sooner rathher then later. Thats life and I am happy with my 60 gig.

Yeah i feel cheated, so much money spent on a package on release that i could have got a few months later for around 200£+ less and not to mention the fact that my dad got RIPPED on 200£ (or 100£ i cant remember) HDMI cables. :(

yeah I defiantly feel pretty cheated...only bought my system less than 2 weeks ago, got the £425 deal. So basically i've just paid and extra £75 for 2 crappy Blu Ray movies and a HDMI cord I could of 'borrowed' from work

I don't feel cheated either, I've had a lot of fun since I bought my 60GB last December. Who I really feel sorry for are people who shelled out $600 for an iPhone.

I think the people who brought it early and paid more got wat they paid for. Plus I'd rather get a system thats fully powerful not watered down.

I have a 60 gb with BC which I don't use at all, but I don't feel cheated, since the new model will have stuff cut out. So in the end we get what we paid for, thats what i think.

At first I thought I was being cheated by Sony. But after hearing several news about new PS3 models without the EE, I feel blessed with my 60gb with EE.

EE? I'm glad my system has the BC chip in it.

60GB? Since I can easily replace my HD without having to pay an outrageous amount for a proprietary HD, I don't really care what further SKUs they offer.

In short, no regrets as an early adopter.

I don't feel cheated I got 6months of great ps3 gaming and got to play games that I would have overlooked once all those november and 08 games roll out. I paid $600 for the 60gb and it was well worth it to have the best model. I heard in late february that they would start taking out EE and I wanted BC because I have a lot of ps2 games but I never really went back to them after experiencing what next gen had to offer. It's nice to know it is there though. Smart gamers who follow news know that the 60gb is the best and know they can update hdd and the smart gamers, the hardcore sony gamers are the ones who bought the ps3 first, so of course most of us won't feel cheated.

I don't feel cheated at all. I have the EE for Backward compatibility. The 40GB version is for those who complains about the price and that's the majority. Hey, this is what you want, this is what you get. Be glad you're getting a cheaper version.

I like my PS3, I got the 80gb, it doesn't have the EE chip, but plays every PS1 or Ps2 game I've tried so far (except the first Ratchet & Clank) and the number of good games seems to be growing. While I admit I still play my 360 more because I think xboxlive is a more "well rounded" service, and I like achievements, I really don;t like the fact that I already had to buy a new 360 due to hardware failure. In short if Home delivers like it should and were the Ps3 to add achievements, I would buy all PS3 games and only 360 games for exclusives.

How can you feel jipped? I paid $499 on Nov 24th last year only a $100 more than the 40gb PS3 will bethat hasno BC and only 2 USB ports and I have been able to play it 10 months sooner than people who buy the 40gb version. And the people who paid $599 for the 60gbPS3 have a bigger HDD, WiFi, BC, 4 USB ports, and have been able to play it for 10 months.

Us early adopters have paved the way for the future success of the PS3 and we've enjoyed gaming for up to 10 months. Let's give ourselves a hand and praise ourselves for the future successes that will surely come with gaming. Enjoy!!
