MS made the 360 controllers the new standard for PC gaming, it achieved that PC developers had especific compatibility and pre-defined configurations made especific to the 360 controller. Some games even had built-in the 360 icons buttons in tutorials and messages displays.
Sony could have made the same, it not only had the best technologic for PC compability since used the widespread Blutooth standard. All controllers were wireless with optional mini-usb-->usb cable which made easy connecting to PC wirelles or wired. It had build-in battery, something very rare for almost any wireless controller. It was the most used familiar controller to fans in 2007, since most gamers were already accustumed with the ps2/ps1 controller that were the standard for even many PC controllers.
If sony had marketed the PS3 controllers as a all-in-one controller for use in everything like MS did, and had made official drivers (a necessity for 64-bit) many non-ps3 users would have bought the controller for the PC. Especially since the Dualshock shape was so familiar as the modern controller everybody was accustumed to it.
I for one, had a ps3, but since I couln't use the DS3 on my 64bit PC I bought a 360 controllers even withouth having a 360, only for especific PC use. Sony lack of official drivers made their competition get my money.
And the fact is, now I become more and more familiar with the 360 controller, and now since I already have a 360 controller I know that if I eventually bought a 360, I wouldn't need to buy a second controller, making this a compelling argument for me to decide to buy the 360 as a second home console.
But Sony is lacking foresight.
The same thing can be sad for the Ps3-eye, which I find hard to find full compatibility, especially for the ps3eye microphone, of the blutooth headset wich is such a great headset everybody should be using if weren't for Sony not seing the potential their acessories could reach if sold for another market. The compatibility the headset has with cellphones is another oportunity sony misses.
They still have the conservative mind that their acessories should be used for the Ps3 only, losing oportunity and money for this.
