Sony had an insanely long press conference yesterday but in nearly two hours of announcement and demos, the company never once mentioned its new Surround Sound System for the PlayStation.

Launching this fall and dubbed Surround Sound System for the PlayStation 3, the system will cost $199/€199. Providing virtual Dolby or DTS surround across a 2.1-channel system, Electronista reports that the the all-in-one speaker includes a Night Mode to cut down on audio passing through the room but can put out up to 30W of sustained bass and 10W for each stereo channel. Connectivity comes via an optical audio input or an analog audio input for devices like the PSP.

these things usually don't sound anywhere near as good as a full fledged speaker setup no ears-on impressions anywhere.

better than having to listen to tv speaker i suppose seems decently priced imo.

Price seems fair, although for just a little more, you can go much better. I've been looking into getting a surround sound system myself. I doubt this will be the one to make me part with my cash, but I guess I'll just wait for some hardware reviews or something.

if your someone who plays games alone most of the time like me, its probably wiser to just pick a decent pair of headphons, at least then you won't have to find the sweet spot in your room.

That's a good idea, but I play local multiplayer games a lot and use my PS3 to play movies fairly often too. I have a 52" HDTV without any sort of external sound outputs, so I think it would be appropriate in my situation to invest in something a little extra for my ears. ;)

Neat but I think my 3 year old surround speakers will still be better. :)

This speaker proves to be the perfect if you don't wanna spend a whole bunch of money on speakers and a receiver. But if your looking for something like this I'd suggest checking out these links. http://www.amazon.com/Logitech-Z-2300-THX-Certified-Speaker-Subwoofer/dp/B0002SQ2P2/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1276835081&sr=1-3 http://www.amazon.com/Logitech-THX-Certified-Digital-Surround-Speaker/dp/B0002WPSBC/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1276835133&sr=1-3

The price of these sound bars is ridiculous. $200 for a 50 watt system... Nah! For the same price I could get a real surround sound setup. Or just go with some computer speakers. Which is what I use.

Eh... looks gimmicky. $199 is a bit pricey for only 2.1 channel. 7.1, maybe, but not 2.1.
