Sony: Copying others 'the worst thing we could do'

After Microsoft claimed that the introduction of Xbox Live avatars was a much fresher approach than the competition, Sony said Wednesday that Home is on track and trying to copy others is not its plan for the PlayStation 3.
"I don't know enough about Microsoft's avatars. I think we're going in a bit of a different direction with Home. We made a line in the sand and made a strategic decision on Home and that's where we're going," said SCEA president Jack Tretton.

"My understanding is that it's a more simplified vision. That may be enough for some and not enough for others. We are who we are. You have to be who you are. You can't backpedal down a road if it doesn't appear it's going to plan. You have to be aware of what's not resounding with people."

"We've got a plan for PS3. I think the worst thing we could do is look at the competition and try and do what they're doing," he said.

avatars and the like have been around years, long before ps3, 360 and wii.

Yea Nintendo copied MS originally on motion sensors also.

Even though we asked for it, they still copied. Yes gamerpoints existed way long before microsoft unified it, but that's what sony is copying the unification of achievements/gamerpoints/Trophies/entitlements/whateveryouwannacallitpointgivingsystem.

I'm not saying it is bad. You gotta look at your competition once in a while to see if they are doing something that your company can take and improve.

Well Sony announced home, MS announced Avatars. Sony announced being able to put trophies in your "home". Where do you think the trophies will come from? It's not copying, it's marketing. People want these features and Sony is just supplying the demand. MS saw the hype over Mii's and HOME and what did they do? Hell, they even changed their GUI. So it's not hypocritical for someone to release a similar idea. But how can people complain about the DS controllers? One of the best controllers I have ever used, and it predicessors have won several awards for best controller. Why change the controller when it was everyones favorite? If Sony didn't "Copy" the DS controller(from who?) they wouldn't have a great controller. Don't blame them for improving it lol.

And idn't MS getting motion conrollers? Now thats a rip isn't it? lol.

I agree. Copying is usually a lame game. I have the bowling game from the Playstation Store and I wish it weren't motion control. I hate that Sony put motion control in their controllers. patriots7672

I am sorry 360 fans but that whole thing the 360 is doing is a direct copy of code from wii.

I mean usually they try to change it up a bit but Microsoft was like forget that we are going to do the exact same thing.

Did yall hear G4 talk to the president of microsoft about the new look. The G4 people said well mr. president it seems that your whole e3 presentation was responses to what your competitors are doing. yall really didnt bring anything new to the table.

And the president of microsoft said well it is not like that we are just making things better... his face was so red.... and the G4 people knew that they made them feel bad so they backtracked and said " but dont get us wrong that whole xbox live thing started a trend too."
