"Sony, by appointment by the above Blu-ray Disc Association Board of Directors as the Blu-ray Disc License Entity is responsible for Blu-ray Disc Information Agreement (IA) and Blu-ray Disc License Agreement."

Sony doesn't own the rights. Sony is administrator of the licensing program. The Blu-Ray Disc Association owns all rights.

i think the same because ....c'mon  Pioneer, Philips, Thomson, LG Electronics, Hitachi, Sharp or Samsung easy can sell the license of blu ray but they dont do it ...maybe because sony is majority holder ..and boss of the project

They just helped develop it. But I believe Sony does hold the marketing rights..so thats why, when you see Blu-Ray you see the Sony logo not too far from there..

So that means if MS starts using Blu-Ray for future projects they will have to pay Sony royalties huh?

I'm fairly certain it was Sony/Philips who invented the CD as well. CDs have only lasted hmm 20 years? I'm comfortable that they know what they're doing with Blu-ray.

No they didn't, IBM did. It's also Floppy Diskette with a "k" not a "c", "Disc" came into common use with "Compact Disc".

http://computer.howstuffworks.com/floppy-disk-drive1.htm

Sony was the first to introduce 3.5" disks, but diskette storage was around long before Sony's entry into the computer market.

As for Blu-ray, like others said, there is a large association but the development and patents lie with Sony and Philips.

Man oh man, people love spreading incorrect information. Panasonic is one of many brands used by Japanese giant Matsushita not Sony. Other Matsushita brands include Technics and Quasar and some others.
