This is NOT a bashing thread. I can't wait until I get a ps3, but does anyone know if sony not redesigning their controller has anything to do with already having manufacturing facilities for the ps2 controller? It would be costly to have to build a new manufactureing plant just for a new controller you know? But I've tried to figure this out and its really bugging me. I can understand why they would keep the old design, but I'm wondering if it had more to do with costs rather than innovation. Sorry if its a sucky topic.

PlayStation joystick for me is good design, its comfortable to use while using it, that model brings safety on hands while playing, and that form is take from human hands scape, i think, that is why Sony not yet do redesign to Playstation joystick model, before many comments come saying that joystick is not comfortable while using it... :)

If the Wii didn't announce it's motion sensing capabilities we would ALL be playing with a smaller more aerodynamically designed controller right now and be the better for it. This controller was anounced and the pics we shown to the public. Once Nintendo announced the Wii remotes, Sony decided to make a 11th hour change to it's unit and add a gyro/motion sensing apparatus to it's controller. But the newly designed smaller controllers could not house the blue tooth and the motion sensing units, so up against it's Nov 2007 release date and unable to redesign a new controller to incorporate the motion sensing they had no choice but to go back to the larger original design that has been around for 12 years. And really you can tell the Sixaxis was a last minute hack-job, no rumble and pretty lame motion sensing capabilities. The fixed the rumble, but the motion sensing is still crap for the most part (not that the Wii is several orders better, but it is better). Maybe for PS4 we'll get a proper redesign that will be better designed and will offer blue tooth, rumble and some kind of motion tracking UV positional motion tracking.

By this logic Sony should have stopped at the PS1 and never bothered with the PS2 and PS3. The PS1 was great and it had great games that are still great today, but where would current gaming be without Blu-ray and the Cell processor and online gaming and so many other advancements that have brought the true next gen experience. It's really kinda short minded to think that the PS3 controller cannot be improved upon. Nintendo certainly didn't subscribe to this logic, and you can see the benefits that has brought them. The current PS3 controller design WILL NOT go into the PS4, it simply cannot compete with what will be coming to gaming in the next few years. They will evolve it and hopefully bring a whole new superior experience that will leave us wondering how we ever got along with the PS3 controller. I actually wouldn't be surprised if they redesign the controller within the PS3's life cycle.

Good question..   My first instinct is to say "If it an't broke don't fix it"...

But then I think what could be done to improve the controller?,  thinking about it its a nice optimum design..  I guess I do have one or two spare fingers that could be used

Although personaly I'd rather see new technologies for controll built into games..

e.g. When I'm flying in warhawk.. If I shout out "Flare!" the plane should automaticly deploy it..

Still I bet Apple would design a great joystick!! lol..

The controller is fine. If Sony can improve the controller, I don't mind. What I don't is some gimmick crap of a design that is rushed because people are whining for a new design.

If you remember, they changed the controller when the PS3 was first revealed. It was the one that looked like a boomerang. But everyone complained and wanted the old design back and that's what they got. I don't see Sony making any major changes to the Dual Shock 4, just some minor improvements.

The look is a trademark and to be honest I like it this way because we playstation gamers got used to it. However, people who actually got their hands-on the boomerang controller early 2006 said that the controller wasn't really comfortable at all so I guess Sony had to take the comfort in consideration and not just the design. They did right.

I don't think costs would have stopped them. All they would have to do is rework the machines within the factories, not build all new plants.

Anyway, I think that the DS is an icon that people associate with PlayStation. Just like people associate rediculously large controlllers with XBOX. But IMO the DS is the best controller design since the SNES.

If you really want a boomerang style controller, I'm sure you could find a way to mod your DS.

They original six axis controllers didn't have rumble because Sony initially did not have a contract in place with Immersion (company that provdes rumble features).  After complaints, and after the fact that Sony got some sort of deal with Immersion (read: having to cough up money they didn't origianlly want to) then rumble came back and we got the DS3.  Controller wasn't really rushed.  They intially wanted the boomerang controller, but through focus groups it waa turned down.  And also the bluetooth and such technology couldn't fit properly.

when they introduced the boomerang people were like wtf is that ugly thing, it is kinda ugly, but the current one is no stunner either, and when you think about it the boomerang controller is much, much more comfortable and actually gives you a better gaming experince, like i had an experince with the triggers on the six axis/dual shock 3, they aren't place very well, playing devil may cry 4 with nero, you have to press L2 alot of times and after a while your hand starts to hurt. I think that the bommerang contoller has a more relaxed feeling since there is a more natural grip since your wrists are sort of just in a more natrual position than the current one so pressing the shoulder buttons would be much better. at least we still have a good d-pad.

in terms of asthetics the xbox 360 contoller is smoother and curvier but in the end its just looks like a blob.

and to answer your question, people are afraid of change, they fear the unknown, this is the root of most of the world's problems, and fanboyism.

The PS3 controller is based on a perfect controller which had proven itself for years and years already...

The only reason i would prefer the 360 controller is because of it's weight (I find the ps3 controller a little light, especially when playing PS3 after two weeks of non-stop Fable II) and the PS-button is not so well placed, or at least not well mapped... confusion galore with non experienced players who need to hit start and the most obvious start button is the big round one in the middle... makes sense right?

Why mess with perfection? Honestly, the DualShock is the best controller ever (though the SNES controller comes close). It feels right, the button placements are good, and it works comfortably for pretty much any genre. The way a controller should be.

Same thing I was thinking, the DualShock is the best controller ever, and does work well on any genre, personally I could've done without the trigger addition though, they should've kept it the L2 + R2 buttons, it looses efficiency there, and if I want a trigger, I'll buy a light-gun.

The Dualshock has always been the best controller, so changing it would be dumb. Remember the boomerang? :P One thing has changed, and that is the L2 and R2 buttons which are a bit more like triggers. They're a bit more confortable.

^exactly. if it ain't broke no need for a redesign. Too many people want the dualshock to be the 360 controller. Not saying that is what the TC wants but that is mainly why people are complaining about the design.

There is a big difference between innovation and redesign. Redesign is normally ment for when something wasn't done right the first time or there were improvements needed.

just out of curiosity, those of you who praise the ps3 dualshock controller, have you ever used the 360 controller (for more than just a few minutes)?

i absolutely can't stand the ps3 controller, and i used to love it when it was the dualshock for ps1.  i will never buy an FPS for ps3 if it's available on 360 purely because i think the 360's controller feels so much more natural.

the position where the dual analogs are and trigger buttons on each controller make all the difference.  when you hold the 360 controller, your thumbs don't have to stretch at all, they just rest in the proper location.  the ps3 positions your thumbs too far from the rest of your hand and i find it uncomfortable to use in many games.  i have big hands and, for me, the 360 wins hands down. no pun intended.

Whats funny is I've heard that people who actually got to try out the redesigned "boomerang" prototype controller said it was actually better than the Dual Shock. The amazing backlash from fans all from just seeing the controller is what kept the dual shock design. If it was more comfortable or more practical Sony should have stuck to their guns and put it out. Sony seems to have that problem, no gonads.
