Way back before the PS3 even came out, I recall a Sony exec (Harrison?) stating that this generation, Sony would be focusing its energies on developing first party Intellectual Property and focusing less on retaining third party exclusives. This may have been damage control for the fact that Kutaragi was slow securing exclusive titles, but I think it's rather clear that third party exclusives for Playstation will be fewer and further between during this generation. So I suggest this: If it's not developed by a Sony owned development house, just assume it's going multi-platform. This means your SquareEnix, Konami, Capcom, Vivendi, Ubisoft, and maybe even Insomniac games. Just pretend they're all going multi-platform, so you will be happier if they stay exclusive and less bummed if they don't. Hope for the best, but prepare for the worst. You'll still have Lair, Drake's, Heavenly Sword, LBP, and whatever else Sony has cooking to keep you warm and fuzzy inside.

could be. but that's the same winning stradegy that lost Nintendo the lion's share of the console gaming space. remember the N64? that was their idea of "focusing on 1st party"...which ultimately meant alienating the 3rd party devs that were always so important to their overall success. I can't for the life of me figure out why they'd let franchises that have grown up with PlayStation move to other consoles. it hurts my rationale for buying a PS3. If all the same games are available for both systems and one is $200 less, what sense does it make to get the more expensive system? I need Sony to put as much time and energy into cultivating and showing appreciation to their 3rd party devs as they do their 1st and 2nd party devs. color me concerned.

The focus is all about winning the bluray/ hd dvd format. Games are a second thought for now with sony. It's time we all realized this.

You are absolutely right.

The thing that will drive the ps3 are the first party titles and marketing of them and just about every third party game important to the ps2 is still coming to the ps3. Other third parties will want to develop on the ps3 to maximize their sales once the userbase gets a little bigger. Sony may even cut some deals for certain games or decide to pick them up to publish them along the way. Maybe a few of them will choose to be exclusive to get more attention for their game.(it happens). It really is going to be a nice combination of games.

What will put them in a good position also is that they usually have a good eye for upcoming talent and are not afraid to take risks on innovative or offbeat games.

Another thing I would like to add , they probably will adjust the price to compete when they really need to and as it stands right now the 360 is just as expensive because they charge for online gaming and it doesn't have any extras that the ps3 has which pretty much kills any price advantage. With online gaming growing , just about every ps3 owner will probably want to get online at some point to play something on there right and they can do it for free.

Even if they adjusted the price MS would lower theres which means MS and nintendo would be the same price and sony will still be much higher. You have to understand that sony is losing nearly $300 per console sold for sony adds up fast, 1M consoles sold = $300M in loses. Until component prices drop for sony lowering the cost wouldn't be a good financial move as far as their bottom line is concerned.

well this is a drop of bad news for PS3 owners(i have nothing against you) but perhaps this means that the xbox 360 will finally get some truly great Role Playing Games.

Just my opinion

You also seem to forget that Sony is a hardware company and manufacturing prices come down rather quickly. Also don't forget the ps2 and its sales from hardware , games , and accessories will help them make a lot of money to make up for losses on the ps3 hardware. PS3 games and everything on the network will also help them make money.

So it only appears that they can't do this or that , but in reality they will have more room to adjust than people think they do.

It already has some that are upcoming like Mass Effect & Lost Odyssey. SE's main market is Japan so a 360 release is unlikely. WKS is first or second party so that's out of the picture.

Sony is more focused on wining the format battle between BLUE-RAY and HD-DVD it doesn't care about the games because I don't think they are going their best in keeping 3rd party games exclusive. None of the 1st party games interest me so if other games go muti-platform I'll go for the other console I'm not interested in the other features the PS3, I'm only interested about the GAMES.

i've said this in other threads as well. Sony cannot secure exclusives until their user base grows large enough. lets face it, right now, the 360 is the more attractive system to make a game for, because currently, its user base is far larger. by the end of this year, the ps3's user base will probably be big enough to secure exclusives, and we may even steal some (lets not forget that we already have). sony has some strong first/second party games coming out, but i think even sony knows that they cannot compete with first/second party IP's alone. in time, they will start securing them, though.

The word exclusives doesn’t really matter anymore, with the cost sky rocketing it makes good business sense to go multi-platform for game developers. I'm pleased to see 360 finally getting some top RPGs, that’s one of the main reasons I drop the 360 for the PS3 this Friday. The PS3 is always going to have more RPGs then 360 because of the Japan factor. As for SquareEnix release its main FF games on other platform, it ant going to happen, cos Sony owns a large share of SquareEnix. I think we might see FF game being released 12/18months down the line on other platforms but not on day one.
