US and Japan ps3 has a Emotion Engine/Graphics Synthesiser chip to emulate ps2 games on the ps3.

European PS3 loses the Emotion Engine and now depend more on software to emulate ps2 games on the ps3.

So now there will be a new supported ps2 game list available on the European PS3 launch.

European folks are not happy.

Well forgive me. It's hard to read up on the lastest news, when the forum is filled with a lot of childish and weak posts.

After such a long wait and find out your ps3 is not as same as everyone else, the EU consumers has the right to be mad.

However, BC is not as important as the actual ps3 games.

I agree, sony is not going make a lot friends in europe. They have two choices. Take it or leave it.

I'm sure all the best games like MGS/FF/God of War will be playable. I sold my PS2, and with it all of my games. I'm sick of PS2 anyway, I've played every game a million times over and over again. PS3 games is why I get a PS3!! Besides, all the great PS2 games will get sequals on the PS3.

As long as the most important games are useable there's no reason for them to complain and they will undoubtedly release new updates to make the compatability list grow, Also concidering the launch list for europe is like 100x better than the US and japan launch they really should just shut up.

Why is it boring? Is it not something that should be mentioned. Lets see, how to put it..........."Sony charges us more, makes us wait longer and then downgrades the f****** hardware". Woaw, hooray for Sony and their crap!

You must be another Sony drone.

I just don't get it...

Sony told the WHOLE WORLD that they would be making BC via software emulation a long time ago. They included the EE+GS into PS3 because emulation wasn't complete.

That has a good part and a bad one: The good? Almost 100% Compatibility. The bad? Some features can not be implemented (like "game upscaling") because the Cell+RSX are not doing this work, only showing the final result.

Now Sony is trying to put the emulator that SHOULD have been integrated into the first PS3's... They may not have as many compatible titles right now but.. THIS IS SOFTWARE!!! So They can update this via firmware and make it better... With time.

Some time in the future, PS3 will lost the "Graphic Sinthetizer" and all emulation will be done via Cell+RSX, and all the "fixes" would be integrated into the firmware update.

Whay I don't understand is that so many people seem to be "shocked" because Sony is doing what they told a centrury ago thet would be doing. And I don't understand why so many people don't see THE BENEFITS that this will do into PS3's emulation FUTURE.

Just take the PSP as an example... What you have RIGHT NOW is almost imposible to compare with PSP's original firmware. They have updated the little thing with so many options that I don't think I could imagine what will Sony do with the PS3 OS in one or two years.

What we should be doing is "waiting to see" what will happen, not attacking Sony withouot FULLY KNOWING what is the result of this.

as time goes on the BC will matter less and less until only brand new gamers to the world of gaming in general and people who are sentimental for one or two games that they played and want to relieve some of those old experiances even give a damn or just want the option to be there even though they rarely if ever take advantage.

other than that the hundreds of other games will still be forgotten/overlooked/unliked and not matter at all. Buy a next gen console for next gen type games. People expressed how it's a waste to buy a system without complete BC but I've noticed it being more of a waste if you only buy a next gen console for playing games from the last gen.

I agree 100% with what you have posted I'm in the UK and yes at first i was P'd off but that was before i did some checking i even emailed Sony Europe and got a replay explaining  what they are actualy doing it it's just as you say, the way people are acting it's as if  Sony have stopped it altogther they haven't they have just changed the way it works Yes it means at first there might not be as many games that work but they will be adding them via firmware updates.. This hasn't stopped me from cancelling my pre-order i will get my PS3 on the 23rd and enjoy every moment of it. oh if you want to know what Sony Europe told me here's their reply to my email.

Thank you for your recent e-mail regarding PlayStation 3 which has been
forwarded to myself at our Head Office.

I was sorry to learn of your disappointment regarding PlayStation 3's
backwards compatibility which was announced in a press release on Friday.
I would like to take this opportunity to assure you that we are working to
ensure that as many PlayStation 2 titles are compatible with PlayStation 3
as possible.  To this end, we have been assessing the extent of backwards
compatibility, and will continue to do so right up until the European
launch. At this stage it is not possible to provide a specific number of
backwards compatible titles, however, as from the 23rd March a list of
compatible titles will be available at http://faq.eu.playstation.com/bc.

With respect to your opinions regarding the treatment of European
consumers, I would advise that the PlayStation 3 launching in Europe is a
very similar specification to those currently available in North America
and Japan.  The main difference between the European model of PlayStation 3
and those available in other territories is that the ability to play
PlayStation 2 software will be handled with dedicated software rather than
hardware.  This gives us much more flexibility with how these titles are
managed and updated.  Original PlayStation titles remain backwards
compatible and, as outlined above, we will continue to assess the
compatibility of PlayStation 2 up to and beyond the European launch.  In
addition, we will be issuing regular firmware upgrades for PlayStation 3 to
increase the number of titles that are compatible.

I hope that this goes someway to explain our position on this matter.
Should you have any further queries please do not hesitate to contact me
directly.

Best regards,

Andy Barnes

You honestly believe that Motorstorm won't look any better than anything on the PS2? What PS2 game looks better than Resistance or Formula 1?

By the sounds of that, you are equating looking better with graphics.

Personally, I'd rather play Formula One 05 than CE, TimeSplitters 2 than Resistance and Gran Turismo 3 than Motorstorm.

Have you played Resistance?  I love the TimeSplitters but Resistance is just crazy fun, especially with 40 man deathamtatches.  I wouldn't even compare GT3 with Motorstorm.  I'd definitely compare it to GTHD and would prefer GTHD not just from the visuals but the engine has been tweaked, not to mention the new drift engine.
