How?

Gamestop IS the used games market. They have deep pockets and would find some way to bully Sony or any company that tries that. They could simply refuse to carry their products, imagine the lost revenue for Sony.

In reality, I doubt Sony will actually use this tech. Probably just safeguarding themselves. Lots of these patents get awarded and are never used. It's common with big companies. It would be suicidal for any next gen system to do this, look at the backlash removing Linux caused.

We own two PS3's and two Xbox's, if my family cant use the games we buy, whats the point??...but we all know they dont care..My feeling Sony has been trending toward a hateful relationship with gamers.

We already severely limit our purchases due to ports not working, downloads and installs taking days, server issues, etc.. This isnt going to get me to spend more money..

Gamestop wil just replace shelves of games with download cards in a case so there is something tangible to buy.. But sales will shrink dramatically due to no used games or trade in towards purcahses..

I've been a loyal sony fan since i can remember. I had all ps systems including psps and ps vita. But if sony is really doing this then I guess i'll be looking at other systems. Or maybe even stick to this gen. The truth is that sony is clearly not doing well with business. This is a really really bad call.

well.............. out of my 30+ games I have on my PS3 only 2 of them were used and I think I only borrowed one game ever (it was that crappy Prince of Persia game, I hated it). So I wont really mind it. Yeah I know there is the whole "my friends" and "what if" this and "what if that", whatever really.... None of my friends have PS3s and gaming to me has always been a private matter. The last time anyone came over to play games with me was in the days of the N64.

Remember how people said that Blu-Ray was going to have a part of it that got etched and locked the disc to a system back when the PS3 came out? This is just more rumors, I'll pay attention when a source with some credibility has something to say.

Some times the logic behind getting a patent is to ensure that OTHER people can't who would possibly use it. I don't think there's anything here to get excited about until there's something to get excited about. This type of move isn't unheard of in lots of different industries.

I agree. IMO the inclusion of such "counter-measures" on a console will a) force the savvy consumer to look elsewhere and b) increase the amount of piracy on said console.

I purchase all of my games new too so the inability to buy pre-owned games isn't a factor for me personally either. However, being deprived of the ability to resell that which I've purchased and no longer require most certainly is.

Main downside for me is that certain games are just impossible to find brand new sometimes.....for a reasonable price.

like one guy said in the comments, what if my system breaks? Then what?

not a good idea to me. I think they should continue to do block part of the game content for used games that have online.

Terrencec06

"Also, for example, a content key may be supplied to the reproduction device 130 and the encrypted game AP may be decrypted using the content key only if the reproduction device ID matches a legitimate use device ID. Hence, use of game APs bought and sold in the second-hand market can be eliminated."

In other words it would work exactly like an online pass, meaning games would be attached to your account, not console.

Surely the disc would just be tied to your account, not a specific console.

Either way, this is bad and Sony should feel bad. Doubt they are stupid enough to implement this tech in PS4, though. I wouldn't worry about it.

I used to mostly buy used games but nowadays, the new games have been getting such great deals so I pretty much stick with buying new games.

The thing that really stinks is that there are plenty of games which I didn't like or simply hated so I sold them on ebay. I would hate to have a bunch of coasters laying around because I got stuck with some bad games/simply overplayed games without any option to sell them.

Would it stop me from buying PS4? No, but it would make me even more hesitant on which games I choose to drop $65 on.

I hardly doubt this will become reality, big companies always patent numerous technologies without ever seeing light of day. However, if this would actually happen it won't stop me from purchasing next generation PlayStation simple because over 95% of my games were bought new with majority when the price dropped down. I choose very wisely which game I spend 60$ on and that usually means maybe 2-4 games a year.

Those expenses are rare but for a fantastic game, I won't hesitate to buy it in first month of the release.

This....x1000. There's nothing new to see people, it just a PATENT not an IMPLEMENTATION of that said patent. As MethodManFTW pointed out this is just standard business practice, there is no definitive proof it will come to fruition or not, until a 'physical' system is created and Sony officially states they've put such technology into it. In other words: it's just words on a piece of paper. It's nothing for people to jump to conclusions about yet.....of course, I know that will more than likely fall on deaf ears w/ some Chicken Littles out there. :|

Of course, this also counts for me too. So if something 'should' happen it's not really a biggie to me b/c I don't buy used that often. Now I don't know what that will to in terms of my GF subscription but I'll figure out how to cross that bridge, should it ever get to that point.

If Sony stops used games, then I will not buy their console and to kick them in the balls even harder, I will stop buying all Sony products. So no TVs, no stereos, no nothing.

HMMM the PS3 is a region locked, used game locked, nondedicated server, nonrooted UI, Internet capped, Operating system locked, nonbackwards compatible Game System. Oh wait??? Wasnt that what Sony advertised the PS3 was capable of doing? IF the PS4 has any of this it will be even more of a joke then the PS3.

Xbox 720 here I come. H_M_1

ok, if you are buying downloadable games, you know the drill, you can have your account setup on five different ps3s and you will be able to play the game on any of those systems with a different user account... up until recently (at least in my knowledge) there was no way of resetting the user accounts other than physically deactivating your account on the ps3, which blew since if you got a clod, there was no way of deactivating the system... i was affected quite badly because of it, since i did not know this when i bought my first ps3, which had a lens problem and was replaced, where i lost one of my five privileges with it, the second one got ylod... i learned that i had to deactivate the system after i turned in the loaner, when i received a refurbished ps3, which got ylod after 11 months of use... i was down to one allowed use of my account, when i decided to give away the refurbished old ps3 and buy a new slim ps3, which had only came out a couple of weeks prior to the incident... luckily it never died on me, but since i had to live at two places for work and had two ps3, it was a chore... well, about a couple of months ago i found out that you can deactivate all of the activated system via web based psn and i did that, everything works out perfectly... i know it has been a long post but, imho, having a game registered to your account is not the end of the world and i reckon it provides more chances to the aaa game developers to survive in a shifting economy, where the industry is leaning towards the casual gamer, who is more interested in games like farmville rather than dishonored or batman or skyrim or any aaa game... btw i would buy all of my games in downloadable format if i can, since they all show up in my account and i can re-download them whenever i want...

LOL......thinking Sony or Microsoft will be bullied by GS.

i can't imagine that they would actually do this, unless both xbox 720 and ps4 are gonna implement this. if they do i hope they atleast like reduce the price of new games or something. i got hitman absolution for $30 the other day so maybe games are getting cheaper? i usually buy new anyway but still, i do end up selling a lot of the games that i either finish with or just don't like.

All it will take is one battle in court to demolish Sony's theft practices. According to the law the people have the right to buy and sell freely in the free market . Any attempt Sony makes to use viruses to cause property damage to a persons legally purchased games is illegal and the victim can sue in court for destruction of property and/ or conversion ( meaning Sony has illegally confiscated the game to convert it to it's own use against the law) which is what this software is. Also they should know I won't buy any more of their systems or games ever if they use this technology. It's high time the laws caught up to the digital media era and started reigning in the unfair practices of media companies. This is a good example of why.

I'm pretty sure, technically, with games, you buy a license to use the software, ala Microsoft Office, etc.

Actually I buy the game with a license but the license can be deemed what is called "bad faith" if the court finds the agreement in bad faith it's null and void and the court already has ruled purchasers own the instance of the game/media and it is in fact no longer the property of the manufacturer, therefore, any virus used to block it's use is an illegal attack on the legal property of the owner of that instance of the game.

If they work out all of the kinks to the system, and if this is part of a planned movement toward a the predominantly download-centric gaming future, and if that's handled properly, then I wouldn't have any issues with blocking used games. Ultimately, I think they need to make games more affordable. Specifically, through non-transferable digital downloads. It's great that we're getting Day 1 digital downloads of new releases, but it's insane that they still cost as much as physical disc copies. If I'm going to pay the same price, clearly the smarter option is to buy the physical copy, beat the game, and as soon as I feel I no longer want to play it ever again, trade it or sell it for at least half of what I paid and then roll them into my next purchase. On the other hand, if I could buy the digital copy at an impressive discount - say, $40 rather than $60 for a disc copy - then there's a little more incentive there to buy the digital download and sacrifice the option for trading/selling my copy. And, to be honest, that in turn might prompt me to play the game past its expected lifespan, possibly even picking up DLC that's released months after the game's release. Because, why not? I still own the game. Maybe I haven't played it in a while, but I can't trade or sell it, and the DLC might give me the motivation to revisit the game. Also, once games have clearly outlived their lifespan, it's time to mark them down. It's insane that the PSN store sells digital copies of older games - like the Ratchet and Clank, Jak & Daxter, and Metal Gear Solid games - for the same price, if not more than, physical copies. There's zero incentive to purchase those, when I can buy the physical copies for the same price or less and then still recoop some of that money by trading/selling them. If a physical copy would cost me $15-$20, then they need to sell the digital versions for $5-$10. Ideally, I think $7.50 is a fair price. Even if the game is garbage, I don't feel completely cheated buying the game for the same price of a cup of coffee and a sandwich, you know? If Sony can make the Playstation Store the equivalent of Steam, but then take it that next step further, where digital games - including Day 1 new releases - are just so stupidly cheap that it just makes more sense to buy downloads than physical copies, then I think blocking used games becomes less of an issue. But if this is purely an issue of greed, of Sony trying to bleed consumers for every last penny, then this move will be the death of Sony in console gaming.

This is great news if it actually happens. It means the PS4 will be hacked much quicker than the PS3 since there's good reason to do it.

I wouldn't have a problem with this but most games aren't produced for very long and tracking down new copies can be a hassle! Touts on Ebay would have a field day with this as after a few years the games would be impossible to find and the only way to get a new copy would be at ridiculous rates on Ebay. This would be a very bad move for the industry, taking away used games doesn't make all these people run out and buy new. Reason people buy used is because they dont have the cash to buy new and simply removing the second hand market wont put money in these peoples hands. Sony and publishers wont care because they ain't making money from it but its hurting the retailers who sell the sealed copies and their consoles in the first place!

If a physical copy would cost me $15-$20, then they need to sell the digital versions for $5-$10. thedarklinglord

NEVER gonna happen, not on any APPRECIABLE timeline, anyway... Look, gamers let the vampires into the house already, there's no stuffing this genie back in the bottle... Too many folks have paid into the current price structures, too many people are USED to paying $60 for a new game no matter the format, too many people are content to be lazy and not go out and SHOP for what they buy when it can be delivered right to their HDD (thank you iTunes, for ruining audio quality of the average collection whilst increasing prices & sloathful behaviors exponentially, now that the hook has been set!) so Sony (and M$), and their various licensee companies, will continue to ask for top-dollar/euro/shekel/etc., - Thinking it will ever change now that they've got a certain cross-section accustomed to the bleeding, is patently absurd.

They're getting away with it ALREADY. Why change ANYTHING??? Don't be silly...

Just because you and I don't buy, that doesn't stop the sheeple out there from doing it, and praising them all the while.

;)

If Sony were to do this it is like punishing people. What wrong if I want to lend my PS4 game to a friend? No PS4 game rentals? Finally if your PS4 gets RROD, YLOD, Or DRE and you need a replacement console. Then your whole game collection won't run on the new console.

This would backfire on Sony. The first Sony computer entertain flop on PS4 the 8th Generations version of Lair, or Haze. Not allowing the customer to return a bad game.

Another experiment if Sony tries it will be very bad for Bussiness.

I do not think this patent will permenantly block used games. Instead of charging $10 for online usage for used products, Sony will probably allow users of second hand products to be fully playable at a price. Instead of unlocking the online content for $10, people will just unlock the entire game for $10.

If Sony implements this into the PS4, I will not be buying it regardless of what other features may exist. To me, this is a HUGE strike against the PS4. I play co-op games with my nephew (LittleBigPlanet, Modnation Racers, Playstation All Stars, etc...). So if I got a PS4 lets say and I buy LBP3, only one of us can play it even though we both share our accounts on one playstation? What if I invite a friend over to play the new Madden game or what not? He can't play it cause it'll lock him out. Or he would be stuck with as a guest. What if my friend wants to lend me a copy of the next final fantasy game? I cannot play it or try it out even? I just feel like there have to be better alternatives than this. If this practice is in full effect on PS4, I simply will not buy or support them. Sony is punishing their consumer with this move. The way to stop piracy is to cater to your customers and not bend them over the rail. I grunt about games wanting you to buy online passes if buy used, but I can sort of understand where they are coming from. I can deal with it. This act though is unacceptable. Find a different alternative
