Does anyone know if Sony plans on releasing PS3 that obtains the backward compatability to play PS2 games?

I'm in the market for PS3, but I don't want to keep my PS2 around anymore....

Any word on how PS4 will handle backward compatability? Are they going to try to be smart about it like Xbox....?

last I checked the xbox 360 couldn't play a handful of my xbox games thats main reason I went with a PS3 over it. I think two that I can think of off the top of my head was Otogi, I loved those games.

But they got "Games On Demand" which carries last gen and this gen games. Love the service..and not getting a particular console because of no backwards compatibility is kinda silly! People just don't know how to move on..

I too am waiting for either a backward compatible PS3 or for SOny to release PS2 games on a download service. I don't think it's silly at all. If someone is strictly a sports gamer, I can see that. Sports games, for the most part, only get better with new systems. How many people would go back and play Madden 07 on Playstation 2 if they have Madden 10 on PS3? But some games do not have equivalent sequel. Games such as: Star Wars Battlefront do not have a sequel on PS3. Many would say just buy Call of Duty or Bad Company. It's not the same. For one, the setting is different. ALso you cannot set up a battle with bots on any of the PS3 FPS games and play split screen with a friend. Another example would be RPG fans. I know Final Fantasy always has a sequel, but still not the same experience. Many are unhappy with 13 due to not being able to visit towns, etc.

I would say the Backwards compatibility is No longer. Playstation 4 will not have it. Nor will they ever bring it back on PS3. I wish that Sony would release the "Last Chance for PS3 Backward Compatibility edition" PS3 Bundle with Two Controllers, HDMI Cables, A headset, Two Pack in Games, and a $20.00 PSN card. For $600.00 Which is what the legendary 60 Giger originally cost.

As much as I would want that. It is not going to happen.

There was a new story about Sony filing a Patent for emulating PS2 Emotion Engine in the PS3. Basically like running a Virtual PS2.I believe this might be coming soon, the Cell has more than enough power to run a Virtual PS2 while running the PS3. I am thinking that it could be a E3 announcement, but who knows. It will I think potentially open some flood gates to increased saled if is was backward compatible.

http://www.kotaku.com.au/2009/06/sony-patents-method-to-emulate-ps2-on-ps3/

and if you want to read more, search for "sony patent PS2"

Hope this helps.

Thanks
Michael

Same here. It's crazy how Sony isn't trying to make the Ps3 backwards compatible. Forcing people to keep thier ps2's in order to play the games.

How long does the ps2 have left anyway will this be the last year before they stop making games for it.

I don't know but Ps2's are still selling pretty well though. PsOne lasted around 11 years. Ps2 gots 10 so far.

If more companies could just remastered their game franchises from the PS2 era, like the God of War Collection. They could possible add trophy support, make their games at 60 FPS, and in HD on a single blu-ray disc, then I don't care about backwards compatible anymore.

IT IS INSANE. We're not using floppy drives or game cartridges now are we? We're using disks. I can play Windows 95 games on Vista thats to Microsoft being smart enough to have OS compatibility features. It's not perfect, but at least they have it in. Third party software emulators fills in the gaps. This is why I wish more games came out for PC rather than just consoles...

Emulators allow you to use disks:P (considering that's the only way anyways..)

Yea, I really wish the PS3 had it. I really wanted to play San Andreas the other day, but I didn't want to drag out the old PS2.

It will never happen, because sony will be re-releasing them on PSN, so you can buy them all again hence the b/c emulator. As greedy as it is, i know ill be buying some ;)

They have not announced any plans for BC on new PS3 consoles, but if you are wondering about PS4, I would almost certainly say it will either be BC with PS2 (and hopefully PS3) or (more likely option in my opinion), have them donwloadable on the store. You will see all the games DL except for PS3 I would bet.

I might as well buy another Ps2 then just incase, i still have the original PsOne & the mini-one. Most people prefer having hard copies but yet it's nice that you can play it on the current gen. systems. it's quite sad really thogh, having to rebuy a game you already own.

why would i want to "move on" when old games are still just as fun to play as new games. I don't want 4 or 5 consoles clogging up my living room
