Sony has said that one of their two focuses at E3 this year will center on one straightforward goal: putting more PS3s in homes. Of course, we figured the recent price drop would create a spike in sales, but we had no idea the response would be quite this big, or quite this immediate. Clearly, a lot of gamers have been waiting for this price drop, because it almost seems like the second launch of the PS3. Over at Amazon, the PS3 is the hottest thing out there: the machine started climbing up the site's top-selling list within hours of the confirmed price drop, and as of now, it has hit #1. This new position means the PS3 is now up 2800% in sales! With E3 this week, a huge lineup of games for the fall and winter, and a suddenly more interested group of consumers, the PS3 is certainly in the best position of its short life so far. On sunday we had 11 units in stock where I work, next day.....all gone.
The percentage gain is a meaningless value, and I'll tell you why.
Those massive percentage gains are taken from Amazon's Movers and Shakers list: http://www.amazon.com/gp/movers-and-shakers/videogames
Unfortunately, those massive percentages are actually much less meaningful than what you believe. I'll let Amazon explain it to you for me:
The Movers & Shakers index identifies, by category, the biggest gainers in sales rank at Amazon.com in the past 24 hours. For example, suppose a music item has a sales rank of 10 today, but was ranked as low as 30 yesterday. Its Movers & Shakers increase would be 200 percent.
So basically, the PS3 was ranked at #33 twenty-four hours ago, but today it jumped up to #1. 33 divided by 1 is 33 = 3200%.
Let's take another example: Resistance Fall of Man, which had a 356% gain in the last 24 hours. It was #73 yesterday, and it's at #16 today. 73 divided by 16 is 4.56 = 356%.
Remember:
100% = 2x
200% = 3x
300% = 4x
400% = 5x
So on and so forth.
So can we stop with all the damn "PS3 rises by 3200%!" sales threads? They're absolutely meaningless. The FragFX controller is #3 on the "Movers and Shakers" list with a posted 1,465% sales gain, too, but I somehow doubt that it's selling better than the PS3 Wireless Controller, which is #7 with a 333% sales gain.
Yes, the PS3 is #1, and THAT is what you should be focusing on. The percentage gain on the Movers and Shakers list is a worthless value.
LOL.... 2800% eh?
i thought nothing could go over 100%L33T5T3R
I laughed so much at your comment i cried. This is a prime example of someone thinking they are smarter than someone else, then screwing up :D.
Example,
if 1 ps3 is sold a day, if it increased by 2800% then 28 ps3s are sold a day :P
That is stll a massive sales hike you dumbassquiksilver022
Yes it is, but the 2800% number is meaningless.
It is a 16.7% drop that is pretty significant........
The other side is that the price drop has been rumored for months - which was really bad for Sony. I think it made the PS3 look way worse than it would have been if they came out and said NO pricedrop. However, they couldn't do that since they were coming with a pricedrop..............

Hmm lets see my topic says 2800% the fact isthe ps3 is selling much better now. Im not sure why your here or why your trying to teach use economics but the bottom line is that 2800% is alot. Heres and example if amazon was selling 1000 a day now its sell 29,000 and in no way is that small. im not sure what the actual sales numbers are but as you can see its still a major increase.

Read through my post. It's not about economics, it's about informing you that your 2800% figure does NOT represent an actual sales increase. It ONLY represents an increase in sales RANK. Meaning, it went from #29 to #1. THAT is what the 2800% figure means. The actual unit sales are not up by 2800%; the PS3 is NOT selling 28 times faster just because of a $100 price drop.

Well i can tell your not an idiot and i kow your right but think about this amazon sells thousands mabey millions of things each day and to be able to climb the ranks to number 1 within 24 hours is pretty impressive and if you looked at other items that are ranked high you can see that the majority of them all are ps3 accessories and games.[QUOTE="Killzall"][QUOTE="mjarantilla"]The percentage gain is a meaningless value, and I'll tell you why.

People around here don't have a lot of common sense. Thinking that the PS3 is all of a sudden somehow selling 28 consoles for every 1 it was selling before is ridiculous. Of course there has been a spike in sales but NOT 2800%.
