Crash Bandicoot is a pretty interesting IP. In order to make a game in that series successful you'd have to
1. make a game that feels like the original 3 without being "dated" somehow. I don't know how well that makes sense.
2. have pretty graphics
3. If they utilize sixaxis, don't overuse it. Make the motion feel natural not forced.
4. I think the game would be cool if the game had multiple paths.
5. no overworld.
6. small checkpoints during the levels and larger checkpoints at the start/end of each level.
7. The scenery of each level would be constantly changing throughout the progression of the level to match that of the upcoming level so it would feel like a seamless trasition. Like you were actually traveling all over the world.
8. Set up a buffer so that loading would be done in the background so that if possible, you could play the game straight through with the action never stopping.
9. Bosses with character and a story that intelligently ties everything together rather than throwing things in haphazardly because the dev thinks they're funny, giving you 3 lines of backstory and calling it a day.
