If they re-released the 20 gb, they could slap a small price on it and it would appeal to casuals. Nobody wants to shell out $400, or even $500 for this new 160 gb. Agree?rsoxguy12
Why do people not realize that its not the harddrive space which is so expensive ... the hdd's are not very costly to sony, especially cuz they buy in bulk. Also 20Gb laptop hard drives aren't made anymore, and neither are the 40 and 60 gb hard drives, the smallest sized widely manufactured laptop hard drive is the 80gb, thats the reason sony uses it. To get a company to manufacture a 20Gb hard drive just for the ps3 would cost sony probably just as much money as buying the 80gb, while its widely produced. That's why the 20/40/60 gb models aren't made any more. This is just the nature of technology.
The price in general needs to be reduced, I agree, but I assume if Sony could have afforded it, they would have done it by now. I'm sure there will eventually be one, when the time is right for sony. In the meantime people need to stop posting these countless 'sony needs to make a ps3 with only 20gb and sell it for less' thread, sure people can complain about the price, but its not the HDD which is so expensive, and nor is it cheaper to make a HDD smaller than 80GB right now.
Eventually the 80GB is gonna go too, probably not for a while but eventually when manufacturers stop mass producing it and move to a higher one, the ps3 will too.
20 gb ps3 with all the features of a 40gig for $300 would help Sony alot this holiday seasonavataraang1or just get the 80gb down to $300. It would sell extremely well at that price. It sells well for being a $400-500 machine. Hell I am not at all ashamed that I bought my 60gb when it was still $600.

You, sir, have just won the post of the day award. Congrats to you.
Sadly, many people post threads about Sony being able to lower the cost of the PS3 by re-releasing the 20gb PS3 without having any knowledge of the situation. Putting a 20gb HDD in the PS3 would actually be more costly to Sony than putting an 80gb HDD or 160gb HDD in the PS3, yet people don't seem to know that.
People, 20gb HDDs are not widely manufactured any more. That is the main reason why lower HDD SKUs are going away. For Sony to include such a small, hardly (if ever) manufactured HDD in the PS3 would be more costly to Sony, and in the end, more costly to the consumer.
The PS3 isn't that expensive. I still feel like I got a bargin on my 60 gig system even at $600.00.jimm895So you would pay $80 for a cheeseburger? Also, keep in mind that before this generation, every console that has ever released for greater than $400 MSRP has failed in the market. Neo Geo (and CD), 3DO, CD-i, et al. With that type of history, Sony was out of its mind daring to even have a SKU for $500, much less $600 at launch. With that in mind, manufacturing costs for the various components should be damned cheap by now. Especially with all the manufacturing process shrinks. So why the hell are they still selling us the neutered models in the market?

u hit it spot on!
and besides, if you can affort to get a PS3, i think its safe to assume, you can afford to shell out a little extra for more space, also the 20gbs sucked so bad a friend of mine had it, and he sold it after a week lol to buy the 60gb.
urrr....you do realise if they did the hard drive is probably one of the cheapest parts on it...blu-ray and all that stuff is expensive. even if they did release it there wouldnt be that much of a substancial differencelewisg1212hmm they could also chuck out Wifi as I dont think the 20gb had wifi, so that could make it a fair bit cheaper, they could sell it at like 300-350 which is what they should have done leading into xmas

While the hard drive sizes (20 GB, 60 GB, etc.) refer to the hard disk, a better way to think of them is that they're labels for the various models. Hard disks are so cheap...shrinking them isn't going to cause a significant impact on the price. They have to remove more from the PS3 and the more they remove, the more it hurts us -- yes, us who already own a PS3. Why? Because developers create games for the lowest denominator. If Sony lowers the denominator, then yes, more people can buy it, but the games won't be as powerful. i.e., older PS3s have 4 USB ports, now they only have 2 -- that means any game made might use 4 USB ports, but developers can no longer assume that...they assume you have 2.
Would be annoying if some game is released and it says "For the PS3 (60 and 80 GB models only)". It is for this reason why I gave up on PC gaming...no more reading the packages about the OS version, video card, sound card, etc. If it says "PS3", then my system can play it.
Sony has run a business far longer than even Microsoft -- since the 1940s. I think they know what they're doing...
The PS3 would get a much needed boost in sales if they rereleased the 20GB cause all you would have to do is gut the drive and upgrade and have something with a larger HDD than the 160 GB at a much cheaper price.

Agree?rsoxguy12the reason Sony and MS released consoles with bigger hard drives is because hardly anyone makes 20 and 40gb hard drive anymore, so because the demand is so low it costs Sony and MS more to buy those and only makes sense to spend a few more $ to double or triple the size of the hard drive space
