The violation is with the "synchronized parallel processing with shared memory," PPC has stated that Sony is causing some "irreparable harm and monetary damage" to their company, which is why they are seeking compensation for damages plus interest, PPC also wants to see the impounding and destruction of all PS3 consoles that infringe on this patent.

What do you guys think of this issue?

Sounds kinna silly... how is Sony causing these damages to their company anyway? well w/e it will take forever to get through the US legal system (given how awesome it is and all). By that time PS4 will be out =P

So it is true what they say American's can sue anybody for nothing, and it is funny how most of the companies that sued Sony are from Texas.

Uh, yeah, the people sueing Sony are based out of Newport Beach.

Blame Californians. They're the ones who started this trend--Yes, I do see the irony here as a Californian.

So...what, they want all PS3's to be destroyed? Even mine? They expect me to send my PS3 to them for it to be sledgehammer'd? (yes I'm overreacting).

Crazy douchebags. They can't seriously want all PS3's to be destroyed, what court would allow that?

If they even touch my PS3...I will make sure they die a painful death. I am going to put a shotgun right beside my gaming couch...and if my doorbell rings I'm taking it with me,

there is no way they should win. Sony was a co-developer of"Cell". this company should have to sue more then just Sony to win, imo.

It would be Sony, IBM, Toshiba. I await for the trio to rain firey brimstone upon them in a fashion that will bring a tear to my eye, haha I'm exaggerating. This company won't win, if you look and someone pointed out on the gamespot news portion of this that they are part of a company that is notorious for extortion of smaller businesses in order to gain their money.

Yeah hahaha, that part cracked me up quite a bit. If they want to pull that, they better get ready to pay me some major cash or be ready to walk away with a permanent limp. :D

If they win we will all go on strike or whatever to keep our Ps3s at our own homes. And if that doesn't work, then we will start an angry mob and go destroy stuff.

Check out this article: http://arstechnica.com/news.ars/post/20070731-15-year-old-parallel-processing-patent-threatens-sony-ps3.html

It gives you a better look at what is actually going on here. The company is literally a group of lawyers thatbought the rights for this technology, created a corporation that is connected with parallel processing, and then started looking for people to sue (Sony) so they could make a quick buck. Welcome to our broken-ass system.

Judging from what I read on the patent, I think Sony has a possibility of losing this lawsuit, however the demand to destroy (and cease manufacturing of) Sony Playstation 3s won't happen. Either the judge will throw out that demand, or Sony will find a way to work out a deal to keep it from happening.

To be honest, (and I'm still reading the patent information specifically) I find it hard to find a way to get out of this legally, unless the parent company (the smaller one operating over IPMI) decides to drop the case.

The reason they all sue from Texas is because of the county they sue Sony in Texas. The county they sue them in has had a history where the Plantiff wins over 70% of the time when dealing with patent cases. I forgot where I read it. It was the company who was sueing Sony earlier this year who took them to that same county court.

This is actually quite scary...

Here's the patent in question.

If the judicial read on the patent is very broad and Sony lost, it will not be just because of Cell processor which is made by IBM. Any and all firmware and/or hardware relating to the manufacturer of a parallel processing system, because the shared memory can be read as broad as system memory, or as limited as local cache.

Either way, Sony's loss would mean that Intel, AMD/ATI, nVidia, Sun Micro, Apple, Dell, Gateway, HP, Acer, and last but not the least IBM, would soon find themselves under similar lawsuit from the firm (a quick glance on the web indicates that Parallel Processing Corp. is actually a collation of patent lawyers creating the company for the solo purpose of suing, implying Sony is just the step stone for the bigger fishes.)

While I agree this patent is indeed vary valuable, I am afraid the success of this lawsuit would not stop at just Sony and the thought of the firm possibly winning chills me.
