This is actually quite scary...
Here's the patent in question.
If the judicial read on the patent is very broad and Sony lost, it will not be just because of Cell processor which is made by IBM. Any and all firmware and/or hardware relating to the manufacturer of a parallel processing system, because the shared memory can be read as broad as system memory, or as limited as local cache.
Either way, Sony's loss would mean that Intel, AMD/ATI, nVidia, Sun Micro, Apple, Dell, Gateway, HP, Acer, and last but not the least IBM, would soon find themselves under similar lawsuit from the firm (a quick glance on the web indicates that Parallel Processing Corp. is actually a collation of patent lawyers creating the company for the solo purpose of suing, implying Sony is just the step stone for the bigger fishes.)
While I agree this patent is indeed vary valuable, I am afraid the success of this lawsuit would not stop at just Sony and the thought of the firm possibly winning chills me.
