In the coming months, Sony is quietly preparing a big investment to expand the company itself to challenge the rival of Apple.Inc. According to Chief Executive Howard Stringer, they are planning to use it's state of the art PlayStation 3 and its PlayStation Portable videogaming machine, along with their line up of Bravia high-definition TV's, to process such a challenge to let users download TV shows and movies. Just like Apple, letting people download music and videos from their iTunes Store for people's iPods.

Here's an idea.

Why doesnt Sony use that big investment and invest it in the making of some new games?

Because that would be easy, would please many people, and would make sense. Those are only some of the reasons why they shouldn't.

Making new games isn't easy, that's why there are so few among many bad ones.

Sony is referred to as the 3rd largest developer/publisher in the world. They have studios all over the world, and when a promising studio comes along such as Ninja Theory or Guerilla, they make a large investment into these devs and give them free reign. It makes no sense to dump a ton of money for the likes of GTA when its going to be on the console anyways, and even if they secure an exclusive, it will likely be a timed exclusive. Sony as a whole has secured game studios, movie studios, music studios and has threads thruought all kinds of industry. Its not they've been sitting around like poor Bettys while MS acquires everything.

Well, I don't know about everything...but Sony is a much bigger company than just videogames. Granted, I would like to see them focus on investing as much as possible into the gaming industry, but they have all kinds of pieces of the electronic industry that they're busy with. It's a lot different than dealing with a company like Nintendo.

haven't you people heard of not putting all of your eggs in 1 basket. let them diversify, even if it doesn't stray far from the mainproduct. they have enough to publish for new games, and theyhave: Uncharted, HS, Lair, Infamous, R&C, Folklore, LilBP, etc. That's already more than any other 1st party publisher.

they're a corporation in a capitalist society, let them expand as much as they want. right or wrong, they have the right

oh man... I am so for this concept up until they mention the requirement of their own TV sets. You can tell that they're basically going to do their own version of HDCP... I'm sorry, I have an amazing 1080p 42 inch Westinghouse with HDCP built in. If Sony desides to go proprietary on this they're going to lose out huge. How many people are going to buy a tv from sony just so they can download content.

Maybe because there are plenty in development already, and they're trying to gain more revenue with additional services. My god! Isn't that crazy? A multi-billion dollar company trying to expand their product offerings. That's just unheard of.

And until Sony loses that attitude the PS3 will always get the 360's sloppy seconds! Who benefits from Sony being "loyal" or expecting it in return..give me a break people, at least Micro$oft makes an effort to.. A) Make as much money as possible (which is business model for any company) AND B) Pass that on to their 360 users who enjoy a wealth of good games. LOL..I can't believe people still defend Sony's LACK of effort and LACK of being aggressive to get their PS3 user-base some half decent games...I could careless about loyalty..if it takes a company to buy exclusives or whatever etc. why should I care? It's their frickin money..and us gamers benefit from it greatly..at least 360 owners do! Just my thought on this issue. I really don't think Sony has a chance at going against Microsoft or Apple in all honesty..they just dropped their own music download service because if was a failure.

Because it's called Sony Computer Entertainment NOT Sony Gaming Company. Sony is in the business of making money not satisfying fanboys, if digital media distribution is quickly becoming one of the biggest growing sources of revenue then Sony wants in on the bandwagon. Keep in mind Sony owns three major film studios as well as music distribution groups if the Playstation brand can help Sony distribute their digital music and films then thats what they will do.

Thats why people other than you get paid the big bucks to run Sony.

It's called cross marketing, by doing so they sell unrelated game product to a market of gamers. It'll be a new option ... one which you don't HAVE to use yet still can if you want to. Personnally i'm not a tv watcher but if i can download it undefinately i'd be willing to buy some.

Granted you guys want more games, but hell i looked at xbox 360 last year and they had the same amount o games we have on ps3. Also i looked at the Wii and its not shinier ... out 35 they have now around 15 of those were gcube games remade for the wii O_o.

And i'd also like to point out that there STILL A S***LOAD OF PS2 games coming onlike xbox games which were terminated 3 months after the 360 launch (and if you bought an xbox games like nfscarbon on the xbox it didnt work on the 360 which is not the case if you have the chipset on your ps3) and the Cube games 1 month after the wii launch .......

Anyway, i've plenty of gaming to do with the 17 games i bought in the last 2 month (only finished 4 of those so far O_o the others are not even unsealed).

The reason itunes is a success is because of the ipod. They are able to carry their music with them. Since neither the PS3 or PSP are trully "just music players", the whole music store thing may not work as well. However, they should take advantage of the fact that both do other things and have more features (can't think of any specifics at the moment)

Exactly

Anybody remember how much money their putting into Killzone?! Sony's got tons of games in development, many coming out this year or early next year. They've got the games coming. Now they're trying to refine the other aspects of the PS3 to make it an entertainment powerhouse. It's an entertainment system, not just a game machine. If you're just worried about games and don't want your system to do anything else go buy one of those Atari 20 in 1 game systems, plug them into a 13" tv and play games to your hearts content. As long as you stop complaining about it to us.

yea I agree, they should focus on the PSN istead of challenging Apple. Also they should focus on making games more exclusive. Overall the ps3 should be their main focus.

Stupid Sony. Instead of focusing on games, they are wasting their money on Bravia, movie studios, and music studios. /end sarcasm. Maybe its because Sony was highly diversified wy before Playstation came along.
