So I didn't know about this nor have I heard talk about it on the forums. My 20gb PS3 recently YLOD'd. I went the PS official website to fill out a service form. After I filled it out, they asked me if instead of paying $150 to get it fixed, i pay $120 to get a new 120GB slim. Makes no sense but I decided to go for it anyway even though I'm losing out on the PS2 bc.

It's pretty generous of them especially since my warranty expired a LONG time ago.

Yeah, I posted this because I figured people may want to know about this before they do what you did. :( Another caution for people is that they won't take in your PS3 for repairs/trade if you remove the warranty sticker EVEN AFTER IT'S EXPIRED.

Yeah, that's true. I saw a video of how they fix the YLOD due to some chip getting fried. It cost them like $60 including tools to fix it. But I wonder though if the YLOD had anything to do with the 7200RPM HDD I put in it some time ago...

No problem. I believe that this deal is for a limited time only. This may have something to do with Sony recently announcing that they are phasing out the 120GB model as the newer models are coming in.

My 60GB died 3 months ago and they were offering a similar deal at $150/$180. I was of the understanding no matter which you chose you were receiving a refurb unit.

Its not very often...rare actually. The gaming community is just big. Since release I think only 1 in 100 ps3s have ylod. In comparison a release box generated about 40 in 100 rrods. Id say anything under 5 percent is acceptable failure rate.

How many of the DIY solutions have lasted? Insured 3 day shipping or better to and from + parts cost + labor cost + 90 day warranty for $150? Not bad in my book.

You're not buying a refurb, you're paying for repair. The SLIM is the most efficient and coolest running of the PS3 models. That doesn't make it invulnerable to the odd defect.

It's actually not a refurb after further research. They have been tested a bit before being sent out. So though I guess it's not technically new, it's not technically refurbished either as nothing was fixed. When people do the service over the phone, they ask if it's new and they don't really get a straight answer. However, if asked if it's a used/refurb that they are getting, it is a definite no. So it's kinda like buying a TV that's on display at a store except not as extensively used as a show room model.

A defect that apparently started as a result of them using the cheapest POS thermal compound possible.

yes it is ion fact. they should build a system that does not wear out in 3 years time, not for what they are chargeing. sad that people are so brand loyal that they defend a product that does not last.

Nice assumption and slick delivery in using the fanboy label. I've owned every system made since the Atari, Colecovision, Comodore days (sans Neo Geo). Guess what...they break. I don't know if you realize this or not but at the time Sony launched the PS3 the price of a stand alone bluray player and good PC graphics card were well more than the asking price for a PS3. Heck I've paid $450 for just a graphics card that ended up kicking the bucket in under 3 years. Btw, I've never bothered to personally rank them but your favorite game of all time is also high up on my list.

If you wanted wireless, there's a myriad of wireless bridges sold and available, including wireless "n" now; once setup, just turn it on and plug the ps3 in... or if you got multiple devices, get a $20 switch or something. Bigger hard drive? you can get a 250 or 320gig for half of what you paid for that neutered model you have. Largest that physically fits a ps3 now is 640GB, and hopefully we'll see 750 and finally 1TB drives in a small enough form factor to fit in the ps3 as well. But you lost the ability to install and run Linux, which meant loss of access to even more games and usability for the console. And you also lost BC to be able to play what you did already have. Which Sony will assure you never get back. Congratulations...? :|

Geez, you are really trying to fight this? I don't know why you are trying so hard to convince me. Install OS feature was taken out with the new update no matter what PS3 model you owned so it wouldn't have mattered. Plus, the newer models have better/energy efficient parts and I don't want to take a higher risk of having to go through this process again. What I'm getting now is sufficient. All those other things you want me to buy just add on to another $30. I have a PC coming in tomorrow which I've spent enough on already. And I already answered the PS2 situation so no point to make there.

Thats great if its good enough for you, but for some of us its not. Now personally the ony way I would have a slim is if I got it for free. I prefer the original fats becasue I use every single feature on them. I am still running 3.15 so i still have my Linux install, i use the cards readers, i use all 4 USB ports plus I have a USB hub etc etc.. and thats on top of the 4 PC's and laptop i have in my place on both my networks.

They finally got my PS3. I checked my service status and they told me that I needed to call them. Turns out that they needed me to send it in with the old HDD instead. They were about to send it back but I just told them to charge the extra $30 so they did and will be sending me a different 20GB model along with my 100GB HDD and the disc that was stuck inside. I'm just glad I'm getting a PS3 back.

I would take this offer if my nice shiny fat PS3 breaks. Yeah I would also miss my PS2 BC because I don't even have a PS2 anymore and I'll miss the piano black glossy finish that matches my TV.

I'm not sure but I think the Slim they will give you will be a refurbished one instead of a brand new one.

Answer me this: How often do PS3's experience general hardware failure?

Just take a look on ebay for ps3s-any Phat model and it'll open your eyes to just how big a problem it is!

i didnt know you could do that. I have a 40gb and its really low on memory and i like the slim. Mine works beautifully, I wonder if i can trade in or is it cheaper to buy a new hardrive?

It's not a trade-in deal. It's repair related.

Mine got the YLOD for the 2nd time in 6 months and they said it's $200 more or we won't fix it. Asked them about the slim trade in and they said "You're model doesn't qualify." 80GB Backwards compatible.

Thanks, Sony.
