In an upcoming television interview, Sony CEO Howard Stringer indicates that his company's greatest mistake with the PS3 may have been the luxurious nature of the console.

"Wii is a wonderful device, but has a different target audience. If we fail, it is because we positioned PS3 as the Mercedes of the video game field. PS3 is after a different audience and it can be whatever it wants -- a home server, game device, even a computer."

I can't argue that analogy. What he is saying is that the PS3 is overpriced. Most people won't spend 40k for a mid size car and most people won't pay $600 for a game system. Hopefully in saying this he is also admitting a price drop is very important, soon.

Mercedes is more glamorous the PS3.  There's stuff inside the PS3 that make it worth the $600.  The Mercedes is expensive because it's a European car.  The PS3 is a lexus not a mercedes.

Hah yield, you will yield! A mercedes dosen't take long to turn on the engine. Why does Motorstorm? Seriously Sony better release a patch if they want any hope of casuals picking up this game. First off the game is hard enough as it is, having to wait to get back into the action is no fun at all. This isn't Playstation 1. It's Playstation 3. Get with the program dammit!

He absolutely did not say that the Playstation 3 was overpriced. He said that they developed and marketed it as the "luxury" model home console. He then pointed to its increased functionality, as if to say "here's your luxury, here's what you're paying for." Luxury, he thinks, may be its downfall, but it is not overpriced by any means. It is worth its value and then some, as has been proven time and again.

It seems to me that if Stringer and all the cry babies had their way Sony wouldn't of spent all that money developing the CELL processor, they wouldn't have put a Blu-Ray drive in the PS3 and maybe the standard version wouldn't have a HDD. Basically we'd have a minor upgrade over last gen., basically a 360 painted black with a PS3 logo on it....

Everyone wants a awesome powerful console but they don't want to pay for it... People need to remember the old saying you get what you pay for. I gladly paid $600 for the 60GB model and I'll never regret it cause I understand all the awesome technology in the PS3 is worth the price.

there was an interview in gamesindustry.biz with Karraker i think it was

"we could have just made a Ps2 1.5 and played it safe with minor upgrades.  But sony as a company has always been about taking risks and pushing the industry further"

I for one am dead certain I wouldnt have bought a Ps3 if it was just marginally better than the ps2.

Yeah, but unlike the mercedes....PS3 can have a couple of price drops over the years and watch everyone wanting a mercedes when it gets a comfortable price for them...

Yeah well I wish this Karraker guy was the CEO of Sony instead of Stinger. I've read a handful of Stringer interviews and it just seems to me that he wishes the PS3 was more profitable and had a price tag that would make all the whiners out there happy. I don't think He cares how great a console it is just as long as it sells and makes money. As it stands right know Sony loses somewhere between $200 to $300 on each PS3 and I don't think that sits well with Stringer.

Then there's the constant backlash by all the cry babies over the PS3's price tag. Makes me wounder if all this will mean Stringer will have more of a say on how the next Playstation will be built and 5 or 6 years from now we will just get a PS3 1.5 that costs the "standard" $299.99... Will that make the whiners happy? I know it wont make me happy....

I can understand what he is saying. Like the automobile industry. The Xbox 360 is a Corvette Z06. And the PS3 is a Ferrari F430. The Z06 is known to be a Ferrari killer, but once you drive a Ferrari and sit in a Ferrari. You know what your paying for. Corvette maybe "faster" but its a plastic interiors ugly leather but a big engine. Ferrari is top notch on everything. Its like when you say "i have a Ferrari" or "I have a Chevrolet????" I feel its like that. I think ps3 is an acquired taste.

The only reason y the PS3 is so expensive is because of the Blu Ray. I have nothing against Blu Ray, In The future the PS3 games will be wonderful because of the Disc compacity but they could have done wat there doing for blue dragon on Xbox 360 and put tha game on 3 discs.

Read the quote....

If we fail, it is because we positioned PS3 as the Mercedes of the video game field.

He's not calling it a Mercedes as a compliment.   He's saying they bloated the console - put too much into it and made it too expensive for most people's taste.

of course the PS3 costs more than the competitors... it's the best console of them all with the most expensive components... clear and simple there's no magic and fairy tales in this business

Actually, he is using it as a compliment. Merecedes are known for higher performance and quality at a higher expense and that's exactly what the PS3 is. This was probably in response to some stupid "What if" question that the interviewer asked about due to the "slow" sales in the US.
