I didn't ever have a ps2 and my first sony system has been the ps3. I've heard many people say that last gen was the greatest. What games made it so great?

A simple google search would tell you.

Anyway, here's my list:

Final Fantasy X and XII, Jak 3 (and the whole Jak series), Shadow of the Colossus, God of War I and II, Kingdom Hearts I and II, GTA: San Andreas (also Vice City), Persona 3 and 4, Resident Evil 4, DMC 3, Hitman series, Onimusha series, Prince of Persia series, Drakengard series, Psi-Ops, NFS: Underground, Underground 2 and Most Wanted, Project Snowblind, Splinter Cell series, MGS series, Silent Hill series, Xenosaga series.

It really just comes down to the sheer volume of games, that were available! I mean there were so many diverse games[unlike now], (i.e. JRPG's, Puzzle, Party, Action, Adventure, Racing, Fighting, etc...) and the PS2 was at the heart of it!! Any games mentioned in reference to what made last gen great, are solely opinions. There wasn't a single title that definitely made last gen great, it was more a collection of games! The user above me posted some great ones, GOW I & II, Xenosaga Series, Shadow Of Colossus, NFS: Most Wanted, Onimusha! I'll note a few as well: Okami Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne Resident Evil: Code Veronica X Tekken Tag Tournament Dynasty Warriors 3 Star Ocean: Until The End Of Time Devil May Cry Tekken 5 King Of Fighters 2000/2001 Devil Kings That's just a few, if you really want to know why? get a PS2 (their cheap now, as are certain games) and experience the greatness for yourself!

A simple search could show you that, but it was basically the sheer quality and quantity of games, as well as the many titles that revolutionized gaming (GTA III, Halo, Half-Life 2, Silent Hill 2, Resident Evil 4, etc.)

What made the last-gen great was lack of DLC, and patching. You knew that when a game was shipped, it either worked or it didn't, which made devs work a little harder to get it right before pressing to disc.

What made the last generation of gaming so great was the ridiculous glut of games. The PS2 had just an obscene library of games to choose from, across all genres, and so, so many of them were extraordinary experiences unlike anything we'd had in previous generations. And even though the XBox didn't get a fair shake, it pretty much single-handedly ushered in the era of FPS games on consoles with Halo, a game that really was as close to perfection as will ever be released.
