I know this isn't directly answering your question, but something for your consideration maybe. If you're looking for the best sound for your PS3 you'll want to run the PS3 through an audio receiver and use a nice set of speakers in addition to that. As far as receivers are concerned I personally prefer harman/kardon, I own an AVR 347 myself and really enjoy it. It is fairly easy to setup and doesn't alienate beginners, in fact one of the neater features is its ability to automatically setup your speakers. Normally to get the best possible sound for a home theater setup you'd want to calibrate your speakers for your exact listening location, things like delay, power level, etc. The 347 includes a mic you plug in and move to where you set and it automatically does this for you.
As far as speakers for a setup like this, again assuming your looking for better quality, I'd lean towards Klipsch or Paradigm. While I haven't had any experience with the latter I have owned Klipsch for some time and I've been pretty happy. There are tons of models available, the best choice would depend on your listening environment and room size.
Even if all of this is a little more than what you're looking to get into right away it's something you should be keeping in the back of your mind as you upgrade your home theater setup.

Is it better to run the optical directly from the PS3 rather than PS3 HDMI > TV > Speakers (via TV optical out) ? I figured this would be the best set-up (for me at least) so I can get surround sound from my sattelite receiver as well as the Ps3 from the TV. (Waiting for everything to arrive :D)
