yeah the max payne bullet time thing (f.e.a.r's slo-mo was good too) worked well and could be a legit alternative.
it often just smacks of lazy game dev to me. shadow of mordor's ending springs to mind which reduced the epic, climatic boss battle you'd been building to for most of the game to a handful of quick timer events. it's easier to pull some shit like that rather than put real thought and creativity in. dishonored 2 managed to deliver the story in a beautiful and cinematic way without the need for them. games like bioshock and half life 2 did too. it is possible.
there should be some kind of checklist all devs have to go through before using them - does the use of them here really add to the immersion and impact of this scene? are they contextual i.e. the pattern of input reflects the action on screen? do they feel natural? are you saying there are no other mechanics the game can leverage to deliver this moment? if the answer to all these is yes then it's acceptable. just. but otherwise they should be seen as a gaming anti-pattern.
the ones i've encountered so far in spiderman haven't felt necessary (the enemy-grabs-you-so-pummel-a-button-to-escape thing has been absolutely done to death in gaming). i also saw a worrying amount of mini games rear their ugly head too which i hope don't get overused. i only managed to get a few hours in on fri night and none yesterday but i'm jumping back on it later today so i'll find out then
Not a SoM fan, so I haven't played it, but that is extremely lazy.
I'm trying to finish Spiderman ASAP so I can trade it in for credit or another game, because its just shallow to me, and I have no-idea how it got this much praise for a QTE game. Hopefully I'll be done by next weekend.
As for the mini-games, oh you'll encounter more, much more.
i think i'm starting to see where you're coming from with the game.
i like it. i'm enjoying it. but it's just the same template as so many other games out there use.
open world - check.
side missions - check.
unlock towers to see new missions - check.
level up - check.
skill points to spend - check.
collectibles - check.
etc etc.
might just be me but i think i have open world fatigue. the prospect of having to go through the same rigmarole yet again is hard to get really excited for.
the combat is pretty good. it's not yet reached arkham or shadow of mordor levels of good but that might just be my lack of skill. it's lacking a bit of the weight and the precision of those games but hopefully once i've leveled up enough and spent enough skill points it should get there.
so far it's around an 8 from me. the next 5-6 hours will be key. it'll either rocket off to a 9 or plateau and stay around an 8
