The reviews have shifted my interest enough to the point where I now plan on playing it at some point. I'm not the biggest Spiderman fan, but I love open world games and the story sounds like it's supposed to be pretty good. So why not I guess.

@SoNin360: Speaking of the story being pretty good. Apparently Peter Parkers real life story is quite good.

Its an ok game for anyone on the fence, street date got broken here in Australia or at least a few copies got out.

Its not like GOW quality, but its just an ok title, its a bit like the first Infamous in terms of controls and fluidity, obviously graphics are subjective, but its nothing special like HzD or GOW.

how's it compare to the arkham games in terms of general quality?

AK - AA - AO - Spiderman - AC

That's the order in terms of worst on the left to best on the right. Arkham Knight is the worst only because I got it on PC and it was unplayable.

There's a LOT of side-quests in Spiderman but its the same crap; fight bad guys, go someplace else, fight more bad guys and help someone/retrieve something.

There's no variety and no puzzle type things like Batman.

Oh, it also released officially here today (Friday), so it only got leaked 14 hours before.

ok, well that's not too bad i guess, in terms of coming second when put amongst what are considered some of the best super hero games out there.

the lack of variety is a concern though, the side quests sounds worryingly similar to asssassin's creed's quantity over quality style. hopefully you're not forced to do them like in ac just to level up so you can do the next main story mission

I wont ruin it for you, or anyone else for that matter, but some are "side-quests" but they are mandatory to the story, you can play them at the end and have that "ah-ha" moment or at the start, and be like "wtf was that for?" and understand where it fits in as you progress.

@vespuche:

I'd probably wait till it's $30 or less. Still not convinced that it's worth the full $60. It sounds too much like the older Spiderman games.

@Macutchi: Oh I forgot to say, I hate QTE's and button mashing sequences, like Uncharted 1, 2, 3 does, I loved how they gave you the option in 4 to change it, I want ALL games to have that feature now.

Spiderman has a few...

I am not even too fond of spiderman - I am more of a batman fan tbh. But this game has exceeded my expectations in every aspect.

i didn't know you could do that in uc4 that's cool. and yeah i've noticed the game has it's fair share of qtes. i'm not a fan either (who is?).

coming up with an effective way to engage a player during heavily scripted moments is something game designers are struggling with. i get really annoyed with qtes sometimes because i find myself focusing more on when the next one will be rather than what's happening in the story. and the irony is game devs use qtes to really emphasise an important moment in the story but instead they often detract from it

My solution (well not mine really) is to slow down time (like the Max Payne games) during high action sequences so that the player can actually control the character and jump/shoot/etc.

Don't make it as slow as current QTE's, so its not too easy.

The devs could also borrow ideas from Superhot, where time only moves when you do.

yeah the max payne bullet time thing (f.e.a.r's slo-mo was good too) worked well and could be a legit alternative.

it often just smacks of lazy game dev to me. shadow of mordor's ending springs to mind which reduced the epic, climatic boss battle you'd been building to for most of the game to a handful of quick timer events. it's easier to pull some shit like that rather than put real thought and creativity in. dishonored 2 managed to deliver the story in a beautiful and cinematic way without the need for them. games like bioshock and half life 2 did too. it is possible.

there should be some kind of checklist all devs have to go through before using them - does the use of them here really add to the immersion and impact of this scene? are they contextual i.e. the pattern of input reflects the action on screen? do they feel natural? are you saying there are no other mechanics the game can leverage to deliver this moment? if the answer to all these is yes then it's acceptable. just. but otherwise they should be seen as a gaming anti-pattern.

the ones i've encountered so far in spiderman haven't felt necessary (the enemy-grabs-you-so-pummel-a-button-to-escape thing has been absolutely done to death in gaming). i also saw a worrying amount of mini games rear their ugly head too which i hope don't get overused. i only managed to get a few hours in on fri night and none yesterday but i'm jumping back on it later today so i'll find out then

Not a SoM fan, so I haven't played it, but that is extremely lazy.

I'm trying to finish Spiderman ASAP so I can trade it in for credit or another game, because its just shallow to me, and I have no-idea how it got this much praise for a QTE game. Hopefully I'll be done by next weekend.

As for the mini-games, oh you'll encounter more, much more.

i think i'm starting to see where you're coming from with the game.

i like it. i'm enjoying it. but it's just the same template as so many other games out there use.

open world - check.

side missions - check.

unlock towers to see new missions - check.

level up - check.

skill points to spend - check.

collectibles - check.

etc etc.

might just be me but i think i have open world fatigue. the prospect of having to go through the same rigmarole yet again is hard to get really excited for.

the combat is pretty good. it's not yet reached arkham or shadow of mordor levels of good but that might just be my lack of skill. it's lacking a bit of the weight and the precision of those games but hopefully once i've leveled up enough and spent enough skill points it should get there.

so far it's around an 8 from me. the next 5-6 hours will be key. it'll either rocket off to a 9 or plateau and stay around an 8

Exactly, I gave it a 7.5-8 myself, its a good game, but its almost like a chore most of the time, like RPG-esque.

I never liked the mechanics of Spidey himself, even from the e3 demo, it just looked "off", like he wasn't agile, and felt like a tank, like Batman does.

Great game
