For a quasi-traditional RPG, I'd say try something like Valkyrie Profile. Otherwise there's Final Fantasy (NOT Final Fantasy II) - a good choice, although a bit more difficult.
If you'd like to try something a little more insane, I'd recommend Disgaea: Afternoon of Darkness. It CAN be tough, but it's only really challenging when you're in the item world, which is mostly voluntary.
Just for the record, you're probably going to want to get a PS2 for RPGs. The PSP has a good selection (better than any other portable), but it pales in comparison with the PS2's library (Persona 3, Dragon Warrior VIII, etc.).
Oh, and if you want a really, really BAD RPG, you can always go with Dungeon Siege.
Why do you thing DS is a bad RPG? Sure its no FF but still its pretty cool.Oh, and if you want a really, really BAD RPG, you can always go with Dungeon Siege.

If you're new to RPG's, I would definitely NOT reccomend Valkrie Profile. It's a great RPG, but it's not for new players.
If you want traditional RPG's, I would reccomend Brave Story:? New Traveler. It's simple and fun, with fast levelling.
For SRPG's, I would start with Jeanne D'Arc. Once you grasp the mechanics, you could try Disgeae(which is far more complicated) and Fina Fantasy Tactics.
