The inquisitive folks over at Ripten decided to do a little research on the failure rate of current next-gen consoles. Their conclusions should come as no surprise, with the PS3 resulting in a low failure rate. What is surprising however, is the failure rate for one console in particular appears to be higher than previously anticipated. An EB Games associate singled out the Xbox 360 console by advising "failure rates for all other consoles were not high enough for EB to consider revising their policies" further claiming the failure rate of the Sony PlayStation 3 and Nintendo Wii to be "less than one percent." An EB Games manager reiterated the low failure rates of the Nintendo Wii by exclaiming that "zero [consoles] have come back defective." A Best Buy manager then went on record saying "a quarter to a third" Xbox 360 consoles sold, come back defective, confirming the 33% failure rate percentage. The methods used to determine failure rates for these consoles appear to be too elementary to really prove anything concrete. Nevertheless, this story allows us to breathe a little bit easier, as it continues to prove our console of choice can still fold like a champ and have a longer lifespan than that of its direct competition.

And?
I bet that we can find stores where both Wii and PS3 have higher failure rate than at those stores, if we really tried.

Go ahead and try. These reporters tried and they picked a big game retailer for their test.

they picked one store, the went to one ebgames and one bestbuy. if they really wanted to prove things they would widen there search alittle more, you cant really take things like this seriously, imo.

We will have to wait for any sort of press release from Sony to really get the figures (wishful thinking). But atleast these reporters tried a few stores, more then other reporters have done. People rather report bad news (360/PS2 failure rate) then good news (Wii/PS3 almost non existent failure rate).

Agreed

Totally.

And I find it strange that 360 owners in general are hardly upset about a 33% failure rate. It's an unacceptable failure rate, probably the highest for a console ever. I'm still amazed M$ hardly gets any crap for it.

On the other hand, if the PS3 had even a 10% failure rate, Sony'd be FLAMED all the way into hell. The stats would be plastered all over every games website, and the PS3 would be dead and buried.

I totally agree, its a shame, Im on my third 360, and on my first PS3.

I post a tread some days ago wondering why we behave like this, we started supporting MS, and almost 80% of the good games went on their console, putting our trust on MS's console, a faulty machine. Now we have a reliable console (PS3) and all the people is crucifing it.

But what can we do now that most of all the good games are on the 360?

But ultimatly, we have the fault... I know that if my 360 fails again I would buy another one (which is impossible cause I had to buy an extended warranty (WHICH I BELIEVE THOSE KIND OF THINGS ARE JUST BULL S**T "MS: if you want to be responsible for the console you are buying from me, you have to pay me more" just bull s**t))

maybe you should read up on the inquiries that were done. They didn't just call one store, one Best Buy, and one EB Games.

here is the link for you directly from the company that did it..
