I think that a story is important. But gameplay should be the formost. You really need a perfect blend Stanley-Steamer
Ditto. Though my priorities are pretty twisted. XD
-Story
-Music
-Gameplay
That's my order of gaming preference! XD Wrong, I know!
The last option was tempting...but I think that a good game NEEDS to have a great story or meh.rogerjak
I always leave a weird last option in my polls.

I don't have priorities....Everything needs to be great for me to love the game. Like Uncharted, everything is perfect. But for me story is almost as important as gameplay.Story makes a game just as much as gameplay does. I like the Prince of Persia series, I like the God of War series, I like the Resident Evil series and I think Uncharted is just toooooo awesome....because just like the ones before it, it has everything perfect. The exception maybe RE (voice acting) but everything else was fine.....
Ninja gaiden on the other hand only has combat going for it. No story....(yes I know it has one, its lame).....not a good one anyway. I got it originally for Xbox, didn't finish it because there was no reason for me.....I didn't get into the story that was there.....blah blah. I got it for PS3 and found forcing myself to finish it rather than wanting to finish it.

totally agree. specially on the part of Ninja gaiden.
Action/adventure, RPG's, and even to some extent, shooters are the genres of games that require a good story.
If a game lacks an interesting story, I find it less compelling to play. A good story will drive a game forward, it will make it memorable, and interesting. A couple of examples of games with good stories that really helped push the game to a different level are: Metal Gear Solid, God of War, and Final Fantasy VII, and Ratchet ahd Clank Future: Tools of Destruction. These games had characters that you could become attached to; they had villians that you could seriously hate. Once a game starts getting on your emotions like that, you know it has succeeded.
Call me old-school, but I'll take a single player campaign with a good story over online multiplayer any day. A good story with solid gameplay usually means a memorable game for me. I've played many games in my lifetime; the ones I remember the most are the games with unforgettable stories.
i think DMC3 was a poor example of how a story should be told, MGS3 though was brilliant, as was FFX, and SoTc for what little narrative it had.

For me, video games are the next step in the evolution of story-telling medium. First, stories were purely oral. Then people started writing them down, so they could be around for future generations. Next, people started filming them, allowing the story teller to tell the story with visual and auditory devices, while still being recorded for posterity. Finally, story tellers can tell a great story, with audio and visual stimulation, but also make it interactive, becuase after all, a story that you make your own, by playing through it, is better than one that someone else tells you.
That said, there are some games that don't need much story. Mostly things like sports games, puzzle games, etc.
Story and Gameplay is what defines a good game.
There are exceptions to story for example: figthing games, specific racing (nascar, formula 1, etc,) and sports games. For those Gameplay is # 1.
For everything else, Story, Gameplay, then everything else in that order..
Really had to resist Opition 5.
But I think story is more important but a good mix of good story and good Gameplay makes the best games.
What is Final Fantasy X without the story again? Pretty junk.:P
What is Final Fantasy XII without the story? ....The same thing.

DMC3 poor at story telling? umm i thought it was great and it is great, it follows the plot struture perfectly falling under the comic archtype. How the plot is developed is alot deeper then you think, just because MGS has more going on in the story doesn't mean it follows the plot struture better then dmc, they both follow it perfectly.
