The normal way the PS3 shuts off is when you hear the PS3 makes a beep sound and then the green light blinks for approximately 6-7 seconds before it shuts off. But there are times when I try to shut it off and it beeps and the green light starts blinking but the blinking last for a long time and it beeps one more time before it shuts off. Just like when a game freezes and you are force to shut it off but it takes a long time and it beeps another time. Do you know why the PS3 shuts off like that and is that bad that the PS3 shuts off like that?

If your PS3 is shutting off like that every time there is definitely a problem. Not exactly sure, but mine has frozen a couple times when trying to power off normally. When this has happened to me, my PS3 will beep once, the green light will flash longer than normal, then it will beep 3 times and then turn off. I would say the problem is very similar to an issue with Windows when a process is still running, yet you are forcing the machine to shut down, therefore you can get error messages and such before it will actually turn off. Maybe there is an issue with the OS (System software that the PS3 runs on). It could also be your hard drive. I would try copying all of your game save data, music, movies, and whatever data you want to an external hard-drive. Then I would format the hard-drive so that the OS will reinstall, then you can copy your data back.

This hardly happens. But when it does, I realize that sometimes I have a download running, i would shut it off, then the shutting off problem occurs. MAybe is like what you said, when a process is running it will have a strange way of shutting off.

Doesn't that mean it's still reading the hard drive or something... Mine sometimes beeped once, then the green light would flash for alittle longer, then it would beep a couple more times, then shut down. But that only happened with my 60gb model. My new 40gb hasn't done it yet...

The download is most likely the culprit. I've done this as well, but there have been other times where it will have the "delayed power off beepy thing" when I quit to a main menu of a game, then hold the PS button and just turn the system off. I don't think that is a good idea. Now I make it a habit to save my game, quit to the main menu of that game, press the PS button, choose quit game and go to the XMB, then I power off the console. Damn....to many steps right? What happened to the days of just pressing the on/off switch!?

I hear ya man, but it's best to pause the download and then resume it next time you turn it on. This is a feature that Sony definitely needs to implement with future firmware updates. The ability to have downloads still download even when the console is shut down. The 360 has this feature, Sony needs to follow suit.

LOL, I know. I always go to the XMB to shut it off, just to make sure nothing happens to my precious PS3. It is such a hassle, my brother gets so annoyed when I always tell him to quit game and go to XMB before shutting it off. He is the bigger one too. He probably like the olden days where you can just take the disc out and shut it off. He is so lazy that sometimes he wouldnt even take the disc out and shuts off the PS3

This indicates a forced/unexpected shutdown. There is nothing to worry about, it just takes longer for the PS3 to turn off because it needs to quit all the applications etc that were running at the time.

The proper way to shut off the PS3 is to quit out of the game usually, and then shut off the system. Although it doesn't really matter if you shut off at the menu of the game either, as long as the PS3 isn't doing anything labor intensive - unexpected shutdowns won't happen.

If the PS3 freezes, and you need to hold the power button on the front to shut off the PS3 - it will also beep twice. This is normal and is a force shutdown.

It's normal. It's not normal if you are on the XMB then use the controller to shut off the PS3 - and it still beeps a few times as it is shutting down.

I definitely love that feature on my 360, 100% agree that the PS3 needs that!

I recommend shutting down your PS3 always with the controller unless you absolutely have to manually shut it down(I.E screen freezes)

I never thought about it but now I realize that I always quit the game first then turn off the console, dont know why its been like that since the begining.
