Detectives are still interviewing a Johns Hopkins University student who fatally lacerated the upper body of a man breaking into his off-campus residence overnight. The suspect also suffered a nearly-severed hand, and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The house is home to four undergrads who had already had a Sony PlayStation and two laptops stolen earlier on Monday.

So when one of the students heard noises at about 1am, he went to downstairs to investigate armed with the sword. He saw that the side door to their garage had been pried open, and inside, the suspect lunged at him.

The guy probably didn't deserve to die, but Police have confirmed he has priors for breaking and entering.

Self defense or too much force? It's hard to say without being there. One things for sure: Don't **** with gamers. [Baltimore Sun] Thanks Joshua!

Ouch. He may not be in the wrong from most people's standpoint but he took it to the extreme and should serve some time for that.

Year, all jokes aside, that was "overkill," fair enough, a baseball bat is one thing, but a samurai sword?!?! Its obviously going to kill a man. Maybe he played TOO many PS3 games...

A person should have the right to defend himself, his family and his possessions within his own house with any means necessary. I say good job. One less criminal for the rest of us to worry about.

Let's say the other guy had a gun?? Would a sword be "overkill" then? Personally I think a sword is taking to much of a risk, I would feel safer with a shot gun myself.

Defend his/her self, yes.... but you can do that perfectly fine with a bat or blunt object. Killing the robber when the robber had no weapon was a bit too extreme. Now if he had a gun, different story. Someone shoots at you, by all means shoot back!

that might have been a bit much to some but how did he know the robber was armed also? because people these days are crazy and you never know what somebody has on their mind. he could have been planning to rob them and do them ted bundy styleand then even the bible says the wages of sin is death and one of the 10 commandments say thou shall not steal if you believe in that sort of thing

If there would be anyone who brakes in my house, I would get myself a weapon and I wouldn't care if the other is armored or not :/

I think everywhere life is considered precious. Even a criminal's life I view as more valuable than a piece of machinery. If I guy held me up and wanted money I wouldn't try anything funny. Money is nothing compared to my life. And if the guy was going to kill me I still wouldn't kill him because then thats blood on my hands.

As someone else stated when someone breaks into your house you don't think of "hmmm maybe this is too much." You take what's available to you and what is the most powerful weapon at your disposal because your life could be at risk. It's definately self defence especially since the robber lunged at him.

To much force? my a**. The SOB got just what he needed. my hats off to the wannabe ninja lol.Any one breaks into my home or car is going to be shot period.i work to hard to have what little i have got and im not about to let any one take any thing from me.not to mentune things that have been in my faminly for gen's. if any one does not like that then they should come and stand guard at my place to warn off the scumbags. And yea cops are great....after the crim has been comitted they are great at wrighting up reports that is. I used to live next to a crack head trailer park and kept haveing people tring to peak threw my windows ect. i had to be on guard 24/7 to keep my stuff safe. one night i looked out the window and seen my truck light was on. Some SOB was going threw my glove box. Well lets just say one bang and a lucky for him near miss later i didnt have any issues with people trespassing ....or wanting to borrow any thing again. lol. the punk should should stop stealing and join a track team because he sure did run fast, looked like one of those old road runner cartoons :p

I would label that as self-defense...but a freakin' sword? I could see a bat, or a kitchen knife...I mean, when someone breaks in, you want something to defend yourself with, but not kill the dude. But from another standpoint, I could see perhaps the kid was trying to scare him off, but freaked out. The best way for that is to have a court hearing. Although TBH, when you break into someone's house, you gotta expect the worst ;). Lesson learned...DON'T STEAL!DethSkematik
yes because killing some one with a blow to the head by a bat or being cut open with a knife is much better than being killed with a sword "rolls eyes"

To be honest man, I think the only people who should be legally allowed to possess functional and deadly sharp samurai swords.... are samurais. They are illegal to own in many countries already. But it is true, you definitely have a right to defend yourself, the burglar could have easily had any sort of weapon himself. Its a huge grey area really :?

yea. i mean who wants to defend them SELVES right. and it is so easy to tell weather some one who so kindly let him self in to your house in the dead of night has a knife or a handgun. the guy should have just went unarmed, then politely asked in intruder if he was armed while he made him self and the robber a nice cup of tea lol.

A person should have the right to defend himself, his family and his possessions within his own house with any means necessary. I say good job. One less criminal for the rest of us to worry about.EmperorSupreme

I second this. As the article states, they had already been robbed before. It was time to draw a line.

Why exactly would this be excessive? You have the right to protect your family by any means necessary. Period. I personally would have done the same thing. Who people claiming excessive, ever wonder why the gun toting "rednecks" rarely get robbed? Yea.. If they convict him all it does is promote the idea of a safe working environment for thieves, thus encouraging thievery.

I would have done the same thing if someone broke into my house.. they probably have a weapon and there is no way i would let anyone do anything to my family

Wild_Card
But they werent his family, and the burglar didnt have a weapon.....

yea. i mean who wants to defend them SELVES right. and it is so easy to tell weather some one who so kindly let him self in to your house in the dead of night has a knife or a handgun. the guy should have just went unarmed, then politely asked in intruder if he was armed while he made him self and the robber a nice cup of tea lol.

Haha yeah I get your point, but I just think its strange for a young man to bring a samurai sword to his on campus college accommodation.... I mean its a bit creepy tbh...
