  • PS3 with $399 price tag. How? By doing the following things:
  1. Stripping it down to the bare bones. No need for giant hard drive, include a 1GB one instead and have compatibility w/ external USBs and hard drives for more memory.
  2. Finding cheaper manufacturers for Blu Ray for the skeleton version. This may mean lower quality, but not as low as the Wii and near 360 quality. For premium graphics get the 20 or 60 gig ones.
  3. Delete MP3 playback and storage. Who honestly needs it? Most play their MP3s off their PCs/Macs or their iPods. Have a compatibility w/ MP3 players for playback in-game.
  4. Make the cases out of cheaper material. No gloss and semi-shiny plastic instead of expensive metal.
  5. Remove the slot loading drive and replace it w/ an option to put the disc directly on top, like the PS2 Slimline.
  6. Have fewer USB ports and card readers.

For other pointers to sell, it should:

  1.  Have more exclusive and better games, both 1st and 3rd party.
  2. Introduce the greatest hits section for abot $30-35 a game.
  3. Introduce some budget games for gamers tight on cash but want a new game.
  4. Have a better ad campaign. The laughing baby was creepy and made no sense.
  5. Appeal to a wider audience, like little kids, middle aged people and people in between. How? Follow the Wii strategy. Release Crash Bandicoot and Spyro games. Make a new kid friendly franchise. Make a new party game franchise (Xbox has Fuzion Frenzy and the Wii has...Mario Party (it sucks, but sells)).
  6. Cheaper controllers and accessories.

No. Just no. I love my HDD. I love my MP3s. I love my Demos. I USE ALL my USB ports. I enjoy the slot-loading disc drive. Also, you HAVE NO IDEA WHAT YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT WITH BLU-RAY.

Finally! someone who didn't say "Scrap Bluray"

but, you said for premium graphics, get the 20/60Gb. but a lower quality bluray drive wouldnt mean worse graphics, just lower read speeds. and with lower read speeds, it would benefit to write some of the game data to a hard drive, but having only a 1Gb HDD as you suggested... kinda doesnt work. cheaper materials could be a good point though.

It's nice to know you care, but your suggestions are garbage. All those features plus the games are what make it a great console. It  will be successful.  Things  just don't happen overnight. Give it  a couple years.

Agreed. I'd gladly pay more for quality and reliability.

agreed.  if Sony chose to go with the cheapest parts, it would be just like another console that constantly has problems.  So then we would go from, "God the PS3 is so expensive." to "God the PS3 keeps breaking down because it is so cheap."

always remember, you get what you pay for.

First off, a 1g HDD would probably be as expensive as a 20g, if not more expensive. No producers make 1g anymore, you will even have a very hard time getting anything below 20g these days, so if Sony would want to get them, they would need to pass a special command to a producer, and still they don't mass produce them, it would turn out more expensive.

Not only that, but it just wouldn't work. Most demos on the PSN are 1g, so you couldn't get any. The frameware eats a portion of that. Games like Oblivion eat 4 gigs of your HDD.

For developpers to take advantage of the PS3 specs, they must be regularized, and they must be regularized high. Or else devs will make their games with the lower specs in mind, to get a wider audience, thus making the 'better' versions useless.

That sounds like a cheap home made PS3 to me. No thanks to that, I am VERY happy with my "Current" PS3 thank you. The PS3 is perfect as it is. leave it be.

I think it's fine the way it is, if you do start messing w/ the hardware you'll start getting major problems with it, much like the 360's ring of death. It's not really that expensive, with the 360 you have to buy alot of accessories seperate (an example is HD/DVD Rom), which then adds onto the price of the 360; the PS3 just comes w/ it all rolled into one so you pay for it all at one time. It's amazing how many people don't realize that, if people don't have enough money for it then they should save up, that's what I did ever since they announced the price of the PS3 way back when, I just started setting some money aside here and there and in no time I was able to purchase it. :D

There's really no way possible to build a console any cheaper that would be as reliable as the on on the market today. That is the main selling point of the system. Not like other consoles that are failing in large numbers.

Terrible idea, PS3 is selling well, the last thing they need is to change the hardware and make a less reliable console, just imagine how many "My PS3 isn't working" threads we'll see everyday, PS3 is much superior to Xbox360 in the reliability department, so there's no need to change that.

Also, PS3 will have awesome games soon (MGS4, FF13, God of War 3..etc). More great games are out = more profit for Sony = eventually a price cut for the PS3 = We get a great console for less price, no need to degrade it. Â
