i was just thinking about what i learnt on business studies at school and i came to a conclusion

surely the ps3's massive price is just a marketing technique that many companies use

i mean if they have it massively overpriced (£425) they wait a while (4 or 5 months) and decrease the price by £100, this means that the ps3 will be £325 which is still £40 more then a xbox 360 but people will say 'oo look the ps3 is £100 cheaper, i might get one now'

im probably not the first person to come to this conclusion but im wondering what people think

I can see where you may believe it is a marketing technique....but I do not believe it is.

If a price cut came 4 or 5 months (heck even 10,11,12 months) later then I could imagine alot of very ticked off people that paid the intial price.

The EU Taxation law is one of the main reason why the price is higher in Europe.

If that were a real technique then Wii would have debute at 700 dollars, then 3-4 months later Nintendo drops it to 299. OMG everyone in the universe will buy one. LOL Ferraris should retail at 3million a pop, then drop down to 500 thousand, my god who can pass up a 2.5 million saving. otta get a Ferrari.

You guys also must realize that Sony didnt form as a company overnight.. They've spent years of R&D into this device.. they have teams who probably have their own sub teams that crunch numbers to figure out what price they can sell this thing at without completely going for broke..

As prices drop for production of the Ps3, that cost savings will most likely get extended to the consumer. Remember, they are banking on game sales to get their money back, rather than the PS3 as a device.. as blue diodes get cheaper and more available, and as they switch to the lower NM processes, it'll just get cheaper and cheaper to produce until it's only a few hundred bucks.. the day will come. It comes to all electronic devices...sadly though, that's usually at the end of their life cycle.. =(

Umm..... No. If true, Sony would have listed the price at say, 699, then "drop" it to 425 (or whatever) at launch.

The PS3's high price exists because it costs Sony a ton to produce.
