I have mine hooked up to a surge protector just because I feel better about it that way than hooked directly into the wall.... but I guess technically you should just plug it into the wall according to sony. I'm not going to change it, but if anything happens: "its plugged directly into the wall with no surge protector."

I have mine plugged directly into the wall, but i ordered a surge protector just to stay on the safe side. I think it's better to have a surge protector than to have nothing.

Luck was certainly on your side kiraburu. Oh and just out of curiosity, how long did you have your TV before it died?

I don't know if a surge protector does much for voltage fluctuations, but it never hurts to have one on any electronic device. There are UPS style home theatre backups that also help regulate the flow of electricty, which may be something to consider if you live in a house with particularly old or bad wiring. I mean, the kind of wiring that has an incandescent bulb changing in brightness by itself periodically.
