Depending on the size of your HDTV, there's little difference between 720p and 1080p. On smaller HDTVs (42" and below) only the extreme videophile might (and I mean, might) notice a difference. Since you own an PS3 and not an HDTV, you are not a videophile. Otherwise, you would've owned an HDTV for at least a year now.

IMO, the difference between 720p and 1080i is hardly noticeable...if at all.

I recommend 1080p, but if they're too expensive and/or you plan on going with a smaller HDTV, then 720p should be just fine.

As far as picture and res go, it really has mostly to do with the TV (read quality) and size of the screen. Anything under 42", 1080p should not be a concern if you ask me. You're going to pay quite a bit more to get it, and the difference from a reasonable viewing distance will be negligible. As for cables, if I were you I'd settle for nothing less than HDMI. Monoprice.com (and many other sites, that's just the one I know) has very reasonable prices for cables (under $10 as opposed to $50+ retail).

How much are you willing to spend and how large of a tv do you want?

If you want below 30-inch I would say go EDTV - larger go HDTV. Larger it is definately worth it -- all depends on the size tv etc so you can't go with generic answers as listed above

Why would you EVER advise someone to invest in EDTV?  EDTV is easily one of the worst major inventions in some time.

I completely disagree. I thought so up front too, but lets face it if you are buying a 26-inch you are not getting much extra by going HD. However, you can get a better quality (lag etc) product if you go EDTV and you won't see any difference in the picture between EDTV and HDTV when you are looking at that size tv's. Look at Panasonic plasma EDTV and they are better than a Westinghouse HDTV imho - if I tried to stay on a budget I would definately go EDTV instead. Some people in here are trying to get HDTV's for $4-600 and you will just end up with crap for that........

Now if you got a few grand to spend and want a larger tv - don't even look at the EDTV's..........

Save your money and go big, that way you will be able to enjoy your TV for years to come and not want to upgrade a year or two from now.  The main regret people have after buying a HDTV is that they wish that they had bought a bigger set.
