I'm planning on buying a PS3 soon. So which one should I buy? 80GB or 60GB or would it make more sense to buy a 40 GB version? I will be getting rid of my old PS2 so I plan to use my PS3 for all my favourite PS2 games. Are there any noticeable differences in terms of speed and graphics while running PS2 games on a PS3? One other thing: I have a 29'' C.R.T. Flat TV (LG). I used composite cables on my PS2 (even though my TV supports component output). Is it true that I can only run my games on progressive scan mode if I use component cables? I'm a bit confused so I'd really appreciate a bit of helpful advice :)

kinda hard to tell, in terms of hardware the 60gb is alittle bit better then the 80gb. In terms of prise, you get a whole lot more for your buck with the 80gb.

i said that the 60gb is alittle better then the 80gb, that is only with the backwards capability. The 60gb uses software (the emtions chep from the PS2) making it have 95%-99% capable to play ps2 and ps1 games. The 80bg comes with emulation so it only has 85% to 95% capability. Other then that they are exactly the same.

What i mean by the 80bg gives you more for your buck is that with it you get 20gbs more and a game for $500 while the 60gb comes by itself for around 479$ - 500$ depending where you go. I'd say get the 80gb as money is important and getting more is always a good thing, plus software updates unpdate the emulation so eventually it should play every ps2 game, most games that work perfectly are most mainstream games so you don't need to worry all the metal gears work:D

If you're getting rid of your PS2 but still want to play PS2 games on your PS3, stay far, far, far away from the 40GB. It does not play PS2 games. The 60GB PS3 is widely considered to be the best version of all, but it's been discontinued and they're nearly impossible to find now. The 80GB PS3 is going to be your best bet.

As far as how PS2 games run on the PS3, this is why the 60GB PS3 was the best. It had the PS2 hardware built into the system, so it ran PS2 games natively. The 80GB PS3 uses software emulation and will run about 80-85% of PS2 games. Sometimes, there are some glitches in the games as a result of the software emulation, but from what I've heard, it's rare. For all intents and purposes, the 80GB PS3 will suit you very well. That being said, if you somehow manage to stumble across a 60GB, buy it. Immediately.

Thanks for clarifying that for me Vendrena andJared. Now let's suppose I manage to find a nice 60GB PS3. Would it actually run games just as smoothly as a PS2? Would there be any noticeable graphical/ gameplay issues?

I'm surprised to hear 60 GB versions are still around. Still, the 60 (if you can find it)or 80 GB one would be the best bang for your buck.

I had the same dilema and after a couple of months of debating/looking/bidding on ebay/calling around, etc....I bought the 80gb. I checked my current ps2 library for B.C. on the site linked above....and I had nearly COMPLETE playability on them w/ the 80gb...so I went for the bigger HD. I don't see myself really buying any ps2 games anymore...so why would the BC be an issue, if my 80gb will play what I already own? Plus, very hard to find NEW 60's. A few places had some "returns" which scare the hell outta me, and they're STILL $499....which is the same as the 80gb/w/ motorstorm. Used 60's on ebay are bringing $390-$450 for just the system.....and they're in GOODNESS knows WHAT kind of shape?!?! Scary. I'm keeping my working ps2 for any random game that troubles me while playing it on the 80.

hardware, not software.

the 60GB is better, and you can change the hard disk easily up to 120Gb i think.

in my country, the 60GB costs 200 Dinars, thats $530, but it comes with a choice of MotorStorm or Resistance: Fall of Man.

Is it true that Sony will be releasing a smaller 'Slim PS2' without an external 'power brick' for less than a hundred dollars?

Anddoes the PS3 support DivX playback? If it doesn't, are there any firmware/ 3rd partyupdates available so that you can watch DivX movies on your PS3?
